diesel engines normally run on glow plugs in place of a spark plug unless its a cummins, they use a grid heater to heat the air going into the expansion chamber to cause combustion. its pretty neat stuff

Yes, It makes a wider print in the sand, but also a much longer area of the tire is in contact with the ground. Much like little tracks, the lower you can go with out one coming off the better.

I'm not an off road kind of person but that looks fun as hell, lol.

and the glow plugs or grid heater are only used at startup when the engine is cold, they don't run on either, if the engine temp is warm they are not needed at all for combustion to take place

Diesels only start on the glow plugs they do NOT " run on glow plugs " The GP only preheat the combustion chamber. Also modern direct injected (DI) no longer use a fuel preheat chamber for combustion. That was Indirect injection (IDI). The preheating of the fuel is why old diesels are so much louder than the new DI's. It also lowers emissions, makes more power and produces less smoke.

The thing is these trucks are fast. Try to get 7500+ pounds moving like that (with not a whole lot of weight over the rear wheels) on a stock diesel. I went out there last year with my buddy and his 95' F150 sitting on 35's with a 351w and they smoked us (literally). These trucks are no joke.

Yes, a special package available in 1998 only.

@MrElroy1029 Yes, you let most of the air out to give the tire a bigger footprint for traction in the sand. Otherwise you would just spin down and get stuck.

Actually, it's probably because since the rear tires are bigger in diameter, the front tires are being pushed... Unless, he has different gear ratios on the 2 diffs making the front diff higher geared... Probably even 10% higher geared would make a big handling difference, especially when not at full throttle
