Ding Liren defeats Gukesh D's Italian Game
Featured is the sharp chess game between Gukesh D and Ding Liren from the 2024 Tata Steel Masters. The opening is an Italian Game, Giuoco Piano. It's instructive to see how exactly Ding Liren handles Gukesh's dark-squared bishop and its pin on Black's king knight. After Gukesh advances in the center with d4, Ding Liren responds with an excellent sequence that carves out a significant weakness on White's queenside, which a knight can then exploit.

Very natural, patient counter-attacking play from Ding, totally took over the middle-game. Thanks Jerry for the branches of analysis, very informative!
Ding is such a monster in these kinds of slow maneuvering games. To find a winning path is hard enough in a game like this, but to do it without even an inaccuracy is mind boggling. It may not be flashy, but it's precise.
If i ever needed a new ChessNetwork video, it's tonight. I'll probably follow it up with a 'this may put you to sleep' vid. moving tomorrow, wish me luck. need a good rest hehe
By far the best game analyses here in YT -- I feel like I understand chess! ;) Really, keep up the great work --- and don't change your unique style, it's a gem. Enjoying the strategic ideas from the opening, but above all the calm, dialogical way to explain the positions with no eval bar and just a little amount of SF only when needed. Refreshing!
I hope you don't stop your videos.. always had been the best channel.
Jerry has the best 👌 chess games explanations on KZread by far
Ding is goin Back-to-Back.. 2x World Champion 🏆♟️🏆
Top game, that makes the battle for thr world championship even more interesting. Also in many other aspects quite instructive. Well presented. Thanks for showing.

Great work Jerry as usual , the best chess channel in KZread for instructive game analysis , period !
I honestly want Ding to perform well in the match. It should be one to remember if he does...
The configurations in these games are funky and would be confusing but for your analyses. Thanx Jerry.
So cool how it’s not a very closed position at the time, but the knight is the much stronger piece. Really cool from Ding to figure that out OTB.
Great video, as always. I've been subscribed to you since I was in high school! Thanks for being such a prolific source of chess knowledge, and fabulous commentary.

Thank you, Jerry. God bless. Always instructive, always fun to watch.❤
No surprise considering ding has shown to find lines not even stock fish considers winning at times. He did find an impossible mate against nepo in the world championship.
Actually... this was the bestt chess video i ever watched! Thankssssss ❤❤
Wonder if this year’s Gukesh is better than 15 year old Gukesh? In the Candidates, he seemed to find better winning chances by playing more assertively than otherwise. Can’t wait to see what happens in the WCC.
Kramnik would find Ding's last 14 moves veri veri interesting
Jerry, at 2:00 how the White Queen Knight is going to trouble Black bishop ? Isn’t Bb6 an option for Black ?
Thanks Jerry mate
The best youtube chess channel ever😍😍
I'm a big fan of this clear valuable game analysis❤❤❤❤
Thank you
These two both prefer the same type of careful amnouvering, I just suspect that Ding is better at it than Gukesh, looking forward to a high level championship later in the year. Thanks Jerry.

He won both games they've ever played with the black pieces and earlier this year. Gukesh is clearly the underdog in this match.
Love the sharp play by Ding
Thank you Jerry
More Liren please more Liren
The position after Nxc7 and Kf8, Stockfish 16 at a depth of 24 evaluates at -2.5. Personally over the board, I would feel I was losing in this position. Open f file for a rook to occupy, pressure on the f7 point by LSB and the queen, potentially losing the rook on a8.

Its not that. Since Gukesh is still a very young player, there isn't many games where he has won against top players such as Ding, of course it will change with time. So Jerry analyzing their past encounters for WCC preview, we find more games where Ding won rather than the other way around.
@josephulmer5208
Ай бұрын
@@FahimHoq Although, I do I think there is a prevalent opinion among chess fans that Ding has lost a step since the WC and may even be an underdog vs the hot Gukesh. I think these last two vids by Jerry do a fantastic job of reminding people just how dangerous Ding still is. This game being from this year is especially impressive.
@stoutlager6325

The two have only played two classical games. Ding won both. Jerry has rightly covered both as they are relevant for speculation going in to the match.
@FahimHoq
Ай бұрын
@stoutlager6325 I agree. I love the fact that Jerry covered these games. I meant the sample size is small as its only 2 games, so we can't tell who is supposed to be the favorite in WCC later this year.
@FahimHoq
Ай бұрын
@josephulmer5208 I have also seen comments where people underestimated Gukesh as well. Ding is a fantastic player, no doubt, I think he will be back to his best, as defending world title is a massive motivation. However, we saw in the candidate that Gukesh has improved a lot in a short space of time. He looks much stronger compared to even last year. In the Candidates, he managed to hold his own against the likes of Fabi, Nepo, Hikaru, etc. Had those player were challenging Ding, no one would have doubted their strengths. So if Gukesh can win a tournament with them in there, then I believe Gukesh is also capable of challenging even peak form Ding Liren.
I watch many game reviews. THIS review is one of the very best that I have watched over many many years. And I am not a nice guy per say. Props be props.

Well, at least there are people who enjoy learning. Just do not like not knowing who or what I am playing against.
B5 hole was fatal combined with the queenside castle as well as the black sq bishop locked on the kingside
Did Liren really make the perfect move for 14 turns straight? Wow.
No inaccuracies... wow.
Look up Capablancas book chess strategy where he plays g5 and kills the bishop like here.

What's wrong with covering games from the players from the WC coming up? If it's the fact that Ding wins both games he covered, that is because there are no classical games with Gukesh winning, because the two haven't played that much.
