    After 10 years JEM, I swapped to DiMarzio MoJo and PAF Joe, just wanted somthing slightly more traditional. Works a charme. Evo's are boombastic and can do everything, but again, they have this Full-on feel all the time. I guess the AirNorton/ToneZone Combo is awesome in any RG prestige / JEM. Just my 3cents

    All sound great including the stock Dimarzio/IBZ set. My first choice is the Evo/JEM set. You can't deny that extra classy aggression and unmistakable scream! Second choice is the TZ/Air Norton set. The TZ has a warm full bottom end to it which works well for E and Eb tunings. For lower tunings I think the bottom would "bottom out" and I'd prefer something tighter. Evo does well in low tunings too. Air Norton is quite good in the neck with distortion. It sounds liquid. Petrucci based most of his signature neck pickups of this pickup. Evo neck offers more cut and highs which I prefer :) You played well man and you have great guitars!

    A really cool comparison video would be comparing the PAF Pro, the FRED, the Evolution, the Tone Zone, the Norton, and the Mo Joe. The FRED and Evolution both came from modifications to the PAF Pro, as Satriani and Vai both used PAF Pros first. The others all came from the PAF Pro being the modern humbucker starting point. The PAF Pro back to back with the FRED would show us how Dimarzio tweaked the mids, for example. Also, hearing a FRED, Evolution, AND Norton compared to each other would be great.

  • @rowlandstraylight
    @rowlandstraylight6 жыл бұрын

    The IBZ set are made by Dimarzio and are voiced similar to the super distortion (bridge) and paf Pro (neck). They are built like the early production (plastic case) super 2, the poles are set screws so shaped more like a threaded slug than the cap head screws of the Evolution. I think they're really well voiced pickups and the balance between them is pretty good. The neck is quite bright and neck leads cut through a mix really well. Not as "in your face" as the evo set. I didn't get on with the Tone Zone in a recent mahogany Iron Label S (SIR70FD), finding it very muddy so I replaced the Tone Zone and Air Norton with an IBZ set id found for a different project and really like the sound. I have the evo set in my S540, they're surprisingly stratty in the neck parallel and inner coils switch positions that emulate positions 2 and 4 of a single coil strat. Very tight and leads really sing, but I find myself using the IBZ equipped S most of the time. I'm actually using the Air Norton as the bridge in a bright HSS guitar and it works really well. The Tone Zone is sat waiting for a bright guitar.

    Hi Martina! I do have an RG1 xxv as well (and a prestige 2550 too), both with stock Ibz pu's. I am wondering if it is worth swapping them for evo's. Can you advise please? Thanks!

  • @martinafan64

    @martinafan64

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@z1xy273 That's awesome, I've always loved how the sharktooth inlays on the 2550 are outlines instead of solid. IMO, the Evos are definitely better than the stock DiMarzio/IBZs, especially if you play on high gain settings. I suggest swapping them out for Evos in one of your guitars first to see how you like them. Then you can decide if you want the same set of Evos in the other guitar. But maybe for a slightly different sound, instead of the original Evo bridge in the 2nd guitar, install an Evo 2 bridge instead. www.dimarzio.com/pickups/high-power/evo-2-bridge If you don't like the middle single-coil pus and don't play them much, I suggest installing the single-coil "S" version of a humbucker like the Tone Zone-S, Super Distortion-S, or any of the other "rails" style single-coil pus. www.dimarzio.com/pickups/strat/hum-canceling-strat?sort=output&order=1 Then it's like having 2 bridge pus in the same gtr. Well 3 actually, since when the pu selector switch is in position 2, it'll split the bridge & mini-humbucker middle pus for a "hybrid" bridge tone that you might like better than the bridge & middle pus by themselves. In my case that's what I experienced with a Super Distortion in the bridge and mini-humbucker Tone Zone-S in the middle of one of my Ibanez gtrs.

    I'd say each pickup has its moments. I do have a DiM/IBZ in my RG and I find the set awesome. Fantastic all the way from clean to heavy crunch and even some lighter metal. Most of all, they clean up nicely if you're using Bourns audio taper pots or their more commercial and expensive siblings, the Seymour Duncan Bourns-made pots. No need for treble bleed, the taper is amazing and you can really go from metal to fragile clean tones in a snap. Air Norton/TZ do sound unbelievably good most of the time, although I don't really dislike the chime-y EVOs at all. All good pickups IMHO, depends on what guitar they're in and which genres you favor. Ultimately, the player's hand does much more work than any pickup set :P

  • @andreil1234

    Dunno, is "just a custom version of" a bad thing? Anyway, they are quite different. If you place the bridge IBZ in the neck and vice versa you'll hear the difference, so they're based on different pups realy, but do come a bit closer than other sets - they balance quite well I'd say. In a basswood+maple neck/fretboard RG, I'd say they sound awesome but may be too bright for some tastes (nothing you can't fix via eq/amp/preamp though); in mahogany or something that's more dense and a bit darker sounding, I think they'd be even better.

My first experience with TZ/AN pups, but not with Ibanez. I had an RGA420 BK once with the lowest, buzz free action I've encountered off the shelf...and it hung, unsold, on the wall for 3 years before I purchased it. Only guitar I owned at the time that didn't require constant truss adjustments. Hated the muddy stock pups, though.

    LOL The Dimarzio IBZ was made by Dimarzio and is based on the Tone Zone. It is very much the same pickup.

    I never got why people hated on hte IBZ pickups or the V7-V8s. Brand name pickups dont come with a new set of fingers and hears...

    Don't like the ToneZone. Good clarity on the Evolution, but more classic tone on the DiMarzio/Ibz (less Output?).

    Yep, I believe the DiMarzio/Ibz are more Paf Pro like pickups.

    For the bridge, Tone Zone sounds much more smooth and beautiful. For the neck, Evolution has more body and is fatter sounding.

    Evolution more agressive, distorted bassy, but for me too disturbing...i preffer tone zone with air norton or even air zone which is even more warm in combination with air norton

    For versatility. In general for me: - Bridge: 1st Evo (more balanced) 2nd ibz (more bright) 3rd Tone zone (more gain, but best for metal) - Neck: 1st Tone Zone 2nd Evo 3rd Ibz
