Former airline pilot here. When we used our autopilot, the ‚real‘ one, we were always trained to intervene when things started to go sideways. Not even commercial airliner’s autpilots are 100% reliable. I had an approach into Lagos, Nigeria, where it locked onto a false localizer. I had to disconnect, correct and reingage. Sensors can fail, ground equipment too. It is clear that as long as there are controls in the airplane or car, you are best advised to remain vigilant. And this thing in the airplane is called autopilot yet nobody complained…

I live in a heavily industrialised area where traffic is heavy so you never know when you're gonna need to go below 70 on the motorway. I don't like the auto barns if that's how you say it in the rest of Europe - they drive too fast in my opinion. Autopilot on an airplane isn't fully autonomous either. It's more like cruise control and lane keeping assist. It will maintain your airspeed, altitude and heading, and coordinate your rudder movements when necessary to make a turn, but it still requires the pilot's action to communicate with air traffic control, and man the process of taking off and landing. It still also requires the pilot's action to find the right lane in the sky, as it will not avoid obstacles for you.

I will never buy a car that doesn’t have what Tesla currently has. Autopilot is incredible. FSD is amazing. I use it daily and it does 99% of my driving. It’s much safer than human pilot. I drop an address destination and chill. I don’t have to worry about missing a turn or an off-ramp or what lane I need to be in or using a phone for navigation. Nothing. I supervise and it delivers me to my destination. It’s especially great in places like Los Angeles for example. Stress free transportation.

Dr.Grande hit the nail on the head in this video. I am a trained accident investigator. Car drivers never have to get additional training once they obtain their drivers license. Maybe some mandatory refresher training could curtail bad habits developed over the years. Pilots and most bus and coach operators get annual training. It is a reason they are safer than the average driver. In this video, we see the result of a lack of critical thinking, not a defective car. The holes in the Swiss 🧀 cheese lined up in this event. Background: I have owned EV’s (not Tesla) and my car has very limited “auto pilot” tech. I can take my hands off the wheel on a freeway, for a limited time, and it will stay in the lane. I have been a passenger in a Waymo robotaxi, and it performed as expected for the 52 minute trip of 22 miles.

We used to use Teslas at work for deliveries until they were phased out because of how insanely dangerous the auto drive system was. The owner bought them for the auto drive system, but it would routinely do the worst possible thing at the worst possible time and it was hell trying to get Tesla to accept any responsibility for the crash that we had while one of thedrivers was using it because they expected it to break on its own because that’s what it’s marketed to do Edit: interesting fun fact, we had to go for an orientation about how to exit the Tesla in case of an emergency because if your battery bursts into flames, the car will lock you inside and the emergency exit switch is behind the speaker casing which you have to rip out with your fingernails.

We bought a automatic honda and it SUCKED, dead at 100,000 miles - off to the junkyard for parts. I'm going to quit driving when I can't find a manual transmission car to drive. Automatic cars are so boring to drive. I also hate the huge infotainement center they put in new cars, no way I'm driving a car without HVAC knobs - I'll have to pull over to the side of the road every time I want to change the heat, AC or blower.

I’m a longtime Tesla owner (4+ years) and a novice FSD (4+ months). In my experience, Autopilot and/or FSD will disengage every time the driver applies brakes, throttle, or steering input. That is to say, whenever the driver overrides the Autopilot or FSD, the car quits driving itself. All the driver had to do to run into that tree was to touch ANY of the controls mentioned. And likely, that’s what he did.

OH GOD. The doors of some models of tesla cannot be opened when the car is disabled. The doors are electric. They have an override but in an emergency they can be hard to operate. Not really relevant here but in the backseat its really bad if you have not been briefed on how to use it. Not intuitive at all. You have to open a panel and pull the internal door wire. In the drivers seat there is an actual handle but it is in weird place and since you do not use it I can imagine getting a wreck and fire would make it hard to remember where it is and that you have to use it.

My analysis is that the Model 3 was shamed and demonized as a child, giving it very low self esteem and self worth, maybe causing the obvious Vulnerable Narcissism. The Model 3, maybe stemming from the low self esteem, showed signs of depression too, as well as very pronounced Grandiose delusions, even claiming to have met the Archangel Michael, making me speculate that it had Schizoaffective disorder, This is just an analysis, not a diagnosis

I absolutely agree with Dr. Grande's perspective on this subject. Pilots have to be on top of their game mentally, emotionally, and physically many hours before take off. For example, they are not allowed to fly under the influence. So, no one should drink alcohol and drive. It is interesting that there was no black box flight and audio recordings installed in the vehicle comparable to those in aircraft, which can sustain great impacts and fires, yet continue to provide proof of what actually happened during the incident. RIP Hans. Maybe the mistake you made in trusting this technology to get you and your friend home safely after you two had been drinking for some time will be a lesson learned to prevent other such accidents.

I believe that he was just riding along with no thought about the road ahead, it was late and in a careless way he disenngaged the automatic driving, he was impaired so its likely to believe he tried to engage the automatic driving again instead of stopping as fast as possible, so he was looking inside of the car, didnt see the road turning nor the tree up ahead. The "ohhh blank" was probably in reference to him disengaging the full self drive.
