Die Loreley [German folk song][+English translation]

The song, written by Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) and set to music by Friedrich Silcher (1789-1860), sings about a legendary sorceress, who is waiting for her lover on the Loreley rock on the Rhine near Oberwesel, and distracts the boatmen with her singing, so that they hit the reefs and sink down. Some kind of german siren tale.

Ich weiß nicht, was soll es bedeuten,
dass ich so traurig bin;
ein Märchen aus alten Zeiten,
das kommt mir nicht aus dem Sinn.
Die Luft ist kühl und es dunkelt,
und ruhig fließt der Rhein;
der Gipfel des Berges funkelt
im Abendsonnenschein.
Die schönste Jungfrau sitzet
dort oben wunderbar;
ihr goldnes Geschmeide blitzet,
sie kämmt ihr goldenes Haar.
Sie kämmt es mit goldenem Kamme
und singt ein Lied dabei;
das hat eine wundersame,
gewaltige Melodei.
Den Schiffer im kleinen Schiffe
ergreift es mit wildem Weh;
er schaut nicht die Felsenriffe,
er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh.
Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen
am Ende Schiffer und Kahn;
und das hat mit ihrem Singen
die Loreley getan.

    Two years ago, I discovered this video and left a comment (see below), now I am here again, listening to this German folk song. The melody is hauntingly beautiful, and the revenging heart of a beautiful woman is chilling. Our life is a mixture of happiness and tragedies, you just have to accept it.

    I emigrated from Germany over 70 years ago, when I was a young boy. There is not very much German left in me, except some of the music, especially folk songs. This one tops the list of the ones that I often listen to when I'm alone. Thanks for downloading it.

    This piece is very special to me. When I was learning German back in school, our teacher, a former opera singer, loved to teach us with a few songs each day. Most abhorred it, however I love singing, particularly in choirs, so this was beloved by me. Anyway, there were some great songs that I learned then that have stayed with me all this time. However, of what we learned, Die Lorelei has remained dear in my heart. The absolutely melancholy beauty of the song is soothing, yet the actual subject matter is chilling. It's so haunting, yet eliicits no fear as I should. Much like the Lorelei herself. Perhaps, she is the singer of the song, luring me just as she has so many others looking for beauty in this world? There is just this deep power to this song, which I feel escaped the grasp of most of my peers, but there's a reason I come back to this piece every once in a while. I know this has probably rattled on for a bit, but this piece probably brings back the most memories of that time; this was when I was starting to see the true beauty in such art and more than just a pleasant melody and moving mood. Thank you, Herr Doctor, so much. Only the Kaiserhymn brings such joy as this.

    The subject matter may be chilling, but I think the legend was really invented as an excuse: the _location_ actually exists - it's an awkward bend in the river, with rocks and so on, and river craft _have_ been known to come to grief there; "I was distracted by the singing of the Lorelei …"

Just come back. You won’t be able to return if you go any further. I’ll take him, so, damn, I have to remember her name, but my head’s turned stupid, and the important name is… -------Then I’ll show you a miracle. It’s an application of the magic I showed you earlier, but this one’s amazing. This is the sorcery everyone wanted to see, after all. “____ a.” No, I don’t need to see it. Just come back. I… -------But the container’s a bit cheap. I can’t completely reproduce it using only my own body, but it’s all right. You’ll be back in no time if you and Rin keep trying. “____ a……!” She goes to the center. The person in white becomes the sacrifice, just like in the first ritual to close the Great Holy Grail. -------Goodbye. We aren’t related by blood. But I’m glad we were siblings. “____” ya. If that’s how you feel, then don’t go. I can’t sacrifice you. I said we’d live together to make up for all the time you’ve lived alone. But-------if one of us has to be sacrificed, then------- -------No. You said an older brother protects his younger sister, right? …Yeah. I’m the older sister. So I have to protect my younger brother. “I____llya.” I remember. Her name. Kiritsugu’s real blood relative. The girl who was left alone because I came and stole him. A girl with silver hair and red eyes that’s a bit older than me------- “Illya-------Illya, Illya, Illya, Illya, Illya, Illya, Illya, Illya-------!!!” I can’t reach her. I don’t hear voices any more. I can’t see anything in this light. And at the last moment. She smiles goodbye and shuts the gate of the Great Holy Grail.

(was Feuer in litauischer Sprache bedeutet).

    “As usual when Germans are in a good mood, ‘Loreley’ and other such tragic songs are the favorites” - Lieutenant Helmuth Von Mücke ‘The Emden-Ayesha Adventure’. There’s something special about being able to read a reference to a song in a book from 1915, and then listen to it right then and there. 110 years ago he was listening to the same song.

    It's not a folk song. The words, written in 1824 by Heinrich Heine, were set to this lovely melody in 1837 by composer Friedrich Silcher. They both deserve to be credited.
