    Black man here. I watched SNL as a kid. In my household SNL was on every Saturday night. It was basically tradition. My mom loved it when she was young, and by the time I could talk, I could recite "Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!!!) I remember when Norm was a newbie to the cast. Before him it was Kevin Nealon. Norm was different. VERY different. His style was something no one had really seen. His jokes were very direct. It wasn't politically correct. Which was (and always should be) a staple of comedy. I remember black jokes, gay jokes, jew jokes, sexist jokes, anti-religion, Basically if you had a race, preference or a belief system, Norm would come and shit on it. Not out of hate, but for comedy. It's a way to laugh at yourself and not take everything so personally or seriously. If you know anything about Norm, you would know for certain that the man was FAR from a racist. In fact part of his shtick was to expose racists. Listen to some of his interviews. Norm's style wasn't for everyone. But true fans of comedy know the man was a genius. R.I.P Norm. You Old Chunk of Coal. Angels can fly because they take themselves lightly. LIGHTEN UP PEOPLE

    Norm is/was one of the greatest comedians ever. He was a master at dancing on the edge of the "acceptability" sword. He also LOVED bombing. If the audience did not like a joke he told he would frequently lean into it even further. He was a student and great admirer of Dave Letterman. Check out Norms comedy and revel in the greatness. His interviews with Conan Obrien and Letterman were always top notch comedy.

    Norm is my favorite comedian ever, not just because of his comedy but just by how genuine the man was. Absolute legend. And gents, not only is their more great Norm MacDonald material out there, the is probably enough 'risky joke' material for a part two. Another one you could do is a compilation of his OJ Simpson jokes. His late-night appearances were all legendary as well. One of my favorite things about him is that he would intentionally get on stage with the sole intent to bomb all night, then go to the exit and personally tell all people in attendance 'good night, hope you enjoyed the show'. Who does that?!

  • @SDesWriter

    @SDesWriter

    I'd say do the Clinton jokes first....although since it is a commentary show run by black man the OJ thing might have a better hook. But either way, those were his favorite two subjects and he was absolutely savage about them. He lost his job due to them and his boss being pissed because he was friends with them. Norm refused to stop (probably amped it up) and he was gone. The show was never funny again.

    Norm gave zero effs, he purposely tried to piss off his networks. He was fired from SNL because the priducers told him not to make jokes about OJ Simpson, so he started making even more jokes about OJ Simpson until they fired him. The roast you were referring to where he was terrible, he took the check and purposely told the corniest jokes to get back at the networks who black balled him. Nearly every other comedian talks about how much Norm made them laugh which tells you something about him.

    The reason the guys on the podcast were dying laughing as soon as Norm mentioned Hucklberry Finn was because they all knew Norm was setting up a punch line. Him acting like he's talking about a serious topic is part of his humor and then last second he drops the punch line and makes you realize he was joking the entire time. That was his method so those who knew his style would burst outlaughing just from the setup... Was one of the amazing things about Norm.

    Norm's best black joke was one he read off his joke card at the end of Norm Macdonald Live Season 1 Episode 1 with guest Super Dave Osborne. It went: "some gold-plated chains would make a great retirement gift for a really really good slave" delivered in his dry wit. Killed me.

    Respect to you fellas for enjoying the jokes for what they are. Comedy is about crossing the lines and pushing the boundaries. I can say in my experience (which is obviously not the same as others), actual racist, are joking about other races, they say things with hate and it’s usually easy to pick up on. Norm was an absolute genius, hope you guys do more of his stuff.

    Mark Fermen was the head detective on the OJ’s murder case. He was taped using the N word. So he was joking about them lessening the charge to using the term darkie. He wasn’t racist, but we all could see he was guilty from the dna evidence of his blood at the murder scene, and bloody gloves were found at his house, as well as his and the victims blood in his bronco with a shovel and plastic or something. It was a televised trial. He made many jokes about it and was fired from SNL for it. Considering he got away with nearly cutting off his ex wife’s head and killing the waiter that had come over to drop off her sunglasses. So it was a really vile and violent act.
