It's great to be back and thanks for joining! Due to multiple copyright takedowns I had to blur the video and do some minor audio work to keep it from getting pulled down again. Apologies, hope you enjoyed the reaction regardless! Please comment and let me know what you'd like to see from me for future videos.

@@CalebColesMusic If you need some suggestions for more Dimash, here are a few I would recommend: - Ave Maria from the New Wave 2021 (composed by Igor for Dimash, it's not schubert's) - SOS from his digital Show 2021 is really worth a listen - Stranger from the Super brothers show in china (much less "processed/polished" but the impro in the middle is quite impressive.. be careful though, the copyright is the worst on the that video) - Ikanaide from the Tokyo Jazz festival (it's autumn strong in Japanese and it's absolutely stunning) - Omir Otir for its lyrics, I think you might like the message as a Christian even though Dimash is Muslim of course 😉) - War and peace from his digital show 2021 - The Crown 2022 (the riffs are something else)

I think this song "Stranger" is epochal in four ways: 1) brilliant music; 2) brilliant meaning; 3) brilliant singing of Dimash; 4) brilliant arrangement. One blogger so deciphered the scenery on the screen. He said: «I like everything about the play. It has some kind of gloomy sound that matches the lighting and the setting on stage. He is justifiably present in the play, especially with the choir. Singers in the choir are dressed almost like druids in black robes. Behind them is this little spherical galaxy on the screen that is moving. And it seems to represent the endless journey of the World forward in a spiral. Wow!». Beautifully said. In this song, we have a full range - from top to bottom.». /// Everyone who loves Dimash's work is crazy about the last premieres of three songs, which are stated at the festival "New Wave" in Sochi (Russia) - «Stranger» (19.08.2021), «Fly away» (22.08.2021) and «Ave Maria» (25.08.2021). One reactionary said that Dimash always showed mind-breathing vocal skills, but with the song "Stranger" he went to a new level. /////////////// Kobyz is an ancient tool of the peoples who lived in the East, including nomads. It was used in ancient times by steppe shamans-healers for various rites. Kobyzy is made from a single piece of wood. This is one of the oldest ways of making musical instruments in the history of mankind. It is not due to technical backwardness or the lack of metal devices. According to the ancient beliefs of many peoples, only in a single piece will the living singing soul of the tree remain, which will sound in the instrument. The open body and strings of the kobyz from a bunch of 30-60 untwisted horse hair give a very thick, overtone-rich timbre.

Here in Stranger, Dimash used his artistry to show as many sides of his voice as possible. As your second "coming back home to Dimash" song, I suggest Ikanaide, where he uses his artistry to serve the song.

  • @paivyt.

As we know, Dimash chooses his approach and tools based on each song (or interpretation). I think he totally served the song in Stranger also. All those different tones, dynamics, every little detail - pauses too - were meant to tell the story, carry the message. Ikanaide is a different type of song. It's more static, more about emotions, about a certain state of mind. So Dimash focuses on to show those emotions: melancholy, sadness, longing, anxiety... He does it in a very detailed way, indeed masterfully! Stranger is more powerful and dynamic as a song. It tells an epic, even mythological story, so the tools he uses are also more epic and extreme. My thoughts... :)

You really should react to the Trilogy of songs from the New Wave 2021 - Stranger, Ave Maria - which was a request from Dimash for Igor Krutoy to compose for him. And third is Fly Away...3 songs, each a different genre... And since you been gone for a while, you really need to react to Be With Me the official MV - he acts...does martial arts...raps in Kazakh...go for swim ...gets the heroine...its a great song and the production is a hoot!! Welcome back!!!

It's a good day when Caleb shares his thoughts about a Dimash song. The only nuances I can share are narrative. I have learned my lesson - I won't try to pontificate on vocal techniques, I'm out of my depth. In the opening sequence, Dimash sings quietly, hesitantly; he's stepping forward into a new space, not sure of his reception, not sure where he'll end up, he looks about warily, taking it all in. He reflects on the life he has left behind, loves lost, memories. Then he asserts himself with more confidence. He's going to make this work, darn it. Then he treats us to a nonverbal passage where he asserts his identity - this is who I am, what I can do. He returns to a more contemplative lower passage; he is readying himself for maximum effort. And then the final passage, where he displays his confidence in his new situation. This is his maximum effort. With skills like his, his confidence is warranted! This song is an anthem for immigrants and refugees, voluntary or otherwise, who are moving from one culture to another - and a reminder to those who are receiving those immigrants and refugees that they bring value to their new communities. At least, that's what I took from the song. I like the message and the way Dimash delivered it. And it's a beautiful piece of music, too, well staged and exciting. The Dimash-Krutoy collaboration continues to surprise and delight me. You might enjoy reacting to the Dimash-Krutoy composition 'Ave Maria.' This is the only true countertenor song Dimash has delivered, so far as I know. It's entirely in his upper range - and therefore accessible to sopranos, should they wish to cover it. I'd love to hear your analysis of his technique for this song, and your opinion of how well sopranos and countertenors might fare if they attempt it. Cheers!

Hey, it's good to hear from you again, hope you've been well. I love your break down of the story telling of Dimash throughout the song. Dimash is really great at matching his vocal choices with the flow of the story of a song. Great insights as to the lyrics - I was kinda catching a similar thing but your thoughts are much better worked through, makes it much clearer to me. I'll check out Ave Maria soon :)

I love Stranger. Epic and very cinematographic song, sung by the brilliant Dimash. As for the meaning of the song - as always, everyone perceives it through the prism of their own experiences. Although the song was written much earlier, since 3 million war refugees came to us - listening to Stranger, now I always see women and children crossing the border, tired, scared and unsure of their fate, with one suitcase and luggage of memories from home, entering an unknown, foreign world - "a stranger in a stranger land " - and looking for strength to start life anew 💔 Hugs from Poland

Welcome back. This was another enjoyable reaction and analysis. "Stranger" is the first of three songs Dimash premiered in August 2021, during his performance at the annual New Wave music competition in Sochi, Russia. He again performed with Igor Krotoy on the piano and introduced Olzhas Qurmanbeck on the kobyz. Igor Krutoy composed the music, American poetess Sharon Vaughn wrote the lyrics, and Dimitris Kontopoulos (Greece) and Yerlan Bekchurin (Kazakhstan) did the arrangement. Igor Krutoy is quoted as saying, "it was Dimash's talent that inspired me to write this song, his immense vocal abilities and his desire to sing for a large international audience. Franky, I don't see anyone else who could perform this piece in such a way." In my humble opinion, this is an amazing performance, one of the best to date. Dimash traverses almost 5 octaves (C2-F6) in this performance. That stunning last note is about 19.7 seconds in full mixed voice belt in F#5. Dimash performs an alternate version of "Stranger" on the "Shine! Super Brothers S2" Youku Show that is simply mind-boggling and well-worth checking out. Here is the link: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ppyWycppoazZk6w.html When Dimash first listened to the melody of "Stranger," he felt that the addition of a kobyz to the musical arrangement would give the song a unique yet very fitting sound. Thus, the kobyz debuted at the New Wave Hall at the Sochi Olympic Park, and what a great choice indeed. It is a beautiful sounding instrument that underscores the song's deep meaning. This wasn't the first time that Dimash has featured Olzhas Qurmanbeck playing the kobyz. You can also enjoy him in a few of Dimash's other performances, such as Qairan Elim (official music video) and Samaltau (2020 Tokyo Jazz Festival). The kobyz, played here by Olzhas Qurmanbeck, is a 5,000-year-old, traditional, sacred instrument in Kazakhstan. The kobyz or Kyl kobyz is the most ancient bowed instrument on earth, widespread among the Turks, Kazakhs, Karakalpaks, Bashkirs, and Tatars. It became the basis for most of today's bowed instruments worldwide, including European instruments such as violin, viola, cello, and contrabass. The Kyrgyz variant is called Kyl kayak. The instrument is carved from a single piece of wood (typically apricot), juniper (arsha), maple, pine tree, or birch. The instrument consists of three parts: head (base), middle (base is keude), and lower part (ayak) and usually measures 60-70 cm. The resonant cavity is usually covered with goatskin, reproducing a sound representing the animals of the steppe. It has two strings made from horsetail hair, one to provide melody and the other resonance. Someone explained that one string is made with 75 horse hairs and the other with 60 horsehairs. The strings are not pushed down to a fret but are played with pressure applied by either the fingernail or the pad on the finger, and the tones are varied by the pressure of the bow. The bow is shaped like an archer's bow, and its string, made with 40 horse hairs, is tied to both ends of the bent branch and affixed with strong threads of camel wool. The New Wave Music competition started in 2002 and for nearly two decades now, has been one of the most iconic music events in Russia and other parts of the world. It is an international contest for young performers of popular music. It was founded by Russian composer, performer, and music producer Igor Krutoy (seen here playing the piano) and Latvian pianist and composer Raimonds Pauls. Russian superstar Alla Pugacheva eventually joined as one of the show's organizers. The contest usually lasts for six days: 3 contest days, 2 special event days, and the final day when the contest's results are announced and a final concert is performed. The television audience of the New Wave music competition numbers more than 200 million people. In 2018, Dimash debuted as a guest performer, performing his now legendary rendition of "Sinful Passion." This year (2021), Dimash took part as a guest performer and a judge. 11 participants from 9 countries competed for the grand prize in the finale.

As The always delightful Fairy Voice Mother put it in her review of Stranger, written by Igor for Dimash. When you get to his level you have to have people writing songs for you that are specific to your voice and your abilities because there are few compositions out there that actually cover the number of octaves he is capable of or, that encompass his myriad abilities. That's not a direct quote but didn't stray from what she said. After all, she said, "He's going where no man has gone before." Good review Caleb. Keep them coming. I like the way you obscured the video incidentally. Rather than put type over them as many do; yours allows one to see all the movement which is more important, actually, when one has already seen the video in focus (countless I admit I am addicted to this 88th wonder if the world we love named Dimash!) anyway - we fill in the blanks with our imaginations the details.

It was Dimash’s idea to incorporate the beautiful and haunting sound of the Qobyz: what a brilliant addition to the composition! It gives much more depth to the meaning of the song I think. Also, listening to Stranger is in and of itself a musical journey where we’re accompanying Dimash through this “stranger’s land” with each and every vocal technique and singing style which denotes a different culture and path in life. Welcome back. Good to see you again. You've been missed. Looking forward to more Dimash reactions. “Stranger” was composed by Russian songwriter Igor Krutoy (who’s also the pianist), and the lyrics were written by American poetess Sharon Vaughn. The main arrangement was by Dimitris Kontopoulos (Greece) and Yerlan Bekchurin (Kazakhstan). Dimash used an Arabic maqam for his ad lib in the middle of the song. It's a system of oriental scales, melodic phrases and ornamentation techniques. And it fit perfectly with the mood of the song. Igor Krutoy said, “It was Dimash’s talent that inspired me to write this song, his immense vocal abilities and his desire to sing for a large international audience. Franky, I don’t see anyone else who could perform this piece in such a way.” The solo instrument heard at the beginning is called a kobyz which is an ancient Kazakh instrument. The idea to add the kobyz to this song came to Dimash after he first heard the tune of “Stranger”. The singer realised that the folk instrument would fit perfectly into the song, giving it an exquisite sound. Dimash has always been anxious to popularise traditional Kazakh music. So, he really wanted the kobyz to be played on a big stage like Sochi’s New Wave Hall Dimash said, “We invited our talented friend Olzhas Qurmanbek to perform the kobyz in “Stranger”, because he is considered the best kobyz player, who managed to fully convey the emotions and character of the song. Thanks to him the song got its outstanding and unique sound. I’ve always dreamed of the kobyz to be heard in my foreign collaborations.”

That would be very nice of you, it took Dimash 3 years to make this production, paid for by himself. It is a call for peace, a vocal piece and usually MAGNIFICENT. The best thing I've seen in my life. kisses and do not abandon us to the DEARS who still follow you and support your projects.

Nice to see you back. You might like Ave Maria, we have been enjoying that too. Personal fav is Ikanaide as well. Actually we don't know a back story, for Stranger. Its written by Igor, but only Dimash could sing it. Its from a number of new songs. They really enjoy working together. We hope they can release other songs already completed.

Welcome back Caleb! From the haunting voice of the kobyz in the intro, to the whisper tone when Dimash comes in, Stranger hooked me right away. Dimash provides musicality, theatricality and technical mastery in one package. A joy to watch. If you’re interested, you may enjoy the Ave Maria that Igor Krutoy and Dimash created together. Cheers from Canada.

It's Caleb! I thought you might have left youtube for good. BTW, you look great! Healthy and well-rested. If you get a chance, I'd love to see your analysis of Dimash's performance of "Ikanaide". For me, it's the best vocal work he's done so far, and without any insane acrobatics it's a technical masterclass.
