Dio "Holy Diver" REACTION & ANALYSIS by Vocal Coach / Opera Singer

We're diving straight into another Ronnie James Dio masterpiece with an angelic performance from his aptly named band Dio. He wrote this song to show how selfish humanity is, taking place on another world, or another realm. I chose to watch the music video specifically for the visuals of the story taking place.
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to the band Dio for the very first time, performing "Holy Diver”.

The most powerful voice in metal. Never got the recognition he deserved. Years ago, I recognized him in a restaurant in Houston and tried hard not to bother him, but had to ask for an autograph. He graciously granted my request. I apologized for bothering him and started to walk away. He asked me if I was in a hurry and asked me if I would like to sit with him and talk. It took everything in me not to lose my mind! I managed to play it cool though. We proceeded to converse for 2 hours about life experiences and spirituality. He also told some hilarious stories about his grandmother. I learned he was in town because of his cancer diagnosis. All I did was listen as he went through his spectrum of emotions. Mainly anger at finally seeing success only to be derailed by his diagnosis. After a hug, we parted ways and I have never met a more beautiful spirit yet mighty force since. I cried for days after hearing of his passing. RIP RJD

Hermoso recuerdo. Saludos cordiales.

As fantastic of an artist as Dio truly is, I feel as though the thing that made him truly legendary was his personality. The man was short in stature yet larger than life on stage, a living legend, yet there are countless artists and fans that tell of how kind and welcoming he was. He loved what he did and loved those that allowed him to do it, I mean his live proformance of rainbow in the dark where he calls his fans all his rainbows in the dark made me tear up as you hear the compassion in his voice. Truly a one of a kind and truly disappointing that ignorance allowed so many to believe he was spreading any message other than positivity in the community.

In Bruce Dickinson's autobiography, he mentions that at one point he tried to put together what he called "The Three Tenors of Metal", which would have been himself, Dio and Rob Halford. Sadly Bruce's manager didn't trust Dio's manager (his wife, Wendy Dio) and had Dio replaced with Geoff Tate of Queensrÿche. Unfortunately the chemistry just wasn't there and the project fizzled out. But can you imagine Bruce, Ronnie and Rob collaborating on an album? It would have been amazing.

Dio was an alien. He was one of those exceptional individuals that will make an impact for generations after his short time with us. He had a nearly total recall memory, was the most gracious and humble person to his fan base, raised many millions for charities, and then a natural perfect voice instrument that he was an absolute master at controlling. He never warmed up, he just owned that voice, one of those once in a generation type individuals and talents.

Not just as a kid. Some years ago, I painted digital, 3-D looking, versions of the DIO logo, just for myself, for no apparent reason. It’s good. That was my first Dio album, but I really feel it’s overall weaker and duller in writing than the Holy Diver album and I feel he reuses ideas from it. It’s just not as exciting overall. However the song Mystery is way less repetitive melodically than the big single Last In Line which relies on the same 3 notes all the way through. Mystery even changes key in the 2 bars before the chorus. 💰 so much vocal and band melody. That’s just my suggestion for an episode... I may be in a minority? Another ferocious song is Another Lie from Sacred Heart. Dio sounds PISSED OFF and as a result it’s a killer vocal.

I fell in love with RJD when he was lead singer for Black Sabbath (Heaven and Hell being the song that did it for me). I was lucky enough to see him a couple of times in concert. His voice was just as clear and strong live. PLUS he was quite the showman. Whips that had a light changing feature. Mythical creatures around the stage. It was the total experience. BTW first time I saw him he was the opener for Aerosmith, the next time Whitesnake was his opening act.

Thank you for the brilliant thoughts on this video. In general, I love your facial expressions and compassion (and your voice of course 😉). I was allowed to interview Dio shortly before his death in Germany. He talked about his vocal training, or rather that he didn't really have any singing lessons. He learned his technique because of his trumpet lessons - that's where he learned the breathing technique for singing. He was so incredibly positive and inspiring despite his illness. I am so happy to have experienced him live at that time. I love many of his songs and have interpreted Holy Diver as a very quiet unplugged version (if you want, you can listen on my KZread channel … not as great as Dio's version, of course ... but straight from the heart). His voice is something very special ... so strong, and despite the roughness, very clear to the point. Keep up the great work 😊 Best Mabera

Musically, this has strong elements of Maiden and Zepplin. The galloping groove from Maiden (Genghis Khan (1981)/Number Of The Beast(1982)/Flight of Icarus (1983)) and some of the stabs and drum fills in the pre-chorus, reminiscent of Stairway To Heaven and also the guitar stabs and drum breaks during the guitar solo, that has an air of Zep to it. Pretty fascinating to hear! I also get the feeling that Rainbow's, "Gates Of Babylon", could have also influenced the overall Maiden sound as well, in terms of the overall vibe and singing style of Dickenson. Interesting to hear the different meshing and influences bouncing off each other back in the late 70s and early 80s, with bands potentially borrowing each other's sounds. Co-incidence? Possibly.

Linguistically, Hs are interesting since they are used so differently in many languages. Russian doesn’t use H, so they usually substitute K or G instead, Novaya Gollandaya for New Holland (a neighborhood in St. Petersburg). In English, we technically should use H more aspirated than what it is, more hinted at than pronounced, as “an” should be used instead of “a”. “An historical document” rather than “a historical document.” The hard Spanish J is really taken from the Arabic H rather than a Latin H. It’s also fun to here Brits and Aussies to pronounce the letter H since they say it more like “Huh-aytch” instead of the North American “aytch”
