Digging for SMOKY QUARTZ CRYSTALS & AQUAMARINE at Emerald Hollow Mine | Gem Mining North Carolina
This is episode 2 of our epic rockhounding road trip across North Carolina. In today's video, we are heading to the small town of Hiddenite, North Carolina in the search for Emeralds, Aquamarine, Smoky Quartz, Rutile, Tourmaline, Mica and so much more. This locality is home to over 60 different minerals including the extremely rare gem Hiddenite.
We start the prospecting adventure by doing some creeking, where you can dig and sluice in the mineral-rich stream on the land. Some parts of the stream are enriched with non-native minerals to create an educational experience and a rewarding dig for smaller children. So keep in mind that not all of what you find in the creek will be from the area. The helpful staff will give you insights on which areas to explore depending on your interests and they can identify your finds.
After prospecting the creek, we go to the public digging site called East Ridge Mining Area to find a vein of mica and a pocket of crystals. We end up finding fantastic specimens of Smoky Quartz and a small Aquamarine. We also find tons of Mica at this beautiful location.
Besides offering a public digging access to the native geological features, the Emerald Hollow Mine also has enriched buckets for purchase and is a host to educational field trips etc.
A huge thank you to the owner of the mine Jason Martin, his whole family and the staff for the amazing hospitality and generous experience they provided. They are great people and I highly recommend visiting this mine any time of the year!

Some real nice crystals....
We were digging around that same pocket in mid October, and my son found a beautiful piece of quartz. I love that is possible to pan and dig there. I walked away from the creek with a small piece of amythest and a small emerald. It's an 8 hour drive, but I'm hoping to take a mining trip back there and to some of the other mines in the area next summer.

I have been there a few times.. 👍. One of the times I was there I dug for 4 hours and hit a gigantic Crystal Boulder it was so big I had to just take my sledgehammer and start breaking gigantic large handfuls off . .. 💪💯❤️💎 Another time I was there I found handfuls of little baby emeralds in a small pocket.. 😇🙏🥰😍
Very cool 👍🏼 💎👀💜 Next year I’m going to be in Arkansas sometime for sure. North Carolina is definitely on my wish list. Let me know if you’re ever in Missouri

Need to take a squirt bottle with you. And when you see something take your time to get it out in 1 piece. Looks like you may have been the one that fractured that crystal with the prybar from underneath

Hello! My husband and I plan on taking a trip to Emerald Hallow Mine in a few weeks! I read what tools they provide to you on their page, but I'm a little confused. Haha it says no metal tools. Is that right? What do they give you to use exactly? Just so I know what we should bring! Thank you!!
@melchiah501
2 жыл бұрын
I'm actually at the mine right now. You can bring whatever metal tools you like if you plan on digging (just nothing motorized). The "no metal tools" part is if you plan on going down to their creek to search for things. We brought a cart with us as it's a bit of a walk from the dig area to the wash area and if you load your bucket up, it can get heavy. They also have shovels and buckets here if you want to use their tools.
Do you have to bring your own tools to the mine?
@CrystalsofArkansas
Жыл бұрын
I brought my own. They did provide the screen though! If you don’t have your own tools, check directly with the mine to find out if and what they can provide.
Are there any additional tools or stuff we should bring that isnt provided?
@CrystalsofArkansas
Жыл бұрын
I would recommend bringing all your own tools. If you are digging in the pit area, bring a pick, shovel, buckets, hammer, chisel. They do provide the screens and some other basic tools but things may change so I would recommend checking with the mine before your trip.
What month was this? I'm not sure when I should visit from California

This was in July. The area is amazing and the mountains are beautiful. I think late Spring to fall is most enjoyable. Summer is great because you get to play in the creek and sluice to cool off and everything is in the shade!
In the rules it says do not dig by tree roots, that's where he found a lot of good stuff??
I went to the hiddenite mine last n NC and looked in a stream…Turns out they salt the damn area with random minerals from all around the world! Pissed me off.
@CrystalsofArkansas

Yeah the stream area is super salted and we don’t recommend it for serious rockhounds. Stick to the virgin soil for the real experience

Too bad it's salted around there

The pile is native dirt but they do offer salted buckets which sometimes contaminate the pile.
