Diesel heater on Ethanol / BioEthanol and Methylated Spirits

Still hasn't exploded. More fuels that will work and will work better with some tweaking.

Hello I'm from Brazil. It's unthinkable to imagine someone here burning a diesel heater. But due to the high price of electricity here, I bought one for testing. My city is very cold in winter. (Curitiba -PR) And now in the summer, I'm using it to feed a clothes dryer with hot air. And I'm absolutely loving it! We are the first country to use fuel alcohol for vehicles on a large scale, from the 80's until today. So this video will be interesting!

BTW, ethanol fuel will be very expensive in the UK since they do not produce a lot of corn there. In the USA it is next to impossible to find gasoline without ethanol added. They have a massive production system for ethanol that they add to gasoline. If your quite savvy you can make your own corn squeezin's and use it for personal drinking or adding to your ride. Corn squeezin's is also known as Moonshine. Ya don't need no fuckin heater when you consume the squeezin's, it'll keep ya quite warm in the winter!

So, I couldn't help myself and decided to see what my 2Kw Webasto airtop petrol burner would run on....other than petrol. So far it will run on Meths, White spirit and Diesel. Wasn't much heat output on meths...but White spirits was perfect. Started straight up from cold with a little puff of light smoke and with in seconds it was clear, gave really good heat output. I let it cool off for an hour and tried it again with diesel. Works as good or better than the white spirit or petrol! Started on the second try and ran clear for 20mins. All fuels ran with constant sustained ignition... no woosh woosh noises. Gave a bit of smoke on shut down on the diesel. All in all. It would seem the petrol / benzin version of the airtop will run on anything!

As pointed out by John mck47, that hole is important WHEN THE HEATER IS COLD AND IN START UP PHASE. The glow plug needs air to run across the mesh atomizer only during startup, and the 'fire' is beginning in the mesh/glow plug area. After the heat spreads to the rest of the chamber, the location of the fire can be moved slightly down and away from the glow plug, where the fan draws intake air from the other intake holes. But during startup, the vacuum draws enough air in from the single glow plug/mesh hole to get the process started.

Good to hear it'll run on Ethanol. I have basically access to an endless supply of Ethanol for 10 cent per litre which has some water inpurity (25-30%) in it which during covid times was used as desinfection and now is overstock. My E85 car works as well on it only doesn't start cold. It needs a squirt of brake cleaner to fire up and then it works

I have found that if the vent is plugged the heater struggles to start and causes screen around glow pin to get caked up and plug. Worked at a trucking company that had airtronics heaters in them. Drivers would bring them in for not turning on. Techs would find screen plugged and replace the screen but no one really noticed the vent hole and would just replace the screen. Truck would be back in few weeks for same issue. But if you cleaned the vent hole and replace screen truck wouldnt return. They added it to there in house troubleshooting steps.

For bioethanol to be viable we'd have to make it ourselves, but there the whole burn it or drink it issues lol. But seriously bread shops, donut places are happy to give them away. Pond weeds, certain varieties have great sugar content grown for free, but buying it or as we have it put in our fuel over here in the states is counter productive. I tried the highest ethanol blend in my vehicle and lost 25 percent mileage off of the regular 10 percent blend so the 💯 gas if your willing to pay the extra for it may be worth it.

David: great video, but thats not the kind of ethanol i was refering to. The ethanol i was talking about is called E85 and its straight out of the pump at the station. Its 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline/petrol and its cheaper than both pure diesel and gasoline/petrol. If youd like to try it out Id be happy to ship a couple of litres to your place. Regarding the Hole in the burner, i think thats for extra air, an inlet for atomizing the mixture thru the screen (there should be a screen/mesh inside the glowplug hole) on initial startup before everything start to rev up. The screen is removable with an M8 Bolt screwing it in and pulling the screen out, think corkscrew here.

  • @DavidMcLuckie

We don't get E85 here so I bought the closest I could get which was E100. If petrol works, and ethanol work then a mixture of the two will work. But you don't get anywhere near the heat from ethanol. Great for engines, not so great for heaters. :)

Negative. The fuel pump is not just for lifting fuel to a higher level, it is the only means the burner and controller have to precisely dose fuel to match demand and air/fuel ratio. It is also the only means of blocking fuel flow when it is off. Liken it to the fuel injector of an internal combustion engine.

As far as heater body orientation, I’m wondering if it should only be ran horizontally because of the bearings in the blower/motor... it would make sense that the cheap Chinese designers would use the cheapest bearings/motor available that fulfill their design needs and that there might only be sleeve a bearing in the back of the motor since the bronze surface would cost them a fraction of a ‘real’ bearing...

No more so than running on diesel. Once the pump stops, fuel stops and the fire goes out. But the heat that remains won't set it on fire but the heat may damage the circuit board.

I would be very concerned about the use of any alcohol based fuels because of it's negligible lubricity. I imagine the pump would experience pre-mature failure.

Add 2% high-grade 100% synthetic oil of high-viscosity; like 50-weight, in U.S. nomenclature. If that doesn't feel as slippery as diesel fuel when you rub it between your fingers, add a little bit at a time until it does. We always recommend Redline Oil first and foremost. You can even call the company and speak to an actual human being who is actually smart! (I've been an alcohol fuel instructor and researcher for decades.)

Low density fuel - advantage you use twice as much for the same bang = the fuel becomes a coolant helping to keep the engine cool due to the higher volume of nice cold fuel coming in to it.

I know it's good for engines for the reasons you stated. But I don't think it's great for running these heaters. You want a slow burning fuel to soak as much heat into the heatsink as possible.

@@petethompson1282 I live in Canada. Our heating oil (red diesel) is really just regular diesel, due to the cold. That what i run my tractor on, and also my 2k heater since it plumb on the same tank. And it almost 1/2 price. Same for ethanol. Here, they give the stuff away. They use it in cheap gasoline to lower the price. Since the heater are cheap and will burn anything. I would try 70%used motor oil / diesel ( black diesel) it would smoke but it exhaust outside. May need to run reg diesel at high to clean it once ever so often. That would make it pretty cheap to run
