Did Tampa do the right thing with Stamkos and Hedman?| OverDrive - Hour 1 - 07/01/2024

Ойын-сауық

Bryan Hayes, Frank Corrado and Jason Strudwick discuss how teams and fans are feeling a day after free agency opened, how the Canadian markets are feeling about their start to the offseason and the importance of drafting and developing within your organization. The boys are joined by LightningInsider.com’s Erik Erlendsson to discuss the reaction after the Tampa Bay Lightning did not extend captain Steven Stamkos and if there were any potential signs that this was a possibility, how GM Julien BriseBois came to the decision, if the decision on Steven Stamkos impacted Victor Hedman’s negotiating tactics when signing his extension with the Lightning and more. They also chat about the Warriors decision not to bring back Klay Thompson and who should hold a bigger grudge against their former team, Thompson or Stamkos.

No Eric. Kuch is the best player in Lightning history. The trade is better for the team. Sad to see Stammer go but business is business. Tampa gets better defensively and better 5v5. And younger. Win,win, win.

Though Gentzal now makes $9M vs reports that Stamkos would've taken $4.5 a year. So hypothetically could've kept Stamkos and his 40 goals and still had another $4.5 to spend, which could get you another pretty good player, so there's that.

Letting a good player like stammer walk even though he would've taken a friendly deal is crazy to me, yeah I get he's in the back 9 of his career but he can still score and he's a good leader, not to mention he has been with the bolts forever, dude has roots there. I got a feeling it's going to crush the Tampa dressing room and this is the start of the fall for them, sure sends a heck of a message to everyone else in the room.

Damn straight it's the end. Deservedly so. Absolute crap move to the biggest sports icon in Tampa area history. By the end of next year one or more of the remaining big pieces will demand a trade and that's it. Karma is a coming.

I did the same call for the Habs, about 3 years. They're good on goalies and prospect goalies. They're good on defense (albeit they're still young), and have good prospects on D. They needed a little more offense prospects, they good Hage and Demidov, while still having good offense prospects.

These guys are forgetting that Jake plays winger. Stammer plays center. He hardly ever played with Kuch and Point 5v5. Jake will play with Kuch and Point. Is there a better line in the NHL with those 3? Probably not. And Jake is used to playing with high end talent and espicially players who can make plays with eyes in the back of their head like Crosby. There are only three players with that kind of generational hockey iq in the NHL right now. And Kuch is one of them.

When he's still a top playoff performer and scored 40, and would've signed for $4.5 a year apparently, makes you wonder if they would've been a better team getting him at a price around there. And he really wanted to stay, and was their captain - kinda curious why Brisbois was so sour on him...

The Red Wings, Blackhawks, Kings, and Penguins all kept their core together too long. Tampa is ice cold in what they did, Stamkos should've been a Lightning lifer. But the salary cap makes guys entering their mid 30's an anchor. Nashville is trying to make a run. With Vegas, Vancouver, Edmonton, Dallas, and Colorado, it's going to be tough. Let's see if the Lightning have a resurgence and get out of the first round. Florida made them look old this past year.

For the bolts, Geekie is the key. If in 2 or 3 years hes another 80 plus point man then i guess they did good. As of today im not sure Stamkos and Sergachev for MacDonnaugh and Guentzel seems like lateral movement if not worse

The defense was horrible in Tampa. Sergachev going away is not helping at the short term, I agree but we get 2 picks back which was clearly needed from the horrible Jeannot trade and also 2 others from sending Jeannot to LA. We get Geekie a forward prospect who was 11 overall of the 2022 draft and JJ Moser, a 24 dman that was on the first pair in Arizona was only -5 even though the team was -18 and playing the best elements of the other teams. If you take Moser and McDonagh and take out Sergachev, it's probably worse for the offense, but you've strengthen the defensive side of your defense. Stamkos scored 40 goals last year yes, but scored 19 of these on the PP, Stamkos was a 20 goal scorer on 5 vs 5. He was becoming a little slower on the backcheck at a time when we needed to strengthen the defense. Guentzel is fast player who can create plays like Point and Kuch do. He's also a two-side player which is gonna help Tampa. Last year, the Lightning was 20 in the league at 5 vs 5 hockey. Tampa got in the playoffs only because of the PP. It was a easy task for Florida, stay away from the box and kill the Lightning PP when it materializes and all you have to do now is beat the 20th club in the NHL in 4 times out of 7 games... Guentzel will help to diversify the offense, bring more defensive responsibility and make it more productive at 5 on 5 at the expense of the PP I agree, but we still got Kuch, Hedman and Point. It's not like if these three were not able to run a PP. Also, it's been forever since Tampa had a young promising prospect to develop, can't wait to see how Geekie turns out for the Lightning because for 2015 to 2023, all the Lightning is trade picks in exchange of players to help you win championships. Now, it's time to renew the team and better start now to avoid the long never ending series of seasons at the bottom of the league that San Jose, Anaheim, Montreal, Ottawa, Buffalo are living right now.

31:23 Freudian slip, so appropriate for the garbage can GM move. 'This is where I give Julien a lot of credit' Somebody's singing for his continued access. 'This will eventually go away' No, it won't. Tom Seaver has a special paragraph in his wiki entry for the Midnight Massacre i.e. how the Mets totally disrespected and botched his time as Mr. Met and had to trade him in 1977. Nearly 50 years ago and it's still a thing. Bolts fans will never forget this. Ever.

Add Kuch to the mix and Jake should easily score 40 goals. Maybe more. Stammer was more of a powerplay specialist with 19 of his 40 goals on the powerplay coming from mainly Kuch. Jake isnt the scorer Stammer is though so some adjustments will have to be made on the PP.
