Different "Inline Engine" Configurations Explained | [I2 to I8]
Introduction:
The straight or inline engine is an internal combustion engine with all cylinders aligned in one row and having no offset. In this engine construction, the cylinders are placed in a straight line. The inline engine can have up to 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 8 cylinders.
Inline engines are smaller in overall physical dimensions than designs such as the radial and can be mounted in any direction. These engines are very common in vehicles with an engine capacity of up to 3 liters. Although, the manufacturers term an inline engine with four cylinders as an Inline-4 engine. They usually denote it by I4 or L4 in a car’s nomenclature.
1) Straight-Twin Engine: A straight-twin engine, also known as an inline-twin, vertical-twin, or parallel-twin, is a two-cylinder piston engine with cylinders arranged in a line along with a common crankshaft.
2) Straight-3 Engine: A straight-three engine (also called an inline-triple or inline-three) is a three-cylinder piston engine where cylinders are arranged in a line along with a common crankshaft.
3) Straight-4 engine: An inline-four cylinder (also known as an I-4 or straight-four) engine is a very popular choice for today’s economy vehicles as the simple design allows for both efficiency and perfect primary balance. In an I-4 engine, all 4 cylinders are mounted in a straight line along with a single crankshaft and oriented in an inclined or vertical plane
4) Straight-5 Engine: The straight-five or inline-five engine is an IC engine with five cylinders aligned in one row, sharing a single-engine block and crankcase. The justification for a five-cylinder engine is that it is compact as an inline-four and almost as smooth as a straight-six engine.
5) Straight-6 Engine: The straight-six engine (also referred to as an inline-six engine; abbreviated I6 or L6) is an internal combustion engine with six cylinders mounted in a straight line along the crankcase with all the pistons driving a common crankshaft (straight engine).
6) Straight-8 Engines: The straight-eight engine or inline-eight engine (often abbreviated as I8 or L8) is an eight-cylinder internal combustion engine with all eight cylinders mounted in a straight line along the crankcase.

I love the sound of the TVR Tuscan inline 6. I grew up with many AMC cars in my family and know how to work on them. Inline 6 all the way! Now I drive a Gogoro S1 motorcycle which has an electric motor, but the straight 6 still has a place in my heart.

The AMC inline 6s were easily killable. Usually the result of willfully neglected maintenance. The engines were actually built tighter than say a Ford inline. Unfortunately the carburation and intakes on the 199, 232, and 258 were tuned towards the economy end of the spectrum. I never understood why they did not go to fuel injection prior to the 4.0. The 4.0 is just begging for some brave soul to cut apart a set of Ford or Chevrolet small block V-8 heads for a cross flow head on the 4.0. The bore center is the same as the Ford Windsor and Cleveland at 4.380". And only .020" less than the Chevy SB and the LS/LT family.
Your explaining very concise and quality

Fails to mention that most Volvo's built from 1991 to 2016 have an I5, both petrol, and diesel versions, basically making Volvo the I5 king. Volvo did indeed use the VW I5 diesel for a while before they came up with their own design in 2001.

There are no car with straight eight engines well not for many , many decades. The only straight eight still produced or used would be in large ships.
Happy Christmas 🎄 Thanks 👍
Thank you very much kind stranger
Many straight motors in my career. I have owned numerous straight 6 engines and have found them generally satisfactory. Installed in old pickup trucks they were motors with good torques characteristics and quite smooth. In the older vehicles that required more maintenance the straight 6 motors were much easier to work on I have also owned straight 2, 3 and 4 cylinder motorcycles. The two cylinders was a bit shakey. The 3 cylinder was a shaft driven Yamaha, very smooth good torque, Engine sound was surprisingly pleasant. The 4 cylinder motorcycle is a late model sport bike with balancing shaft and is incredibly powerful with quite reasonable vibration. I seems that instead of the 4 cylinder having one or two vibration pronounced vibration points it has just a slight vibration at all speeds. I would be curious to know more about the 3 cylinder firing order and vibration peaks.
Ford did a lot of work on inline fives in the 20s and early 30s. Henry Ford was never happy with how they ran. He wanted more power without having to go with a 6 cylinder. Hence the flathead V-8. A lot of US inline 6s pre WWll had only 3 or 4 main bearings. One issue with a 4 main bearing crank is in a fully pressurized oiling system is two of the main bearings have to eupply oil to two rod journals while the front and rear bearing only supply the #1 and #6 rod journals. In a three main bearing crank oiling is dependent on splash oiling.
I enjoyed the presentation
You forgot to mention that every Chevrolet produced from 1929 until 1954 had an inline 6.
Excellent!

I remember when my grandpa had a 1980s Ford Falcon with a straight/inline 6 engine. It was fire in that car till he sold it some years ago
The I2 is also used in '87 Lada Oka (VAZ-1111)
Straight 6s usually had 15362 firing order. Wow I miss working on those things.

Chryslers Slant Six was nothing more than a normal inline six leaned over at a 30° angle from the vertical. This was done for no other reason than to lower hood lines on the 1961 Valiant (1). And Chrysler was not the only manufacturer to lean an inline over. In my mind a true Slant would be an engine th hat has a horizontal pan rail with the cylinder bores at an angle. Two examples would be the Pontiac Trophy Four and the International fours used in the Scout. The first being 1/2 of a 389 and the other 1/2 of the IH 304 (2). 1) The butt ugliest car ever built in the US. 2) No relation to the AMC 304.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Also Nash. Straight 8s generally suffer from the tendency of the crankshaft to twist under load.

diesel straight 4 bro🇹🇭
The only practical application for a straight 8 engine is a stationary application such as generators and specific machinery. As for why many car manufacturers who discontinued the inline 6 dispite it's smoothness, balance, reliability & having been available on virtually every make at one time or another, I suspect has to do with length, particularly as transverse FWD cars began to dominate the market in the mid 1980s as well as becoming more compact, a V6 being able to fit in FWD and RWD cars, station wagons, vans and pick ups, seemed more practical from an assembly line standpoint, therefore largely replaced the inline 6 which was typically only usable in the larger RWD body on frame cars which pretty much ruled the roads prior to the 1980s when fuel economy really became a focal point in the auto industry after the two oil shocks in the 1970s.

Even aside from the oil crises and CAFE standards, some manufacturers figured out that by taking their V8s and deleting two cylinders, they could make a more cost-effective 6 cylinder, with the added benefit of being more compact. GM started doing this as early as the 60s
