I like how you suggest that Skeet is for those who've mastered trap or sporting clays -- but here in the States, it's much easier to find a skeet range (unless you're a member of a club that has both) than a trap field, and both are more common than Sporting Clays because of the much larger land area (=> capital investment) requirement for the latter. I've shot skeet twice now; did MUCH better the second time with a little basic coaching (ten or twelve targets in each of three rounds vs. one in two rounds on my first outing), but haven't found a place to try trap yet -- and sporting clays is expensive (target fees as well as shells). With an 870 as my only shotgun, and still new to the pump action, American Trap (with no doubles) looks like the easiest to learn, but it looks like I'll have to join a club to try it.

That’s interesting you say that. In my experience, also in the US, Trap fields were common but it was difficult to find skeet outside of some membership only based clubs. This must be more regional in the US for what’s more common.

I've only become interested in shotgun since moving to the South (North Carolina) and around here it's almost all skeet, five-stand, and sporting clays, but I've heard trap is more common in the northern regions. I don't recall knowing of either one locally when I lived in Seattle, but I wasn't a shotgunner then, either...

Terrific explanation, thank you. As someone brand new to the clay shooting world, I think I'll cut my teeth on the sporting disciplines and then once confident that I can actually hit a target or two move around to the other disciplines. Perhaps one day I will progress to the F1 version :)

What recoil pad are most international skeet shooters using? It seems like either the pachmayr SC100 or the kick eez sporting clay. BTW, thanks for the stance video. I think the consistency is helping.

It's common for people to use a shorter length of pull. In terms of how much that can vary quite a bit.

I would so love to try skeet or sporting clays, but I don't think there are any ranges or fields in our area. ~~ Do the skeets fly at such a high speed that an older man would have a hard time learning to see and hit them? I guess I'm asking if skeet & sporting clays are one of those things that you really need to learn as a young person when your reflexes and eyes are much better.

I started shooting clays when I was 62. I'm now 73 and still going strong. I can't shoot as quickly as the young guys, but within my class and with the Senior Veterans, I can hold my own.

I get that the shells use 24g, 7/8 oz. of lead but at what speeds. Thanks

Do you think to learn international skeet its better to learn American skeet first ? for the beginner?

Yes. It's definitely better to start with American Skeet. If you can learn the sight pictures on the slower targets it can be very beneficial. In the meantime you can practice your gun mount at home. Once you have mastered the mount and the sight pictures, International Skeet becomes a lot easier.

You did not mention that American skeet needs to be shot in all the gauges to do all rounds. American skeet uses 12, 20, 28 and 410, though often people forego the 12 as it's basically target abuse.

The only thing I did not hear mentioned is that in the International game, the gun cannot be mounted - UNTIL THE TARGET IS THROWN. Since there is a random 0 to 3 second delay between the time the target is called for and when it actually appears, some may think that you can mount the gun after you call, but this is incorrect. The toe of the gun stock must be touching the yellow strip on the vest until the target appears out of the house.

@@GoShooting OK, I just watched it again, and although she says the gun "starting point" is at the yellow strip, she does not say "when" the gun is permitted to be mounted.

@@timothybruggeman9332 There are strict rules governing the ready position and no shooter is allowed move to mount the gun until the target or targets are released, if they do, the referee will call a no bird and issue a warning (Yellow Card) should the shooter repeat the offence a target will be lost.
