Sunstone Mining in Oregon at Spectrum Sunstone Crystal Mine

We are on a rockhounding road trip in the Western part of the USA and in this video we visit the Spectrum Sunstone Mine. This mine is located near Plush in Oregon, USA. Join Dominik as he digs through untouched earth to find precious and valuable Sunstone Gems.
This mine is open to the public where you can dig your own sunstones. The crystals are plentiful and colorful and extremely appealing to find and look at.
The area is very remote and the climate is harsh. Good luck on your digs!
This is episode two of a three-part series of Rockhounding the West. Subscribe and join us on the next adventure!

Awesome Sunstone mate 💯👍💯 Btw, What I associate with sunstone is the stone that we Vikings used to navigate the sea in fog or cloudy weather. (🤭) A theory exists that the sunstone had polarizing attributes and was used as a navigational instrument by seafarers in the Viking Age. - Sunstones are also mentioned in the inventories of several churches and one monastery in 14th-15th-century Iceland and Germany.

Oregon Sunstones are probably my favorite kind of Feldspar gemstone. The ones with red, green, and copper Schiller are amazing and sometimes if you're lucky you will even get some that have "common moonstone" flash due to the layering, too.

I'm curious as to whether or not Sunstone could be mistaken for rose quartz or vise versa?? Excellent video. So badly wish I could afford to travel and visit some of these locations that are out of the state of North Carolina thank you for sharing and the education value of your videos

There are 2 different common names for "Sunstone" on the Internet. "Oregon Sunstone" is unlikely to be confused with rose quartz. The look of the rough is completely different than rose quartz in daylight given it's translucence and coloration. There's another type of "sunstone" that is opaque (Norway, India, Africa) and does look like a rose quartz with more orange specs and "adventurescence" in it and is typically shown in connection with shakras and crystal healing, but when you polish or facet it, the look is completely different. I would not consider it "gemstone"...more like colored rock that has shimmer. Oregon Sunstone Feldspars are definitely crystals. There are other feldspar crystals that are mined and used for jewelry, but the Oregon Sunstone is the only "known" location that has copper shiller. You can buy tumbled chips, rough, or finished faceted stones on places like etsy. If you look up "oregon sunstone" vs "sunstone chakra" you'll easily be able to see the differences.

Oregon sunstone is never pink, and shows perfect cleavage, so would be hard to confuse with rose quartz.

So what the Vikings used to allegedly navigate with and called sunstone wasn’t really sunstone at all? I read somewhere else that it was selenite but that wouldn’t be very good on a salty sea. Had something to do with double refraction or something like that. Thoughts?
