What's so special about this performance is that there are no background vocals anywhere. Dionne is carrying the melody through the chorus all by her lonesome working her way through 2 or 3 registers with stunning ease and flexibility. Few girl singers, then or now, could do this with such effortless finesse.

Ms. Dionne Warwick knew what she was doing. Singing skillfully with various registers. Impeccable. No back up singers and every word is understandable.

Not only is she musically gifted, this woman also holds a Doctorates degree in music education, she knows what shes doing and she does it so well.

Gary Agnew how could Dionne record this first? Aretha wrote Daydreaming. She wrote this about Dennis Edwards, when they were dating in the late 60’s to the middle 70’s. He was the lead singer of the Temptations. But I don’t think nobody sings it like Aretha. It’s a love song, and she sings it with so much passion and soul.

Music was on point!!! Every woman who sings one of Aretha’s songs know they’ll never hit it like the Queen’s and not many will exceed their attempt but Dionne passed. As long as she maintained the jazz style she got approved.

Dionne Warwick in 1979 won a grammy for best female vocal Deja Vu and best pop female vocals as well. I don't recall the song right now. but she was the first female to win in both catergory at the same grammys. So that should tell you how good she is.

She's got some funny stories about working with Dionne, one involving John Wayne, that was very funny, and another she tells about Dionne's sister showing up late, in the middle of a show, but the best was calling out a piano player that couldn't find the opening notes to the song....Dionne walked up to the piano, clunked the mic on the keyboard and said, "Is this the note you are looking for..?" And Darlene is in, The Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame. ya!

that electric bass driven rhythm section is seriously groovin' under that shimmering vocal ... "deep listen" for that hot bass line ... a different approach to this tune with that brighter tempo, but the rhythm & blues is in full effect ... this is seriously yummy

Feels like the tempo is a little faster than Aretha's version. Dionne's phrasing was always her greatest strength as a vocalist. She really shows it here! That whistle thing at the end was a bit strange though! LOL!

Ms. Dionne excellently execute Ms. Aretha's songs. However, Ms. Dionne songs are masterpieces. No one including Ms. Aretha can't do them better, period.

Great, though it's hard to listen to any other recording of this song as Aretha did it so insanely awesome.

A D6 followed by an A5. They were head tones - traditional soprano placement - no whistle.

I used to sing a lot of songs when I was the premier vocalist in a band and we never had to get anyones permission to SING a song but if we were to RECORD it we would.

I think Dionne was pregnant at the time too!

I like the original Aretha version, it's much smoother. This one seems rushed and fast

Jennifer Hudson and Aretha have covered this song. It really comes down to a matter of preference, I can respect Jennifer and Dionne's interpretations but Aretha's would be my fav.
