RIP MICHAEL HASTINGS
No safety in new cars!
Great and important video. I suppose it's not down to Forbes to draw a connection to Michael Hastings, but for anyone interested, there are videos on our channel explaining the suspicious circumstances of his death.

Michael Hastings is the first person I thought of when I saw this video. Now Joe Biggs his buddy is in the dungeons from the pre-planned J6 event.
I suddenly have the urge to drive a 1974 Lada...
rest in peace paul walker
So, they need access to the dashboard to hack the car. Seems you´re gonna notice if somebody ripped out the dashboard.
This is how Micheal Hastings was murdered.
I think im gonna become Amish... try doing that to my horse drawn carriage
Now I can return the rental car with an empty gas tank and not have to pay anything.
can anybody say "Michael Hastings"?
That escalated quickly... to a very dark place...
Mr Hastings . Was the first thing I thought of when viewing this video.Thank you for the upload.
right on
Isn't this how they killed Michael Hastings

First thing I thought about.
This is actually a really scary reality.
Thanks, bro.
I was just waiting for them to set off the airbag as the ultimate surprise.
Wow, great post, post more!
This is insane
exactly.
That's exactly what I thought of when I saw this video. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised.
Wow!!!!!!
This is some crazy shit here
Well that was all sorts of dangerous.
oh no... that would make it worse
Good job
If they share it at all, given the absence of that tidbit.
This video is scary because though the hackers are being playful about it, the idea that this can happen to someone going down the freeway is a nightmare waiting to happen. These guys were playful about it and told him what was going to happen, what was happening, and what happened.
do they have a hard line access of is it wireless ?
Plug some sort of transmitter/receiver into the OBDII port?
Actually they ca do the same thing from the ALDL connector under the dash.
Remember you can ALWAYS turn the key off...it is mechanical, and so is the emergency brake.
Yeah and I don't think a cause was ever ascertained for those accidents.
That was pretty dangerous !!! :o
Go ahead.
Waking up in the morning is also potentially dangerous. Being ready can make a huge difference.
Ultimate trolling!!!!
Yes they do the 2010 and up have parking assist as an option.
I ask myself this every time I see somebody building a fire.
Very Very cool and at the same time very very interesting.
It's not purely about functioning at all, but improved functions.
Some of the safety systems, especially the brakes should have a backup redundant mechanical braking system.
Michael Hastings brought me here. And also, I've been bitching for a long time against stuffing so much electronics into our cars, needlessly. Can't remember when was the last time that i absolutely needed a remote control to unlock my door because i wanted to get in without actually being nearby, so that i could unlock with the same finger that pushes the remote. Love shifting manually. They still did not take that away from me.
As well as Hastings, what about all those weird Toyota "unintended acceleration" accidents in 2010/2011. I never heard of them happening anywhere else but in the US.
I wonder if this is possible without having access to the cars on board computer systems.
Yeah, true story
just need little modification on Layer 1 with wireless , to control remotely! :)
Bought a Prius recently and then saw this video. Cripes
wasn't the reporter driving in hancok park in los angeles?
I'd also check for devices connected to your car's OBD2 port. And make sure no one updates the ECU firmware while you are not there.
i'm sure they could attach a wireless router to the ecu or possibly rewire the xmradio or sirius satellite radio antennae to boost the signal.
they still need a wired connection to the ecu, so they would have to find a way to disassemble his car without anybody noticing.
Almost all modern cars have multiple ECUs.
Well my idea to buy a prius next after my 91 golf dies has gone RIGHT out the window
It is a sad day in history to have to repeat a ancient quote: "NOTHING WHICH THEY PROPOSE TO DO WILL NOW BE IMPOSSIBLE FOR THEM..."
Some manufacturers have the capability to remotely send commands down to the vehicle (ONSTAR) though this would only be a fraction of vehicles currently.
Link?
Love my '83 bronco even more now.
Serious trollage with a car :D
I beg to differ. The tire pressure monitors, which have been mandatory since 2008 in all cars in the US, are part of a wireless CAN bus. You can, and people have, access the wired CAN bus through this interface which is connected to the ECU. All's you need is a transceiver to join and this was in its infancy as early as 2010. This might be a patch job, but all new cars have wireless CAN bus capability.
Nice catch LOL
Of course they would only show a prototype where they had to rip the dash off to install it. But it does show what can be done to make a car behave differently
yeah, they definitely offed that hastings bro
thats really coool
What sound is the car making when the brakes aren't working? What's that grinding sound?
And people think Hastings was an accident?!
You mean the electronic one that only works when you are standing still? :-D
Thats why I only ride old skool, bump that new age crap

+Byrdie Byrd Ehh, im with ya there. Screw this new bullshit.
You can change some things, like braking and acceleration, but not direction. Badly written software without hardware overrides is the problem; they need to be correctly isolated.
Are you talking the switch or the ebrake? I have never seen an electronic ebrake but have been out of the auto business for quite some time. Also never seen a digital start switch...except for the new Jags I think.
Not very impressive considering they got to directly connect their computers to the cars computers. So as long as they do not connect wifi to the cars computers I guess everything is safe.

Can you say OnStar?

***** if it has the ability to connect with one. I don't see why there would be a wireless connection available though.

***** Or maybe break into the hood of the car and install a remote control system yourself, random cars could become the common tools of criminals

It is definitely possible to hack into the car's seamingly defenseless bluetooth and override it to get to the ECU.

According to Stuff They Don't Want You To Know you can aperantly do it by loading some malicious code onto a cd and putting it into the car's CD ROM drive.
SOUTH BEND, IN!! I grew up there, that is US 933 and south bend is not scenic, if you want to talk scenic you should have gone to Argos, IN. But that was very impressive, I might say.
Highly unlikely. The Mercedes Diana was driving was far far less sophisticated than say the car Michael Hastings was driving.
Bingo.
South Bend, Indiana! They're literally a quarter-mile from my girlfriend's folks' place, and only maybe 3 miles from me. Small world!
When he said he wanted to jump out they should have activated the seat belt and told him "you are staying".
Depends on the type of car, some are mechanical and some are electronic.
Yup. Completely. "Hey guaise, check out what I found".
Notre dame south bend baby!
1976 Chevy Malibu
And you think they wont be able to provide a pre-installed car or place a receiver when the car is left unattended? Anything is possible if you have the right resources!
Does the Purius connect with internet?
why did they have to tear the dashboard apart? Also, is the throttle mechanical or electronic? or both?
Can they do this wireless by attaching something to the car?
Manual throttle, brakes, etc. ftw..
If that could be done wireless it would be interesting.
thats awesome..when r u guyz ganna release the app. for this? lol
those also are run on computer chips. the ignition can be remotely turned on, or off. the emergency break can also be disabled. The speed of the car can actually be forcefully increased so you can be sped up to maximum speed, the breaks disabled, the windows and locks fixed closed, and nothing to do but pray you don't die.
OnStar in GM vehicles can do all of it wirelessly and always could, including turning off the engine, controlling brakes, locks, etc. Similarly, while they plugged in, others have done it wirelessly. You could probably rig a wifi module or even a cell phone and plug it in. It does vary though, the extent of use of those control modules. This prius has a ton of them.
so I'll never own a car that is newer than what.....2005? this is ridiculously scary
Every car since about 1982 can be controlled that way to some degree. If you have ABS, the brakes can be disabled by the computer. The engine computer can tell the engine to run, not run, or run poorly. The transmission computer can throw it into all kinds of weird modes. I'm decomputerizing my 1999 vehicle, not due to hacker concerns, but because there are significant computer problems, and I'm upgrading for performance. It's amazing how much the computer can do, that I'm working around.
It has already be demonstrated that a physical connection or close proximity is not necessary. See the DARPA video on the topic. The researcher explains there have been exploits using something as infected audio/music that when put in a car CD player will execute whatever it was programmed to do. With ODB3 and all of it's wireless features there will be even more vectors of attack available. Right now you have OnStar, radio, Bluetooth, CD Players, and others.
showing early proof of concept for the downside and dangers of fully electronic car
Anyway you can lock the seat bell and doors and make it inescapable?
they could also disable the airbags and seatbelts, causing almost certain death
I really love my 94 accord all of the sudden.
Obviously, Hasting couldn't or it was so sudden and fast, he didn't even think about that...
Hummm ... I'm going in the OLD USED CAR business!!! Where's the FRED FLINSTONE CAR WHEN YOU NEED ONE????
But how much did they have to hack up the car to get into the system? I don't see a dash anymore.
I find it interesting that they had to switch from the Prius to a Ford at 3:42 to show off the brakes failing.
