They got the STP from Scott's little art shrine thing he had made, there was am STP sticker in the middle of it. That stuck out to him and then they had to come up with what it meant. He tells the story in "Not dead and not for sale" book he wrote

I once went to a motorshow and there was a booth giving out STP stickers, I took a lot back home. Gave some to my friends who love the band. What a great moment 😁

Love this band

They were going to be Mighty Joe Young but a lawyer said a blues player had the name. They literally had Core with the artwork all ready to print as Mighty Joe Young, and had to spend extra time figuring out a name. They liked the STP logo and wanted fans to call them STP, so they searched for a name to fit that acronym. This is according to Dean.

Best band name. I do remember STP motor oil, too.

I think Scott Weiland said something about STP meant something about Shirley Temple's... may be he said that as a joke.

STP is not an acronym - it is an initialism because each letter is pronounced separately.

Chris the bassist from Nirvana said it best back in 92’ he said it was a wanna be Seattle band that took the name Stone from the guitarist from Pearl Jam and Temple from Temple of the dog … and pilots because Seattle was home to so many piltots and they made planes there. Haha. He was always pretty hilarous

Me and my friend in high school called them "Stoned tampon pirates" We laughed a lot about that

It's also a reference to Aliens. Meaning STONE TEMPLE= The pyramids and Stonehenge PILOTS= Alien Ship Pilots. Who flew the crafts.

STP is not an acronym!!! Words have meanings, and acronym specifically means initials that are pronounced as its own word, like AIDS or SCUBA or the Navy SEALs.

Every band name is cheesy. The Beatles, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Smashing Pumpkins, Korn, Lynyrd Skynyrd…..I’ve got hundreds more. It’s way better than Mighty Joe Young.
