Diesel Fuel Filter Replacement - Nissan Navara

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Replacing the diesel fuel filter on my 2013 Nissan Navara D40 with 2.5L Turbo Diesel YD25 engine. This filter was replaced as part of the 40 000km 'major' service. The procedure would probably be very similar for replacing the diesel filter on most other vehicles.

    Thanks for this...I saved a good deal of money by following your instructions as I replaced my fuel filter for the first time today...I would like to add a couple of suggestions however...rather than removing the line-in hose I purchased a fuel line clamp for a few bucks, these plastic plier-like tools ratchet up and seal the line totally without any damage. My second suggestion; pour the diesel from the removed filter into a clean container, return this fuel to the the new filter before installing, this will greatly ease the number of times you will need to operate the pump once you have the new filter in place...to fill an empty filter will take up to 40 pumps!!

    I own a '98 Nissan Presage with the same YD25 engine. Was occasionally getting a check engine when I push the car to go 60KPH. Checked the ECU and it says Code 77 Injection Timing. I thought the injections got shot but phew good thing it wasn't as it turns out that even thou the filter was still new and replaced it a year ago, some douche filled the car with dirty diesel so no wonder why it keeps checking engine. Replaced filter as it's very very dirty now for a still kinda new filter and voila that fixes the problem!

    Definitely sounds like it is under pressure, assuming the engine isn't running, I certainly wouldn't expect too much pressure in there. If it is on a car with electric fuel pump, you may find that the line is always pressurized, even when the engine isn't running.

I own an Hyundai load 2011 turbo diesel and has lack of power, works good when starting engine but then after few stops loose power so I have to turn the engine off then on and works good for a while and the like. few things has done so far: intake manifold cleaning vacuum valve replacement fuel filter replacement = here is my question, when I replace the fuel filter, in the step of priming , the fuel never came out , so I have to turn the engine on to see if the fuel could go up and it did , the engine automatically turned off, so I could prime it and took the air out of the line . my question is what happen when priming and the diesel doesn't come out? thanks mate

  • @successfulengineer

    @successfulengineer

    7 жыл бұрын

    Hi there, It can't hurt to change the fuel filter if it's due, but with your symptoms I would also look firstly at the vacuum lines on the turbo (they get hard with age and don't seal up properly) - If you can twist them on the fittings then they need replacement. And secondly there is a part called a suction-control-valve that commonly causes all kinds of gremlins in a lot of turbo diesel utes. But have a look at the vacuum hoses first, if your lucky it will be a $20 fix!

  • @successfulengineer

    @successfulengineer

    7 жыл бұрын

    Just to clarify, by vacuum lines I mean the very small tubes around the top of the turbo. They are used to control the angle of the vanes inside the turbo and thereby the boost.

  • @successfulengineer

    @successfulengineer

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the comment, diesel engines are always a bit rough, but if you are finding that yours is rougher than a similar one in a different car, there could be quite a few things to check. Would definitely depend on what kind of sound you are getting. Chirping sounds is usually from bearings/pulleys, the cam/fuel pump chain on some older D40s were not very good and can certainly cause a non-smooth sound. Might be worth getting a experienced mechanic to have a listen, could save you a fortune if the chain is about to snap.

    Perhaps this is a stupid question, but i like to be specific 1. I understand that the part that was replaced here was a FUEL FILTER. 2. given that the line is under pressure, to me... would suggest that there would have to be a fuel Pump 3.. i realize that the pump on the top pressurizes the line 4. I personally own a Nissan Navarra D-40 2010 4x4 dual Cab in the past i have owned cars that had the filter in the petrol tank I have 2 Questions 1. Does my navarra have a fuel filter in the tank that i need to replace 2. other than this part does my navarra have another Fuel pump elsewhere that i should consider replacing My issues is at times when im driving my car will just loose power (i'm in sydney) so... I'll be driving around 80km/h I'll roughly be at around 3000rpm or so i'll accelerate to overtake a car and car will not accelerate, the speed will then gradually drop to around 60km/h i'll notice the rpm to be around 1500rpm or so i will continue to try and accelerate without any luck I'm an engineer , but not Automotive I'm Electrical and Electronics and Computing and Telecommunications my assumption is my car is losing power because there is probably a lack of a precise mixture of diesel to air or something to do with the glow plugs because if the mixture is not correct it will not result in the correct release of force and hence no more acceleration is possible i doubt it's the Turbo because i am not seeing black smoke out the back of the car if i restart my car, once or twice, i can get the car to move again and work normally but.. the problem keeps happening every so often my guess is resistance in the fuel line either that or an E.F.I. related issue pertaining to the computer of the car ANY THOUGHTS oh... so.. is there a fuel pump located elsewhere in my car ?

  • @successfulengineer

    @successfulengineer

    7 жыл бұрын

    Hi Martin, Nice clear question. The diesel line is never pressurized, the only pressurized part is between the diesel pump and the diesel injectors, the line where this filter is replaced is under 'vacuum' because the pump on the engine 'sucks' the fuel through this line from the tank. The reason for the pump on top of the filter is to basically pump the whole line full of diesel to avoid air-locks. There are two parts you should look at first, that very commonly cause problems on most turbo-diesel utes, the first is a part called the SCV (suction control valve) - This is the part that controls the amount of pressure in the high pressure part of the fuel system, they fail all the time and are not too horrendously expensive. The second part is to check all the vacuum lines around the turbo, the VGT uses a vacuum controller to control the angle of the turbo vanes, the little vacuum lines get hard with age and temperature and stop sealing properly, making it hard for the computer to control the turbo. Have you tried one of the cheap OBDII Bluetooth scan tools to see if you can see anything funny happening with the boost pressure when you experience the problem ?

  • @martinkuliza

    @martinkuliza

    7 жыл бұрын

    Successful Engineer hehe, you read my mind with the scan tool, but before i get into that now first of.. thank you, i thought it best to be as clear as possible 2. re the pump on to of the filter.. YES i was aware that it was to use PRIME the line, meaning to get rid of the air in the line 3. now let me skip the middle bit for a second and go to the last paragraph. I own an Oscilloscope (Rigol DS2072A) which compared to something like a PicoScope is far superior in a lot of respects that matter , such as bandwidth, Resolution, Sample rate etc... but , as i've recently learned, not in all respects (i still have to test this though) I've also come to realize something pretty amazing most mechanics AS I'VE OBSERVED don't really understand what an oscilloscope is to begin with. Most (that i've spoken to and on you tube) but not all, do not understand how to interpret a waveform from what i've seen, they generally use software based scopes and that software has pre loaded (let's call them PROFILES) aka, pre recorded screenshots of something. these screenshots would have come from the manufacturer's engineer's BUT THE MECHANIC HIMSELF is merely just comparing pictures but doesn't understand what the waveform actually means, so if he is troubleshooting a misfire, and see's an abnormal result (aka different picture on the scope compared to the reference picture) he doesn't really know how to interpret the difference this concerns me with taking my car to a mechanic if they can't read a waveform... I'm fucked and i'll spend money while they play guessing games. SO..TO MY POINT yes.. i was indeed planning to use my scope, and if need be by an Automotive scope and definitely get a Scanning tool (i think they are around $200 - $300) now, here's another question should i go for OBD1 OBDII and i think there is an ODB III i think the difference is protocol .. is that correct so it would be a question of... which protocol serves my car best or should i buy 3 scanner's , one with each protocol. ok, now for the middle bit 4.because you said the fuel gets sucked FROM the tank TO the engine. this should mean that there is a pump either at the engine or at the tank.... right ? 5. thanks i'll look into the SCV 6. is there a pressure gauge of some sort that i can buy to test the pressure on the SCV and .. what is a normal reading (or what is IN SPEC) 7. i'll also look into the Turbo and VGT thanks for that really appreciate the comprehensive answer mate i think my first port of call is - I'll replace the fuel filter , as in this video - then , i'll find the Diesel pump (if you could let me know if that is in the tank or in the engine) - then i'll try and reproduce the problem which is intermittent at this point, if it's not rectified, it doesn't cause me to much loss, so i'm not fussed - i'll then work through it logically as per your advice thanks mate

    Successful Engineer hey mate, QUICK QUESTION if the Mechanics did a dodgy job (for arguments sake) on my service and keeping in mind the difference in Standard Engine Oil and Synthetic oil (and for my car it's 5W-30) if they put standard oil in, could that be the issue i don't think so, but i thought i'd ask I'm replacing the Oil Filter and the engine oil for Fully Synthetic compatible with DPF a service apparently costs me around $400 yet to buy synthetic and the filter is around $120.. so... not rocket science

  • @successfulengineer

    @successfulengineer

    Hey Martin, fuel filter replacement is a good first step, then at least you know that is eliminated. The diesel pump is mounted on the engine and chain driven, so pretty much a last resort, major job and very expensive, also not a very common failure. There is no diesel pump in the tank, only the one on the engine (you may hear sounds from the tank that sound like a pump sometimes, this is merely a one-way valve that allows air into the tank as the fuel cools). Check the vacuum lines around the turbo by twisting the pipes on the plastic barbs, if you can twist them relatively easily then they need replacing. The SCV is probably the most common failure, I think they are around $200 and I would just fit the replacement myself. For the scan tool, it may depend on whether you have a Thai or Spanish Navara, mine is the Thai and uses a very cheap ELM327 based Bluetooth OBDII adapter (I think around $12), you can use this to get a reasonable idea of what the boost level is, but I don't think you can check fuel pressure with it. With a bit of electronics knowledge, you could probably tap into the fuel rail pressure sensor and ADC / Log the voltage on that, you can then compare logs of when it is running well to logs when you experience the hesitation.

  • @successfulengineer

    @successfulengineer

    The only risk with using non DPF friendly oil is that you will pollute the DPF and probably shorten its life, but I don't think that would cause the problem you have experienced. Sudden loss of power almost always points to turbo or SCV issues. What year and how many kms ?
