I was born in Austria and have been living in North America since age of 7. I grew up speaking Austrian dialect. I'm now 63 years old and to hear an Austrian speak makes me feel so comfortable. Thank you for the video.

Same! I studied in Germany one year and then worked / studied 1.5 years in Vienna, Austria and I am in love in Austria to this day and their beautiful dialect, and the food and the people. If I would win the lottery I would move to Austria in a heartbeat.

I was also born in Austria and moved to the United States when I was 7! It definitely brought a smile to my face to hear the Austrian dialect, especially since I am also from Salzburg and Matthias' dialect was so familiar. He reminded me a lot of my cousins.

I originally come from Maribor, Slovenia (Marburg, Slowenien). I moved to Graz, Austria 🇦🇹 with a low level of German language knowledge. I was lost. Then I worked in Stuttgart, Germany 🇩🇪 and was overjoyed to finally understand people. Now I live in Zürich, Switzerland. 🇨🇭 Don’t ask me how I am. 🥺😭

That's pretty funny, I think you can drive from Maribor to Graz in about 45 minutes right? Or an hour tops. I used to drive down to Slovenia to the border to put petrol in my car and buy cigarettes and booze, and a couple of times I drove down to Maribor back in the 90s when I lived in Obersteiermark.

Dass der Matthias kein Wiener, sondern ein Oberösterreicher ist, das hört man sofort nach den ersten Silben. Sehr sympathisch.

Ein herrliches Video. Ich bin Amerikaner geboren und bin pensionierter Deutschlehrer. In den letzten Jahren besuche ich öfter Österreich als Deutschland. Normalerweise miete ich ein Auto am Münchner Flughafen und bin in ein Paar Stunden in Salzburg oder im Pinzgau. Wenn ich unter den Pinzgauern oder Wienern im Meeting bin, verstehe ich wenig von der Mundart. Vollcool das Ihr dieses Video gemacht habt. Ich liebe Österreich und würde gern längere Zeit da wohnen. Etliche Muster in österreichischen Mundarten fange ich allmählich an zu greifen-besonders in Salzburg und Pinzgau, z.B. „voll...,“ „Grias Di,“ „hoid amoi!“ Vergelt’s Gott für die Hilfe. Eine Bekannte aus Steiermark hat mir auch erzählt, sie würde nicht gerne in Deutschland wohnen, weil die „Språche” so schwer ist. 😂

ich bin Tiroler, ich mag überhaupt nur den Dialekt von Kufstein, Kitzbühel und Pinzgau, letzterer ist sehr ähnlich den vorgenannten Bezirken, diese gehörten bis 1504 zu Bayern liebe Grüße aus Tirol

I recommend the book Speak Austrian, it is the best handbook for the Austrian dialect

As a person who studied in Austria, I can say that it is pretty depressing to learn deutch(hoch) really hard and then going outside and not being able to understand even "komm umi" ..:) but try hard, it is beautiful country and language. And thanks for the video!

Ich als Österreicher muss sagen, dass in dem Video leider von dem Kollegen aus Salzburg nicht ganz richtig erklört wurden. Es gibt ein österreichisches Hochdeutsch, dass sich vor allem durch den Akzent, durch manche Wörter und Ausdrücke vom deutschen Hochdeutsch unterscheidet. Jeder der mal österreichisches Fernsehen bzw. Nachrichten geschaut hat, hört den Unterschied. Nachrichtensprecher, Politiker usw. sprechen hier das Hochdeutsch mit österreichischem Akzent. Das unterscheidet sich zur Schweiz, hier wird das deutsche Hochdeutsch von den Nachrichtensprechern in den Nachrichten gesprochen. Neben diesem österreichischen Hochdeutsch gibt das sehr viele Dialekte in Österreich. Das ist wichtig zu unterscheiden!

I'm English but worked for 10 years in Wels and Linz. I miss the area so much, and the wonderful, warm Austrian people.

Ich bin als Monteur in ganz Österreich unterwegs und letztes Jahr war ich hauptsächlich als kleiner Hianz aus dem Burgenland in Tirol unterwegs. Und der für mich wohl schlimmste unterschied war der gebrauch von "heben", "hebts" und "ghebt" bei vielen Tirolern nahe Innsbruck. Wenn wir Hianzn die Wörter verwenden meinen wir "etwas aufheben", in Teilen Tirols verwenden sie es für "halten", "gehalten", natürlich kam es da hin und wieder dazu das ich den Tiroler Kollegen die Finger eingezwickt habe bei der Türen oder Fenster Montage, "Heb amol di Tia" und "Heb amoi di Tia" müssen nicht unbedingt das gleiche sein 😅

Also, Ich als Bayerin fühle mich den Österreichern näher als den Norddeutschen. Mir song a deppert und sonst is a vui s`gleiche. Gruaß in`s Nochbarland bleibt`s gsund, Bussi

Kann ich verstehen. Ich komme aus Schleswig-Holstein und fühle mich den. Dänen näher viel als den Süddeutschen. :D bin aber trotzdem gerne im Süden, weil gerade deshalb dort alles aufregender ist :)

Als Tscheche konnte ich fast alle österreichischen Wörter verstehen. Hochdeutsch ist relativ einfach zu verstehen, aber österreichisches Deutsch klingt für uns Tschechen sehr natürlich :-)

Ich denke es macht 1. einen Unterschied, von wo aus Tschechien du kommst (ehem. Böhmen?) 2. Welchen Österreicher du hörst - Niederösterreicher oder Wiener wirst du eher verstehen als Tiroler.

@@bergfex1679 Wenn mal wieder ein 80jähriger Tiroler Bergbauer im TV interviewt wird, freu ich mich als Wienerim oft sehr über die Untertitel.^^ Und von hinterm Arlberg will ich gar nicht erst reden. Im Rest von Österreich kommt ich zu 98% durch.

I've been living in Vienna for 6 years now. After learning german by myself, in the last year I started learning the "wienerische Dialekt". I find it pretty cool, and even if I don't understand it all the time, the more I learn, the more I like it. Even simple words can give you troubles understanding if you don't expect them to be like that. Once someone asked me "Viel z'tun?" That would be "Viel zu tun?" - A lot to do? It's just a missing letter, but spoken fast, you can't understand the question. In my head that sounded more like "Willst du?" - Do you want? I didn't know what was she meaning. 😁

After having watched a few videos about the multitude of German dialects, I can see why it was necessary to develop Standard German. It's truly fascinating the vast spectrum of Germanic languages.

childhood holidays in Austria have conditioned me to start craving Semmeln as soon as I hear an Austrian accent. Austrian Semmeln are sooo good... Kaiserbrötchen just don't taste the same anywhere else. Austria, I miss you!

@Lindon Gashi Es sind halt alles deutsche Muttersprachler, da is das Land egal. Wir leben ja auch Räumlich alle auf einen Haufen - im Gegensatz zu den englischen Muttersprachlern, die mit UK, USA, Austrialen etc. über die ganze Welt verteilt sind.

Ich bin Franzose und lernte Germanistik. Ich war Erasmusstudent in Bayern und das war wirklich schwer für mich denn die Leute sprechen ganz anders in Bayern oder in Osterreich wo ich sehr oft reise. Jetzt ist diese bayerische-oberösterreichische Sprache das Hochdeutsch :) Wenn ich über Frankurt fliege, sage ich immer "Gruss Gott" oder "Gruss Di'" am Flughafen und ich sehe wie ein UFO aus (dencke ich!). Diese Sendung war sehr interessant. Danke für diese Arbeit! Mach's gut

Ja, man hört manchmal, dass die Deutschen auf die Begrüßung "Grüß Gott" je nach Gelegenheit auch mal spaßhalber antworten mit "wenn ich ihn sehe"! ;-)) Aber das ist nur eine Scherz-Antwort. Die Antwort wäre auch "Grüß Gott" oder etwas lockerer einfach nur "Hallo".

Viel Spass, da bekommen nicht mal Deustceh/Österreicher hin...Ich habe mal ein Au Pair Dame kennengelernt, die war in Stuttgart als Au Pair ein Jahr und dachte mit mir Norddeutschen, sie hatte ja Deutsch gelernt :-). sich unterhalten zu können. Es war mehr als lustig. So fühle ich mich immer , wenn ich als Marmeladinger nach Niederösterreich komme.....Leider im HL(Heiligen Land🙂) immer noch Ausländer.......seit 10 jahren....obwohl ich es jedes Jahr versuch.

Memories! Back in the early '80s, I belonged to a German/American singing society in Dayton, OH, USA. I took a year of conversational German and went exploring in Bayern und Salzburg. What I learned before traveling was Hochdeutsch. What I came home with was Boarische Deitsch. My Bavarian friends were delighted, while the north German friends were horrified. :D

@@theboss6616 Most dialects of Austrian German are of the Bavarian family, except for Vorarlberg whose inhabitants speak a variety of Allemannic, even the standard variety of Austrian German despite having a great deal of vocab and influence from Hochdeutsch or the Chancellory dialect of Saxony still has plenty of Bavarian influence as evidenced by Mathias here.

My mom is Austrian. We are Grazers. I know our accent is weird. (but not as difficult to understand like Bregenz) I absolutely laughed at this, especially at the Austrian greetings. I don't speak German well but I understand a lot. The erdapfel also made me laugh. My mom uses that.

@@CozetteDE Eigentlich heißt es korrekt Semmel. Im teutonischen (=deutschen) Deutsch gibt es das Wort inzwischen (im deutschen Wörterbuch der Brüder Grimm ist auch die Gebäckbezeichnung noch vorhanden) nur noch in der Farbbezeichnung: semmelfarben (Farbschlag bei Hunden, Pferden,..). Und Sackerl. Kommt vom Wort Sack. Das -erl ist ein Anhang der eine Verkleinerungsform darstellt: Sack-erl: Kleiner Sack.

Auch der Sakerl sieht mit französich "Sac" (ausgelesen "SAK" ) ähnlich zu sein. Auch war die Polizei lang als "Gendarmerie" beschreibt, ein direkt Lehnwort aus Französich. Grüss von Paris

Maybe I was lucky, but I never had any difficulties understanding and talking to austrians. Especially in Vienna, where most of the people I met, talked in Hochdeutsch.. On the other hand, the bavarians were completely different. Unfortunately my experience is that austrians are nicer than germans (tbh most of my experience is with bavarians). Also in germany when I try to talk in german, they almost instantly hear that I'm a foreigner and switch to english. But in Austria they are very patient and it's easy to communicate with them in german; if somehow I don't understand what they try to say, they explain it again.

Personally I had the opposite experience! Nobody tried to switch to English when I talked to them in German, but the Austrians seemed colder than the Germans. Neither the Germans nor the Austrians were smiley or cheerful, but from what I've experienced, Austrians were not only cold but also a bit rude. Guess people vary a lot!

thats easy to explain... Austria, and specially Vienna, in the past has been a melting point of different cultures, where people from Hungary, Bohemia, Silesia, Slovenia, Croatia were citizen of one monarchy, thats where the tolerance and patience is coming from I think. Today the Country it self highly depends on tourism, and many Austrian people had to get used to interact with foreign people, and treat them as guests... Munich in Bavaria is just the biggest village in Germany, all Bavarian people are peasants, and in Vienna we also think, they all are related by blood... like in all mountain villages in the world, people keep to themselves and incest is normal there... ;) yeah that last part was a joke, but I dont worry to much, since Bavarian people, dont understand any english... This is explains so much! I lived in Bavaria twice growing up. I can see now that I used words that were also more common in Austria. I didn't know that at the time because I was just saying expressions that my friends were teaching me. This is such a great video!

@Mello Lieb Die Deutschen wissen auch nicht was das heißt. Bayern ist eine Kolonie Österreichs, und genau so wenig wie Leute aus Schweiz Hochdeutsch schwer verstehen, gibt es dann auch vereinzelte die den Dialekt Schweizerdeutsch beherrschen und dann Hochdeutsch doch verstehen können. Pauschal kann man nicht Bayern auf ganz Deutschland verteilen und dann behaupten Deutschland ist Bayernland, also versteht Deutschland angeblich den österreichischen Dialekt. Das ist klarer Unfug.

Ja, die meisten österreichischen Mundarten sind Varianten der bayerischen Mundart. Nur die Vorarlberger sprechen eine alemannische Mundart, wie die Schwaben, Schweizer, und Elsässer. Die Grenze zwischen alemannischen und bayerischen Mundarten ist der Lech. Das musste ich in 1969 schnell lernen, weil ich damals bei einem Betrieb in Augsburg arbeitete. Obwohl Augsbug in Bayern ist, liegt die Stadt westlich des Lechs. In Augsburg spricht man Schwäbisch.

Das hat mir wirklich Spass gemacht! Sehr sehr interessant!

Als Deutscher muss ich gestehen, ich liebe den österreichischen Dialekt ! So sweet

Same here in Italy, for historical reasons we’re all schooled to learn the Italian standard language (which is originally the Florentine dialect) but we all speak our own dialects (which are the languages that used to be official before the 1861 Italian unification). So each of us is born a native speaker of Venetian, Genovese, Sicilian and so on.

The first time I visited my second cousin in Bologna, he and his family spoke in the dialect when they didn't want me to understand what they were saying. I could understand a word here and there, but not enough to know what they were saying. I could understand standard Italian well when they spoke slowly.

It is funny how much was Slovak that my grandparents used influenced by Austrian German... for example they called potatoes "erteple" which is erdäpfel pronounced with super thick accent, they also greeted their friends with "servus" and used many more Germanisms or better said "Austrianisms" I picked up just by listening to this despite not actually speaking German :)

Als Kärntner würden wir sogar "duatn" sagen. Außerdem wird bei allen Wörtern mit "hin-", wie hinein, das hin entfernt und am Ende ein "-e" hinzugefügt (in dem Fall eine) und bei den Wörtern mit "her-", also zB herunter, das her entfernt und ein "-a" angehängt (in dem Fall oba).

Was mich als Österreicher immer wieder fasziniert ist, dass Deutsche nichts mit "es geht sich (nicht) aus" anfangen können. Es ist ziemlich genial, denn es beschreibt je nach Situation und Kontext ob etwas in der vorgegebenen Zeit machbar (oder nicht machbar) ist (Bsp: "Wir müssen bis morgen 50 Seiten lernen...das geht sich einfach nicht aus"), etwas räumlich passend ist ("Die Garage ist ziemlich klein…ich weiß nicht ob sich der Lieferwagen da ausgeht"), eine Menge ausreicht ("Die Milch ist fast leer, aber ein Kakao geht sich noch aus") oder (seltener) ob eine Aussage vertretbar ist ("Ich finde Frauen gehören an den Herd" - "Sorry, he, da brauchen wir garnicht weiter reden, das geht sich einfach nicht aus.")

Palatschinke aus (palačinka), Sliwowitz (slivovice), andere Wörter wie Buchtel (buchta), Kren (křen) sind auch fast gleich

"Erdäpfel" is translated exactly the same way in French ! We also say "pomme de terre" which means "apple of the earth" :)

yeah we in austria(at least in vienna) have a lot of french words or words directly translated from french. I think its because the habsburgs had a pretty good realationship with france until marie antoinette said y’all should eat cake if you don’t have bread edit: idk if germany is the same but we have to learn either french or latin(sometimes both) as a 3rd and 4th language in school

Deutsche be like: Österreicher: „Das geht sich nicht aus, sorry.“ Deutscher: „Hä? Was meinst du? Was geht nicht aus?“ Österreicher: „Na!! Das geht sich nun a‘ moi ned a os!“

@@Josef_Eh Ja, aber doch komplex, da der Ausspruch situationsabhängig etwas unterschiedliche Bedeutungen hat. Er bedeutet aber IMMER, dass etwas "nicht klappt", oder es "nicht langt". Beispiele: Ein 100cm langer Tisch in einer 90cm langen Mauer-Niesche, geht sich nicht aus. Eine quirlige, aktive Frau mit einem ruhigen, faden Mann - das geht sich nicht aus. Ich habe diesen Monat kaum noch Geld, der Urlaub geht sich nicht mehr aus. usw.

here in Italy we have the same sack/bag (sackerl / tute) thing. in the north we say sack (sacchetto), in the south they say bag (borsa). In the north bag (borsa) is more used for luggage

Ein Gruss aus Spanien. So unterhaltsame und amüsirende Deutschkurse hört man immer wieder sehr gern, auch als Erwachsener.

Ich komme aus Deutschland und habe kein Schimmer, warum mir das empfohlen wurde. Ich finde eure Übersetzung aber Toll. Insbesondere, dass ihr Redewendungen (Das kommt mir nicht in die Tüte) einmal wörtlich und einmal sinnbildlich erklärt, so dass der Witz deutlich wird :) und österreichisch ist einfach eine schöne Sprache :)

4:45 -- Das mit den Karotten ist interessant. Wenn ich mich richtig erinnere, ist das Wort "Karotte" durch den Sprachgebrauch des kaiserlichen Hofes über das Italienische im Osten Österreichs angekommen. Das ursprünglichere Wort wäre "Murke", und das ist etymologisch gleich zur Möhre. So weit ich mich erinnere, stammt diese Erklärung aus dem dtv-Atlas "Deutsche Sprache". Ich bitte um Korrektur, falls ich falsch liege. Danke :)

Your video helped to explain my troubles while travelling in Europe. I'm born Australian with Salzburg/Austrian parents and I really struggled with communication in Germany. It wasn't until I got no more than 60km from parents' home area that I could understand people with a bit more ease. It was I real problem for me (my german is not so good). I don't think Germanic speaking people realise how very different you all sound - you drive only one hour down the road and you are already in another world - amazing!!!

You might not read this after two years but... we know. My mother lives in a village not far from vienna where I live (About 30 minutes by train I think.) but when I am there I sometimes have to ask what something means when talking to someone living there. And when I was in bavaria near nuremberg I sat in a bakery, eating my "Brötchen", drinking my coffee, listening to people ordering stuff.. They sound so cute. Even though they too speak a bavarian dialect (duh) the way the pronounce the words is just cute. :3 Another example for just knowing is that we have mandatory military service for young men (Except those who, in my personal opinion, are not real men and decide to do civil service instead.) and I for example was stationed in Burgenland (South of vienna) with comrades from vienna, Burgenland, styria, upper and lower austria. So we basically get a mandatory taste of different austrian dialects in everyday life. Also it is not uncommon for people from other states to move to vienna so we also hear the farthers austrian dialects which are from Vorarlberg (the state bordering the swiss.) who do not speak a bavarian but alemanic dialect. They basically speak swiss german. No chance of understanding them.

great video, keep it up! There is a small mistake in the subtitles at 5:14. "Des passad" does not translate into "das passt halt", but "passad" is the Austrian/Bavarian form of the Konjunktiv II (Future), i.e. "das würde passen." This is another difference to High German, you can form the Konjunktiv II by adding "ad". I sagad (Ich würde sagen), I machad (ich würde machen) etc. Keep up the good work, you guys are great and I think it's really cool you do special episodes on the different German dialects.

exactly the opposite thing happened to me! :D I moved to Berlin from Bratislava (Preßburg). Prior to that, my german language interactions were mostly Vienna-centric. On one of my first days here I asked in a Friedrichshain (much less gentrified at the time) Kaisers supermaket (which sadly does not exist any more) for a Sackerl. all the cashiers nearby and fellow Friedrichshainer in the queue looked at me with their wtf?!/amused faces and I had the feeling that the scene has completely frozen and you could hear the pin drop for couple of painfully long moments.

Hi, ich finde deine/eure Videos echt klasse! Mir fällt nur eben einiges gerade zu diesem Thema ein. Ich bin selbst seit 12 Jahren Berliner aber aufgewachsen in München. Meine Kritik ist, dass einiges doch sehr relativ ist und stark von der Region und vielleicht auch den persönlichen Erfahrungen abhängt. Ich würde schätzen, dass rund ein viertel der Deutschen König mit g und nicht mit ch beendet, manche sagen auch sch. Ähnlich wie China, Kina oder Schina. Da fühlt man sich als Bayer doch etwas ausgeschlossen, lol, wir sind schon auch Deutsche. Und bevor jetzt jemand mit Hochdeutsch daherkommt, wir reden hier ja grundsätzlich von Dialekten... Kulturell sind Bayern den Österreichern (insbesondere den Tirolern) aber tatsächlich in vielem näher als dem Norden Deutschlands. Das mit der Freundlichkeit würde ich in der Tendenz unterschreiben, aber der Unterschied ist, denke ich, nicht so gross wie es im Video rüberkommt. Grad die Wiener können schon auch richtig 'grantig' sein ;) ...

"Der Erdäpfel", wie wir in Frankreich sagen : "pomme de terre". "pomme" : Apfel ; "de" : von ; "terre" : Erde. 😀

Oder "Krumpern" (österreichischer Dialekt, aber auch in manchen Regionen Deutschlands: "Ihr Kinner sin gedillig, haut gibtet Krumpern un Millech."). Wird in Österreich nur mehr selten verwendet, wie auch das Wort "Ananas" für "Erdbeere"). Kommt von "Grundbirne" ("poire de terrain"?). Hat es verballhornt ins Slawische geschafft - "krumpira"!

Das Wort Paradeiser kommt von paradeis vormals paradies.. Weil sie so rot und süß sind, wie die verbotene Frucht (und tatsächlich sind Paradeiser ja Früchte, also tatsächlich Obst und kein Gemüse) im Garten Eden.

tolles video, und mir gefällt immer wenn Mathias in Video ist.

Als Amerikaner der in Österreich lebt, war dieses Video für mich sehr hilfreich. Die Meisten Leute in meine Umgebung reden genau wie Matthias und es ist oft sehr schwierig mit denen zu kommunizieren. Natürlich möchte ich immer auf hochdeutsch unterhalten, aber das ist nicht einfach wenn alle Wörter wie "aufi", "obi" usw benützen.

@GAgaV8 That's strange. I now live in the centre of Baden-Württemberg, so nowhere near Bavaria nor Austria, and most of the people here welcome you with "Servus", no matter what age.

This American expat in Salzburg ... kann nur zustimmen! Both parties explained and pronounced their differences very clearly. I wish I had had videos like these to watch back when I was still learning German. But I've been here long enough now that I just grin and embrace both "styles"!

This is fascinating because as a native Yiddish speaker a lot of the Austrian pronunciations are also in Yiddish. Der deitsch, dos mol (das Mal), hayor (heuer) and das Broetchen in Yiddish is a Semele or seml.

I'm just trying to learn Yiddish, but that stood out for me too, especially hier und da vs då und dort. And that -l for -chen (Cari also says Mädl for Mädchen on occasion).

Fun fact you might be interested in: the word "heuer" for "this year" does not exist in German German. It's exclusively an Austrian German word.

in austrian german we have a lot of yiddish french and slavic words that are germanized i think its because of the habsburg dynasty

Matthias is a very friendly and pleasant guy! So, in Austria, they pronounce "Krank" like a French person would with the nasal sound "an"... and also, what is very interesting is that in Austria, they say "da" whether they mean "da" or "hier", exactly the same way as we do in France even though the word "ici" (hier) exists in French, more often than not, we say "là" (da) whether we mean "ici" or "là"!
