    Fantastic sounds from those Anglo-Belgian Corporation engines. The turbos really start singing at 12:10, when full bollard pull is applied. The stern tug applies steering and braking force in both direct and indirect modes - this video is a great example of these towage modes. One question -are these Voith-Schneider drives? Superb video, thanks for letting us share your world for a job.

  • @CuthbertNibbles

    @CuthbertNibbles

    5 жыл бұрын

    The ship in this video has 29,767 horsepower, so 4 tugs like this one should be able to counter it. That being said, if the ship was already moving and the tugs tried to do anything about it, they'd probably just get flipped over, and if this was a tug-of-war from standstill, the tugs would have a huge advantage because their ducted thrusters are able to exert much more static thrust (per horsepower) than the propeller on the cargo ship, which is designed for optimal efficiency while at speed.

    +ShippingHarbors 8:27 you mention pulling to the port side. To clear a dock or something like that? 10:43 the engines rev up, were you slowing the ship? 11:20 looks like your tug is moving sideways? 12:25 you back up and throttle up. The video quality is great just feels like a little more "window dressing" would make it even nicer. Things like what the ship carries container, bulk etc. What lock you're coming from and what dock your going to, what's the name of the other tug. All these last things really don't mean much but it does make it more personable. Kinda like your showing a new person to that area and the job what is going on. Saw the start up video and the engine room is immaculate. I don't know anything about boats and the like but get along with machinery of most every kind very well and really appreciate what it takes to keep the 'coal burners' in such good shape.

  • @ShippingHarbors

    @ShippingHarbors

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Robert Palmore At 8:27 the ship comes out of the lock, and it needs to make a 90 degree turn to starboard because that were the destination is. So we pull the stern to port with an indirect manoeuvre (using the tug as a 'weight' forcing the stern to portside). The other 2 timesstamps are slowing the ship with indirect towing, but keeping the towingline nice in the middle of the ship so it only polls straight back and slowing the ship. The last manoeuvre is pulling to starboard in order to get the ship closer to it's berth. You can see people on the quay there ready to receive the mooring lines. I hope it's a bit more clear now :-) I'm not sure if my english is 100% correct.

    So the tugboat is steering the vessel from behind with the help of tension on the cable I recon? Why do these big ships need steering there? is it the low level of water?

  • @Andydamnbrain

    @Andydamnbrain

    3 жыл бұрын

    no, it is because the big vessel is unable to make sharp turns and manoeuvre to her berth place all by itself. such a ship isn t simply made for that, it is made to sail at sea, not to manoeuvre. that is why it needs one tug boat on the bow, to help her bow, and one tug boat at the stern, to help her stern. berthing a ship, is a matter of meters, sometimes, centimeters. with tug boats, a pilot or captain can accomplish that by giving instructions to them.

    It depends on allot of different factors. The location you want to work (harbor, river, sea, ocean). You need different papers for all of them. But I'm not sure which ones those are because I only work in the harbor-part which needs not as much papers as on the ocean for example.
