It also shows the hypocrisy of the guests at the restaurant. Its similar to how in 'The Dark Knight' the Joker says he doesn't like to plan because he "hates schemers" then in the boat scene he reads his monologue from a notebook. Both films highlight the hypocrisy of antagonists who judge others wrongly.

It's also an early indicator that she's not his girlfriend, but his "date". She responds with something to the effect of "Whatever, you're the one paying!". We are meant to assume at first that she means that in a "Fine you're the one paying for the date" sort of sense, but after the reveal we realize he's not just paying for the dinner... he's paying HER to be his date, too. And wants everything 'perfect' in his own little weird ways.

Nah. He had that notebook because... he's the Joker. That was the joke. The only spit of truth in that monolog was him saying he chases cars like a dog and doesnt know what to do if he caught it. Which calls back to Alfred's story about the Jewl thief not looking for anything logical and some men just want to watch the world burn. Imo. Cool line, but too extreme. Joker is a force of nature. He stops once he's "caught the car" then when things have calmed enough or Batman is active, his games start over again.

Smoking cigarettes and even vaping can cause you to lose taste. Like 70% of taste is gone meaning you can only taste your food at the minimum of 30%. When you quit smoking like up to a month, your taste starts to come back. I’ve been smoking for years. I can’t taste a lot of my food. I’m a great cook but I can’t enjoy the same meal as my family members can. I have tried to quit several times, and I am looking into getting hypnotized for it.

I'd like to point out that many of the best critics and chefs in history have been smokers. As a chef and habitual smoker myself, I'd say it more or less dulls the pallet rather than completely ruin it. Also, it's kind of an old myth in the cooking world but if you smoke a cigarette 2 hours before a meal (if you're not a regular smoker) it apparently can actually enhance the flavors. I don't buy into it, but it's what Anthony Bourdain said.

At the same time, how something tastes is subjective to the person that tastes it. It doesn't matter if they're a smoker or not, how they perceive taste is how they perceive taste and we can't change that. So what, you're telling me that all smokers should be banned from being food critics? Yeah, no. On top of that, food critics look for more than just taste, they're also looking for texture, consistency, color, aroma, and many, many other notes. The food can taste good, but if it looks like crap, the critic is still going to judge it as such.

It’s not super accurate though Taste buds are not evenly distributed throughout the human species. Some people have way more than others. Someone who has a lot of taste buds & smokes, can still have a much more sensitive palate than someone with less taste buds who doesn’t smoke

Kinda funny how Tyler is like “Don’t smoke, it will ruin your taste” when smoking is of the number 1 methods in the food industry to reduce stress (same with health care). I think this was how Chef was able to tell that Margot was also part of the service industry like him, he definitely knew someone who smoked in his field (if he hadn’t taken up a cigarette himself).

@@gustave7619 yeah he clearly said he smokes regularly. You wont notice any changes to your senses the same way you wont notice your nails yellowing because it all happens little by little. But as most quitters can attest after being heavy smokers when the senses come back you realize youd been affected all along.

It's not about the smoking hurting your palette. It's about how pretentious the rich and the elites can be. Slowik used to cook greasy burgers and for him that's what's worth for all these fiascos. An unhealthy but savoury burger. But the critics would go far and beyond to insult food as if hunger and starvation doesn't exist in the world because they live in their own bubble. Besides, in the end they all smoked together till the end of their lives.

It's a breakdown of how professional kitchens are what takes the joy out of cooking. I am, in my opinion and the opinion of those I have cooked for, a good home chef, but I could NEVER work in a professional kitchen. I love cooking too much to turn it into a job. It's something I enjoy, not something I want to stress put about. Burnt and The Menu opened my eyes to that.

But Margot had NO IDEA about what the Chef was planning!!! She was a flipping escort that Tyler paid to go with him to the island to attend the event. Tyler had just recently broken up with his girlfriend, whom the Chef was expecting to come with dipshit. Tyler was also aware that he needed a date to just get in to the restaurant: No loners, so to speak. Margot was a desperate move on his part to still be able to get on that island. You see, the people there, about 99% of them, were expected to be there. Margot was an unpleasant and nasty surprise for the Chef and his staff. Not to mention: Tyler knew the whole damn time what was going to happen that night. And he was the only diner privileged to know about it. I don't know if you've seen "The Menu" but definitely watch it. It's wild. One moment you'll be laughing, then jumping in your seat, to yelling out in surprise and screaming in disgust and fear. This movie will screw around with your mind and emotions, you're gonna start question your own sanity at the end of this flick. And I'm not joking. As much as I enjoyed "The Menu" I needed a mental health break. Ye Gods!!!
