Differences FT3D vs FT5D

So far, there are a few differences that will surprise you when you take a look at what Yaesu has done with discontinuing the FT3D and now replacing it with the FT5D. For most, the enhancements will be welcomed.

Love my FT3DR. But when I saw the FT5DR I was very excited. It was short lived. Yaesu wasted the opportunity to give it full duplex capability. I was hoping they had, so I could use it for sat operations. If they had, I’d have bought one in a New York minute. As it is, there isn’t enough difference to justify replacing my FT3DR.

I have always enjoyed your videos. They are extremely helpful to those of us who have not been hams for a long time. I appreciate the way you inform and educate us without assuming that everyone in your audience knows all they tech-talk that's out there. This video in particular has helped me decide to purchase the FT5D. Thanks you for what you do!

Been debating the 5D for it's features and newness vs the 3D for its features and the lower cost. This video helped me land on the 5D. When we're down to worrying about the COLOR of a clip or a button, we're probably out of legitimate complaints. Great review. Enjoyed your narration style.

It's was crazy how many hams were worried about that button. But, I think it's just a great talking point. The important part is, do you like how it sounds and does it do what you need. I'm liking the 5D, I think I make a good choice.

I am not a english native, so I need to ask: Let`s say I could get a 3d significantly cheaper than the 5d (difference about 120 EUR) and I`d be happy with the functions and haptic. Do I understand you right that the 5d does not offer features that I would miss on the 3d if I used it for basic operations incl. C4FM? I love the touch screen, thats basically the reason why I would prefer an 3d or 5d over an FT70. But I am not sure if the 5d is worth the extra money for me as "casual" user. All the best, 73s!

I never used c4fm on any of these radios. But, are you missing out , not really. The 5d is louder and color. It die have some buttons in different layout. For me, if you can save money on a 3d - consider it. Keep watching KZread video and make a choice. Good luck. -73

A question on the screen type and durability. What screen type has this radio got? Is it resistive touch or surface capacative glass similar to a mobile phone?

  • @frankwc0o

The glass response like a phone. The ft2d is the one that doesn’t. I would go to a store and touch the screen to make sure it’s to ur standards.

@@craigduncan8121 That's a good question. I couldn't tell you, but they feel and sound the same type of material. I would ask others if they know any better. Maybe in the manual it says what type of glass it is. I can say both respond very well when touched.

Not with a VHF antenna. I don't listen to SW, but with my EFHW, I can hear some AM stations. For that is all you can hear with the radio.

USB is a max of 5.1 volts, so unless they added a buck-burst chip, it could not properly charge the Lithium-Ion batteries!

Not true for the last couple of years. USB C Power Delivery (PD) can go to 19vdc. My simple car charger can supply 18W (9vdc @ 2A) via USB C PD. I would love to have the option of charging and powering my HT this way.

@@ToppKatt7 I know, it's horrible when you watch a video and they drag on and on about nothing... I'm sure, this video doesn't do that - for example, I don't talk about the Bezel for 20 min and then talk about the screen for another 10 min. As for the audio, the audio is fine. The issue is the speaker - GOD gave me a soft voice. I checked my annoying voice and moved the volume slider, and I was able to listen to this long conversation that I had with my audience. Have a great day Barry M.
