Honestly with how bizarre they got, their front-loaded build, and just how lanky they always were, Pterosaurs are probably the furthest a flying reptile can be from a Dragon, and, yes, that implies I think birds are closer. Even basal pterosaurs with teeth and tails are hardly draconic. And I'm saying that using one's name...

I love pterosaurs! I've always wonder if such amazing creatures could evolve again, or at least something similar. So, I started thinking, and I actually came to something. I have a hypothesis that one day, with the right selective pressures, bats could one day evolve to essentially replace birds and be the new, mammalian version of pterosaurs. Here's why: Birds used to be the underdog group when pterosaurs dominated the Mesozoic skies, but began to gradually replace pterosaurs, until the only ones left at the end of the cretaceous were large members of the Azhdarchidae family, like Quetzalcoatlus and Hatzegopteryx. These large scavengers then were wiped out in the K-T mass extinction. I feel like bats might do the same for birds one day. Why is this? Well, due to recent human activity, mammals worldwide are on the decline. The Center for Biological Diversity and the ICUN estimate that half of the Earth's known mammal species are going through a population decline. A fifth are currently at risk of extinction. In addition, 21 percent of reptiles will also be out the brink. 21 percent of fish share this fate. A third of all sharks and rays. A third or more of all amphibians as well. Birds, as it seems, will among the least affected. Only around 12 percent are threatened, and 2 percent facing a high risk of extinction. Birds will be severely affected by our mass extinction, but not nearly as much as other classes of vertebrates. The mass extinction, will leave open new niches that birds couldn't occupy because of current competition from other vertebrates. In the past, whenever birds didn't have competition or predators, they quickly fill the gap, and more often then not, lose the ability to fly, as it's no longer advantageous for survival. Such examples include the Moa, Kiwi, Kakapo, the terror birds, Elephant Bird, Bullockornis, and many others. So after the current mass extinction ends(from us getting our act together, leaving earth, or driving ourselves extinct), that means birds could very well fate the best and evolve to replace many current niches on land or in the oceans. When this happens, the skies, will be open for the taking. If bats as a whole group survive the mass extinction, there's a possible chance that, if birds do take advantage of the open niches and more and more become flightless, then bats might gradually, over many millions of years, come to replace them in the air. It's a very real possibility. I for one, would love to see pterosaur like bats dominating the skies, with their large leathery wings and fur, flying like the reptiles of old. Especially since bats have very similar wing structure and physiology to pterosaurs.

@@knightofarkronia8652 iirc the pointy, acute tips you see on Pterosaur membrane reconstructions a lot of the time would actually cause the wing to stall out at the tip, so it's reasoned the skin was sort of rounded out there. This might seem strange since it means part of the wing membrane is sort of floating unsupported, but remember how they said it has a bunch of reinforcing fibers and muscle- it's more rigid than just straight-up skin under tension, so that's ok. For the record, bat wings do kind of end in a point, but it's not a severely acute one since it goes from finger to finger on a shallower path than just straight to the hip, so I guess that's how they get around it. You can also see this in bird and even plane wings.

2:40, actually it's clearly & obviously impossible that the Giant Azhdarchoid Pterosaur "Dracula" didn't fly, no matter what the shape of it's shoulder might suggest. This animal's on-the-ground stance proves it wouldn't be able to RUN fast on the ground, and it evidently has no teeth, nor horns, nor armor plating, nor sheer mass to protect itself from the many predatory dinosaurs like T-Rex. So if this animal couldn't at least FLY AWAY to escape from predators, this animal should never have been able to exist in that highly competitive environment at all.

Oh, and another thing occurs to me...when birds evolve into flightless, their wings evolve to be smaller. The ostrich, emu, kiwi, cassowary, weka, auk, dodo, and even the penguin that still uses it's wings as flippers do not have such gigantic wings. None of these flightless birds have wings longer than the lengths of their bodies, and the wings of this fossil discovered in Romania has a wing far longer than it's body. It's got a 29 foot wingspan. I mean no disrespect to palaeontologist Mátyás Vremir, but he said: “I'm quite confident this giant was flightless. A good analogy would be the elephant-bird from Madagascar." So, I looked up that bird. (Aepyornis Maximus) It's a 9 foot bird with a rather short beak and a wing that can only be described as minuscule in relation to it's body. But, this "Dracula" pterosaur has not only a 29 foot wing but a 4 foot long mandible and rather long legs too. This, to me, suggests it's lifestyle was probably more like a stork's. And storks can certainly fly.

@@anonyarena Very well said. I always thought this, in the sense that, it wouldn't make sense for a large flightless animal to be roaming around terrestrially with a 36 foot wingspan. It had that wingspan BECAUSE it flew. The individuals who try to shoot this down do so because they aren't secure enough to stand back and truly marvel at these bygone wonders that the earth produced. Two things: the purpose for the extravagent purch-nest at the inner-portal transport station. The credit for the build- which services the taradactiles and other birds, the credit goes to Buddy- the other flying dinos- look to Buddy as a selfless soul for the build. And while Buddy awaits Conners return from Uranus- he can smirch around with other residents- a 5 minute fly here, a 5 minute fly there, means a lot to the residents when the flying dinos get a new spot.

I have literally spotted this bird in Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh, in India, while I was relaxing on my terrace, it went straight above my head with so great pace that I couldn't capture it and the building also obstructed my view later, I am pretty sure that bird was a pterosaur with long beaks and enormous wings in a pink shade, that was the most I could observe at that small moment of time, the place where I was living was near a dense forest and i believe that forest still holds dinosaur species which are regarded by scientists as extinct!

The largest flying dinosaur was the Boeingsevenfoursevensaur, which carried lots of tiny little dinosaurs on its back to other continents so they could visit relatives and friends, or just to have some relaxing time off. Before getting gobbled up by a T Rex!

Here is how to theoretically see a live dinosaur: 1) 100 million years ago, some Sunlight reflected off earth began travelling about 50 million light years towards a blackhole. 2) 50 million years later, some of it reached a black hole. Since Blackholes curve space time, some of the light that gets trapped falls in... some gets slightly curved and changes direction... while some light waves actually curve all the way around and get reflected straight back towards Earth (or rather its' position 50 million years ahead in time). 3) fast forward another 50 million years to today's date. If we can know exactly which black hole would have been in the right place at the right time, we could observe the light coming from it (including Earth's reflection) and technically see the dinosaurs. Now one needs to find a Telescope big enough to somehow "see" that far away in good enough resolution. It can technically be done by sending 500-1000 telescopes in orbit and combining data (individual light waves) from each, and stitching the image together... sort of the same technology that is being used to develop the James Webb Telescope, but on a much larger scale. food for thought.
