"Rim light" is the current preferred term for highlighting the edges of things. "Catch light" is the highlight(s) in the eyes that makes them look alive and sparkling. Love the reaction videos and your breakdown of their processes.

Watch this from start to end. Awesome value Dean! Thank you so much. You are 100% right, I keep saying that to people, they think that there is a perfect way or tool to do things, but Photoshop has 1000000 ways of doing the same thing which is great, because we are all different. The skills Imad and Phase Runner have with this painting over is something that takes years to master, that on top of the other skills that we need to work in Photoshop :))

So, the purpose of using quick selection tool in photoshop is to quickly comp up the artwork at a faster rate. Most designers in the movie entertainment do this technique all the time, and when the artwork has been selected by the client. It’s up to the studio to hire a finisher/retoucher to rebuild the artwork that the artist created. It’s a faster/ loser way of working. But at the end…. The pen tool is more precise way of working on a higher end. It’s up to the artist on how they work. And if they received training from a creative director . They would be thought the proper way, using the pen tool or the brush tool. It depends on the teacher (creative director).

WOW! So much to take in!!! Like you I'm trying to take my artwork to another level. I currently use Daz Studio for 3D compositions but I'd like to have that "painted feel" to my pieces and this video is inspiring. Definitely gonna check out your Epic Overlays bundle as I'm sure I can put them to good use!

Ex student of Deans and I can attest to the fact we were strongly encouraged to use the pen tool over any auto select tools! But great to see some examples of when a crisp edge isn’t necessary.

10:20 he's not using adjustment layers, he's painting directly into the pixel layers themselves, or layers above, working 'destructively'. The one advantage with this is that it always allows direct selection of image elements with the move tool on 'auto-select', which can also be reached with a shortcut. Unfortunately if you use masked adjustment layers, auto-select will not select the active layer, it will select the layers above. It's something I was asking Adobe to have as a preference years ago.

@@AbbeyMarieEsp Abbey, I was asking that years ago, and gave up. Auto-select has never been able to ignore masked adjustments sadly, I think its “ironed-into” the way photoshop handles the transparency of a layer, and layer masks. Seem to remember Chris Cox or someone arguing it would require too much to achieve it - when you take into account layer groups, and sub-groups, with their potential masks also.

@@PhotoManipulation He’s a painter with 'painting from scratch' background as a starting point. The brushes he links to are a huge selection that'll take you… anyway, generous of him of course.

Imad, at least once, gave away his brush colection in one of his videos. It is insane! I'm sure it will still be up for download. Otherwise, let me know; I'll sent it to you. @Imad you are awsome!!!!
