Dig Deeper Episode 63 - Under the Rubble Part 3: All Along the Watchtower
Jamestown Rediscovery's Site Supervisor Anna Shackelford describes the final results of excavations that occurred from 2021 - 2023 at a site north of the 1906 Memorial Church Tower. This information includes exciting finds such as such as postholes that may be associated with a watchtower attached to the 1607 palisade line as well as several early 17th century artifacts (e.g., brigandine armor and a complete matchlock lockplate).
Jamestown Rediscovery conservator Don Warmke, then describes why this complete matchlock lockplate is rare and an exciting find. He also tells how such iron artifacts are conserved to permit future research and/or display.

I don't know why, but I really enjoy the sound of the trowel scrapping the dirt at the beginning of these. These videos are great and priceless with the history and knowledge the you have gained and are gaining as you "Dig Deeper".
Good synopsis of what was done in this area. You may want to explain that while archaeology is the only way that this info can be obtained, that it is a destructive process as well - i.e. you only get "one trip to the well". This may help the public better understand why you elected to leave some features unexcavated for future archaeologists to hopefully follow in your footsteps and employ "new and improved" techniques and technology. The archaeology at Jamestown is some of the best that I have ever seen - I wish that I could have dug with you. Keep up the brilliant work!
