I sense that both you and I were those quiet kids in class that would love to read a lot of books! I read somewhere that after Baron von Humboldt successfully left the gold fields around eureka, Humboldt Bay California, he went to Sierra county and dug a mine on pliocene ridge, I rode my mountain bike to that mine it is so freaking deep in the forest canyon of the Middle fork Yuba River. When the baron had amassed yet, another Fortune, the German Kaiser sent an armored wagon pulled by armored horses accompanied by 16 pikemen on foot, and 10 long rifle guards . Fortune and roll that fortune back to the barge to San Francisco and back to Germany. Another fascinating California Gold Rush story is the guy, sorry I forgot his name, but he made a fortune in gold at bidwell's bar on the North Yuba River, and he stashed his gold in three or four places and then forgot where he put it! Some of these caches were later found by happenstance. $40,000 worth of gold found in a chimney by some masons doing repair
