I’ve been detecting for a year. On a real tight retired budget so started with a small garden hand shovel we had. Then sharpened it to make cleaner plugs. Finally got a DR ÖTEK Hand digger. Nice piece and came with a belt loop sheath to carry it. For places that want minimal damage I’ve also used a weed pulling tool that looks like a screwdriver with a forked end. Good for coins just below the surface. New subscriber. Thank you for protecting us and the constitution so we can detect.

Maybe wouldn't use a shotgun but people should use what works best for them to dig the plug. I use a tool from Japan called a Nisaku and its fantastic, there's no bend in it buy the handle to get in the way when you gotta go deep. It's serrated on 1 side and a blade on the other side but it's not sharp. 💯 would recommend 💯

Correct sir. I've seen idiots digging with kiri knives, and short machetes. . Being inoffensive and blending in is the name of the game . I cringe at the site of shovels in the park.

Aren’t double edged knives (daggers) illegal anyway?

Not here in Michigan. You can carry about any knife you choose.

This is what i was referring to by how you made it come across a bit more exaggerated than it was. You made it seem like they were carrying a foot long double edge dagger. When it had the same looking blade as a hori hori except it was flat tipped, and serrated on edge.

  • @freedomdiggersmetaldetecti8964

Well, Since I don't own a horI hori, I used what I had to illustrate my point. I even mentioned the hori hori. There really was no need to exaggerate, because the overwhelming majority of people I spoke with about the subject (I put up a poll in all the groups I run) agree that not only is any type of knife a terrible digging tool, but it's about guaranteed to get you unwanted attention in most urban areas. I never mentioned length, and the blade I held up that's of similar design (albeit pointed tip) is close to the same length. I stand by my point (no pun intended).

As someone who was in that group and saw said post. You seemed to leave out alot of key information like that the knife was blunt tipped like a big flathead screwdriver and was more than half the size you compared it to, and it wasn't a double edge blade. It was serrated on the entirety of one edge and looked almost exactly like a hori hori digger. It even had the inches marks (4 inches) on it exactly like a dig tool. Your making it seem as though the original poster was the one arguing with you, their post was asking for opinions on using it as a "secondary" dig tool instead of a occasional screw driver. They lived in Oklahoma if i remember correctly which is a open carry firearm state, and nearly half the people walking down the street have visible knifes on their belt. Much different environment than Michigan i imagine. Depends on the area you are in. Majority of people in the south wouldnt even bat an eye at the sight of a knife. To someone who knows nothing about detecting a hand digger in a sheath looks just like a big bowie knife from a distance. I agree to exercise caution and to get a feel for the area first but as someome from south, it can be quite a different environment and less fear mongering/karen type behavior that than the more liberal states.

I clearly stated it wasn't the OP who was arguing. Blunt tipped, measurements on the blade, whatever you do, it's a knife not a digging tool. Yes, it depends on where you are how something is going to be reacted to, but it's important to remember that new people that are impressionable from all over the country see that post. I took it as a teachable moment and made this video which has been very well received by my viewers. My mission here is to educate & inform detectorists, and carrying and using a tool that looks like a weapon is a bad idea. Not only that, they suck at digging. Here in Michigan I can open carry my firearm if I wish, but I carry concealed. Just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you should. Thanks for watching.

@@freedomdiggersmetaldetecti8964 i understand where you are coming and i agree to some extent, and i was more reffering to some of the commenters taking jabs at the guy for asking by calling them kyles and karens looking for trouble". Yes there was some people being slightly confrontational about it towards you just have to be aware of our surroundings and the judge the type of area we are in. I'm sure they arent just walking around with the knife in their hand the whole time, which could get dome looks im sure. I imagine itvis used fairly sparingly and as with hand digging anything, you kneel down, remove from sheath, use it and its back in the sheath again before you're on your feet again. So i wouldn't imagine that catching too much attention in most places. My point mostly being that a person who doesn't know about detecting could just as easily think something like the grave digger hand tool is a huge knife as well.

That guy is just another Kyle looking to start trouble. He should marry a Karen and have a Bart Simpson. People like him eventually will get our hand diggers classified as a weapon. "No weapons allowed in parks".
