It's a fish farm that's come adrift. They're usually in bays and estuaries and used to farm fish (things like tuna, salmon, etc). When they're in operation, they have purse nets underneath - however these are removed for maintenance, or when the farm is not in use. What looks to have happened here is that a farm has come adrift from it's moorings. They're really common throughout aquaculture.

Thanks a ton for posting your comment. At 1st I _honestly_ thought this was a trampoline cage they'd found way out in the ocean! 😂 On a more serious note, is there a way to find out if this fish farm contains netting, mesh or something that could/ will harm the wild fish in area? What the heck would a person do if they happened upon something like this, call the coast guard? I'm pretty certain that the owners would like it back, IF they knew where to it was, right? 😣

On one hand we have issues with bycatch and bottom destruction (and in the case of lobstering, whale entanglement) but we also don't want fish farms because of domesticated fish escaping, and the waste from the pens. And the loudest people are the ones that know the least about the environment and the industry!
