Here's a demo of the DiMarzio Air Zone (uncovered) in the bridge position and the Air Norton (covered) in the neck position of my strat. This guitar has an ash body & a 1-piece maple neck. The pickups are wired to individual volumes, and a master tone - all 500k pots. The guitar then goes through my Ibanez TBX65R amp mic'd with a Shure SM57. I play through several different settings - clean, rhythm distortion, and lead distortion.
Clean sounds:
Neck: 0:04
Neck & Bridge 0:50
Bridge: 1:34
Rhythm distortion sounds:
Bridge: 2:30
Bridge & Neck: 3:30
Neck: 4:20
Lead distortion sounds:
Bridge: 5:18
Bridge & Neck: 6:13
Neck: 7:00

I put this combo in a Washburn BT-8 that I found at a guitar store. The original p'up were crap, but the guitar played well acoustically. I had a friend changed them out, and it has been a favorite of mine and my player friends ever since. The Norton has a clean, jazzy vibe. And the Zone works great withour making the rig out-of-balance. I'm glad to see someone else chose this combo too.

Thanks for the great demo. I'm thinking of the same set for my peavey evh special. It is basswood body (i think) with a maple neck. Wonder if these will sound a little less bright in mine.

Most annoying thing in the world when you click on a supposed demo and some dude starts chattering away telling you what it sounds like. PLAY THE DAMN THING, then I'll know what it sounds like! Nice work man. You know you can take the nickel cover off? Might look better, dunno about any tone difference though.

I agree completely! I try to keep my demos all about just playing so people can decide for themselves. I know, I left it on because I like how it changes the tone. Covers tend to add more bass response and roll off the top end response, so I like that for the neck pickup.

Let me tell you how great this amp sounds. It sounds BIG, it sounds DYNAMIC, it sounds WARM and also CLASSIC, but it's also very MODERN and voiced with twenty five levels of GAIN, from Cinnamon Crunch to Cinnamon Toast Crunch. In the middle Count Rockula setting it's like a Soldano modded Dumble...

Great playing and sound man! I actually stumbled across the Air Zone after hearing Alex Hutching's signature guitar. It's got lots of mids but not too bright. And it never gets muddy no matter how much gain you pile on. I threw one in my SG along with a Seymour Duncan Jazz which sounds similar to the Air Norton

The Air Zone and the Norton are my favorite two DiMarzio bridge p'ups I've used! Air Zone is great like you said, all around. It doesn't get brittle, and it's very versatile. The Norton was a little more in-your-face - but people would always compliment my tone when I had that pickup in my strat's bridge pos. Sounds like you have a great set up as well!

The Norton is a great pickup as well. As you said it is definitely more in your face because of the higher output and more high end. Ended up with the air zone because it was more backed off and an airbucker. Just feel its a tad more versitile. Both sound great though!

Nice demo. I specially appresh the Air Norton in the neck. It's where I was thinking of placing one. What effects did you use for the drive sounds? Or was it from the amp? If your 'buckers are wired for their own volumes, is the last tone knob for tone for the both of the pickups or are they going totally without the "tone knob". Thanks again.

+dstrats Yep, no effects used here - it's just all coming from my amp. The tone knob is a master tone meaning it affects both pickups.

I recommend coil tapping the humbuckers.. I'm gonna coil tap my Air Norton & The Tone Zone with 500k pots.

Hey Alex. Cool vid. I put an Air Zone in the bridge position of my '02 Am Dlx Strat. Still getting used to it. It's got a lot of bite. I might have it raised up too high...to close to the strings maybe. Gonna try lowering the pickup so it's further away from the strings to get a smoother and mellower sound. How close do you have the Air Zone to the strings?

  • @AlexStarbard

Hmm, I keep my bridge pickups pretty close to my strings typically, because I love the attack and bite. I found that the Air Zone is a much warmer pickup, and works great in the bridge position because it balances well. I definitely don't personally find it too bright. I would say after adjusting the height - check your pot values, tone cap values, and amp settings. It could even be your amp. Check if the pickup is wired correctly (i.e. in series not in parallel). Lowering a pickup also does reduce high end response... good luck!

too much bite? try the Tone Zone then... it is a magical pickup. the split coil mode on it (neck facing single coil) is the best that I've experienced in a humbucker - by far.. although Tom Anderson's H3 line does very well too. bright guitar = Tone Zone heaven. Is the guitar in the vid here a basswood, ash, or alder bodied instrument?

***** Thanks. I lowered the Air Zone a little bit and it seems to have helped. Strange thing about my Strat ('02 Am Strat Deluxe) is that it's a very heavy Strat...must be alder. My other two Strats are ash and they're much lighter. So you'd think my alder Strat would have a darker tone with less treble. But the original Fender noiseless HB pup that was in the bridge position was too brite and sounded kind of lifeless to me. So I had my tech replace it with the Air Zone. Lots of life now, but still a tad too bright for my taste. However, I don't know how or why...but the tone pot does not work on the bridge pup? No idea why...but I'll see if I can get that fixed so I can roll of some treble bite. I had him install the Air Zone in the bridge and 2 Dimarzio Cruisers in the middle and neck. Love the Cruisers by the way.

Stratodan 27 If it is an HSS setup with a 5-way switch, then the two tones will be wired to the single coils. Wiring the bridge pickup to one of the tones is simple in that kind of a set up. My personal set up with this guitar is the 2 humbuckers, 2 volumes, a master tone and the gibson style 3-way

***** This guitar has an ash body. I don't have any experience personally with the Tone Zone, but always hear that it is a great pickup. I've used the Tone Zone T and I didn't like it personally, it was a little too lacking in power for my taste. I ended up using the Super Dist. T in that guitar instead
