I think the extinction was bound to happen as the climate and landscape started to shift. The asteroid strike could probably be just the finisher. But... I'm no expert. Just an opinion. Good thing they don't exist anymore though. Would be challenging to co-exist without some sort of barrier. Thanks for sharing National Geographic.

Azliana Lyana it sure would be tough to coexist with them today. i think they may have ate themselves out of homealso. as big as they were they would have required a lot of food every day. They would also devastate our crops and there would practically be no way to keep them out.

Extremelly unlikely. Dinosaurs have went through many massive ecological shifts, not even a freaking 10 Km asteroid could stop them as modern birds show. In all likelyhood many groups of Dinosaurs found in the Late Cretaceous may had become extinct, the likelyhood of all of them becoming extinct in anything sort of a cataclismic extinction event is very low. The K-T extinction just happened to be much more severe for large endothermic animals with long maturation times (like Plesiosaurs, Mosasaurs, Pterosaurus and all non-proper Avian Dinosaurs) than for ectothermic species with a long lifespan (crocodilians and turtles among others) and tiny sized very fast growing endotherms like the contemporary birds and mammals.

You don't need to feel overwhelmed. May I suggest start by taking your granddaughter to educational institutions; the Field Museum in Chicago, the American Museum of Natural History in New York, and the Smithsonian in Washington, DC are excellent places for any budding scientist to begin. You may also want to look up ways to take your granddaughter on an actual paleontology excursion. And, of course, there are always libraries and book stores. In general, try to connect her with as many experienced researchers as possible; this should give her a solid foundation for success. And, help her stay focused in her journey. Your desire to support your granddaughter in her educational endeavors is commendable. I hope you find my thoughts useful. All the best!

You know what I find odd? Dinosaurs were divided into two categories: bird-hipped, and lizard-hipped. Yet everyone says that birds evolved from the lizard-hipped dinosaurs. Shouldn't they have evolved from the bird-hipped ones?
