One was incredibly destructive resulting in the most financially devastating riots in US history, the other broke some windows and did some other minor damage to one building One attacked the government, the other attacked everyday people, neighbors and neighborhoods, burnt down entire city blocks and impacted areas for years to come. One destroyed the lives and businesses of the poor and underserved, one pissed off a bunch of rich politicians One was underblown and trivialized, the other was blown entirely out of proportion One riot resulted in the death of at least 25 people (it is hard to believe it's that low). One resulted in the death of one unarmed protestor.

100%. Derek Chauvin was thrown under the bus for the ravenous mob. Georgie boy Floyd died from an overdose of fentanyl from the "speedball" he had swallowed in an attempt to not get busted with it. The whole knee on the neck thing was highly overblown and furthered as a political tool for the left to yet again sow racial tensions. Chauvin went out of his way to try and make Floyd more comfortable after Floyd cried constantly about being claustrophobic and Chauvin did so likely because of the police being villainized so badly at the time. If Chauvin would have just let Floyd stay in the car while EMS was in route then Floyd would have overdosed there instead and Chauvin would have been criticized for not helping him so honestly he was unfortunately fucked either way.

That young lady reminds me so much of my self when I was her age. Consistently growing up thinking that we’re victims in this country because of the color of our skin and we’re not equal which is completely not true. Black people are the ones that oppress themselves with a victim mentality. We have the same opportunity just like anyone else in this prosperous country. We must stop thinking that we are systemically oppressed when that is not true, we oppress ourselves when we decide to make the wrong decisions. I’m not saying that there is not racist people out there but the majority of this country is not racist. I don’t share a victim mentality, I also don’t deny systemic racism exists. To paint all Black people as having a victim mentality is purposefully minimizing. The damage that has been done. If there is no systemic oppression against Black people, explain the crack-cocaine epidemic, the 1994 Crime Bill, the school-to-prison pipeline, & redlining (Wells Fargo has been sued more than twice in the last 15yrs for redlining practices & denying mortgages to qualified Black applicants). What evidence do you have the “we have the same opportunity” when ACCESS precedes that opportunity. We have a nation that undervalues public education, and collects property taxes to fund that education. What evidence do you have that the majority of Black people don’t acknowledge being an American comes with a better quality of life compared to other nations? American Blacks have every right to criticize the nation our ancestors built. I’m a veteran and college-educated, and would never make the ridiculous comments you just did. Poverty affects everyone, and the majority of Black America is lower working class or impoverished. Refusing to acknowledge that there ARE barriers, despite those of us that succeed is wild. Of course there are issues within the culture itself, and those issues all stem from poverty. If you’re going to say “we”, don’t dismiss the larger issues simply because you made it.

Sadly this topic was dramatically opinionated. There was no insurrection on January 6. I feel like people dont know the definition of an insurrection and this should be explained from the start of the conversation. Secondly the fact that we allow people let alone students believe that the BLM riots only caused "minor damage" to the communities it was engaged in is ridiculous. In the George Floyd riots, at least 19 more people were killed (some of whom were black people). In the LA riots the death toll was around 63. And then, ya, there was the astronomical amount of property damage and rioters thinking it was OK to loot or commit arson (sometimes justifying it as reparation's or claiming it was insured and therefore OK).

When Trump was misquoted as saying that Jan 6 was an insurrection, he was referring to the fact that he had called upon the National Guard to be at the capitol but Nancy Peloci called it off and reduced the police presence in effect allowing a worse outcome. He was saying Nancy Pelocy prevented security measures for the purpose of getting a reaction she could label an insurrection.

I get so depressed when I see modern college students "think out loud". These weak, manipulated minds are the future of our country. So, we have no future - unless the unindoctrinated working class, that did NOT go to college, will take the reigns when it is their time. If a protest is 90% peaceful then yes, the majority of attendees are not guilty of a crime. The other 10% of non-peaceful protesters put a stain on the rest of the participants. You can't discard the 10% violent protesters at a BLM riot and describe the rest of the protests as peaceful, and then turn around and use the 10% violent protesters on J6 to apply to the 90% peaceful protesters. That's the entire issue, do the violent ruin for the peaceful and if so is that the case consistently?

Secret Service took President Trump to an underground bunker because of BLM riots. More police were injured in the March 29, 2020 riots and several times more property damage than on Jan 6th.

As a Canadian the main difference seemed to be that there was nothing on fire with a reporter insisting everything was mostly peaceful.

This lecture is from 3 weeks ago, and the participants are still going along with the original narratives which have both been proven to be false. That girl is a forever victim.

Today there are two realities: Social Media Reality, based on opinions, platforms, agendas, feelings and framing, and Real Reality, based on history, economics, facts and science. You could change a Real Reality persons opinion by exposing more facts, history etc.. There was only a little bit of destruction are you kidding ! Entire communities were devastated and have never recovered from those so-called peaceful protest so you need to get a grip and understand that losing a entire community an entire shopping district is not a little bit of destruction .

I like that this teacher teach how to analyse/criticize/synthetize events and ideas, instead of telling students what is good or bad idea. But there is a lot of work to do with that girl.

The one thing that is also missing is the disproportionate amount of police killed by insert the metrics used in this video. 11:14 A little chaos? I hope this young lady looks into the deaths from both instances it was far more than a little chaos.

I like the professor and think he is a good dude.. What I dislike about him is he is far more biased than people think. It would do the students far more good if he would tell them the actual truth. Not down play what really happened. At this point he is CNN at the "mostly peaceful protest" with buildings burning down behind him, @@1upads

I still sense a left leaning bias in the Professor of this class. It's getting better, it's getting more unbiased, but it's still a bit left leaning. Of course in he can have his opinion, but I just think in his class it does better justice to his students for him to leave any bias he has at the door and teach from truth, complete truth. For example, BLM was not minor damage. It was incredibly damaging to the tune of Billions of dollars and dozens of lives. My own city suffered damage. Teach in truth no matter how much you may dislike the truth.

I would like to see a comparable analysis of sentencing of those involved in both instances as a whole or average sentencing. To see if the system is benefiting an individual group over the other. If we are to comapre these specific events.

I don't agree with that. There are times when people get upset and behave unreasonably. Knee-jerk assumption that another person's actions are wrong is, as you say, wrong. However, to say someone's actions are wrong after consideration of their concerns and other possible actions is fair.

I think he handles them with kid gloves sometimes because he doesn't want to offend anyone. More and more is coming out every day about the election corruption, about all these mayor's and prosecutors on witch hunts while also misusing funds. Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd’s carotid for almost ten minutes, regardless of whether or not he had an adrenaline secreting tumor or what drugs he was on he wasn’t overdosing or dying until blood flow to his brain was obstructed for almost double the amount of time it takes to develop irreversible brain damage. Bottom line Derek Chauvin is a murderer and exactly where he belongs. George Floyd’s death was a direct result of willful and purposeful actions taken by the police during that encounter. Even someone not on drugs and tumor free would have very possibly died as well. Derek Chauvin had a pattern of this type of knee on neck restraint(never for as long as he used it on Floyd) and use of excessive force that resulted in a subsequent 8 million dollar settlement between the City and two other people victimized by Chauvin.

I think a stat that puts this conversation into more perspective is to compare these numbers to the total number of Americans that die due to medical malpractice each year. Estimates put us north of 250,000 Americans annually. That is 250X the total number killed by police officers.... So, do we make the same argument that doctors and nurses are "systematically murderous"?

Yes. I work in the medicial field, and there is now mandatory continuing education that medical people should "stop being racist" and start caring for black people as well as white people. Thr evidence for the racist lack of care, is of course a difference in health statistically. This isnt blamed on poverty, or cultural choices (weight, inner-city drugs, city gang violence). No. The mandatory continuing ed, requires that medical personel promise to be less racist in the coming year. Everything is political now

Why didn’t he point out that if 30% of unarmed blacks are killed by police, that means 70% aren’t black? Also unarmed doesn’t mean not deadly.

I appreciate the professor clarifying the statistics about fatal police encounters. I wish he included the stats for officers and all first responders killed in the line of duty

It's 19....but not 30. the last time I checked. a tiny number still relative to the population of the black community and tinier still relative to the general population. The media is all about pushing narratives if the see some political advantage in it for their preferred party...which would be democrats 90 percent of the time.

This professor is amazing. Really refreshing to hear these discussions and instead of getting upset, everyone is being forced to exercise critical thinking, at least somewhat. Also 17:59 Is pretty straightforward, once the “protest” turns violent.

This is 1st year sociology class, so the students are just getting started with their education. I doubt the “kids” are as gullible as the people that participated in a BLM March or the Stop the Steal protest on J6 at the Capital.

This guy is the near perfect teacher - teaching young people how to think, not what to think. We can all learn a lot from watching his vids.

Great teachers help challenge your assumptions and lack of thinking. This guy is great. Thanks Professor!

Both groups had a built up pool of rage, needing a small trigger to justify their outlet. Both also acted on a limited/skewed understanding of reality.

Not both. One side was as protesting a stolen election. Few of those tens of thousands of protesters rioted. The only person murdered was unarmed white woman by a black racist cop. With BLM the entire movement is a lie, violent riots after George Floyd overdosed led to billions in damage, dozens dead, and lasted for months. J6 was mostly peaceful and lasted one day. BLM was a violent uprising and lasted for months. So stop lying and equating the two.

That young has already earned an advanced degree in Victimhood. It will serve her as well as all the other humanities degrees out there😢 The higher education system needs to be declared the enemy of the people.
