Did the Terrarium Computer Desk Survive? (1 Year Update)

In this one, we do a much needed one year update of the terrarium computer desk. I went through the comments of the original video the other day and was surprised by how many skeptics there were regarding the longevity of this piece. I put a lot of thought into how I designed this and I thoroughly enjoy it. Let me know what you think of the progress down in the comments!

If you spray the inside of the glass with a layer of hydrophobic coating then you won't ever get any condensation even without ventilation, so you don't need holes or watering. I suggest putting a hydrophobic coating on the inside surfaces of any aquarium or terrarium glass. The water vapor will always condense in midair into fog and rain back down into the tank without touching the walls or ceiling.

An alternative I thought of, which would provide lots of ventilation (meaning you need to water it more often) is he could have had a screen or mesh vent along the front side. You wouldn't see it if it's on the front because of where you're sitting, but like I said, it would cause lots of water loss. I still prefer the holes, but a vent is a possible option.

I have a pretty minimalistic set up in my 29 gallon cube and it cost around 1,000 to set it up, but with matenince I would estimate I’ve spent easily around 7,000-8,000 dollars. It also takes time and paceience because there will be a time ranging from a few months to a full year where you couldn’t keep anything but fish even if you dose the tank with bennifical bacteria. I would love to see one but they take a lot of time, effort, and money which is what I meant in my first comment.

While cool I think a dry desert scape with some succulents and cactus would be much better suited for such a desk setup. 1) the desert / sandy substrate is much brighter in color and offer significant better contrast than the dark floor here 2) it’s dry not humid, meaning glass will be 100% clear and no humidity issues to deal with 3) colorful cactus and succulents look nicer (personal opinion) in a top down view vs forest floor look.
