Why do people try to use Jay's business success to negate his greatness as an MC? It's corny and it usually comes from dudes that wasn't outside to understand Jay's impact earlier on. Jay's joints resonated with the core of the culture BEFORE he became a mogul. He's dominated musically AND outside of the music. Face it, Jay smoked the game better than anyone who has ever came into this rap shit.

This is a very subjective topic. Nas is a true artist and an individual with his own style. He may not be everyone's cup of tea. Someone may not like the topics of his songs, production choices, or just see him as a boring rapper sometimes. And we can't blame them; this is music, and it is a matter of personal taste. For me, Nas is the GOAT. 100%. But I don't see any sense in this conversation, in general.

Nas is not in the debate with the rest of the hip hop greats anymore. Nas is in his own tier and should be mentioned amongst those within the actual genre of music period. It's not what he has done but also when he has done it. He is no question the Greatest Emcee Of All Time. Nobody in hip hop is gonna be able to catch him for quite a while. He was 100% in the conversation of GOAT when Magic came out. When KD3 came out it was official and now with Magic 2 he is simply showing off his title by staying outside and daring people to take it from him which nobody will. Nas is the best!

@@obeii1805 Eminem has no songs where he is personifying a gun, a roach, money, beef, Chicken a Prison Cell etc. Creatively Eminem has nothing like that. Eminem has no song where he literally tells a story backwards. Eminem has no songs like this. When Eminem came into the game and made Infinite he came in sounding like who?! That's right Nas and also AZ! Nas makes better albums. Nas has over 35 songs he has written that are stories and Nas has better production than Eminem and has tried various different sounding production which is something Eminem has not done. From Boom-Bap, Drill, Trap, Southern sounding Hip-Hop. Nas has tried it all and flowed on it all and flexed his skills sounding comfortable on everything in modern times. This is what makes him better than Eminem. It's not just about being lyrically sharp. This is not what makes a complete emcee. For example Canibus is more lyrically inclined than Nas wordplay wise but he can't make better songs or better albums and 2nd Round Knockout is one of the better diss songs but it's not enough against Nas. It's about ticking a lot of other boxes and those boxes I mentioned are why Nas is in his own tier. Ether is one of the most famous battle songs of all time where it's a verb in the dictionary. It's a classic battle rap song. It's also the first song that helped to make 'Stan' an actual verb in the dictionary it is today. No one used the word Stan as a verb before Nas did in Ether. Do your history and you will see. Whilst Eminem is a great battle rapper and is dangerous in the heat of battle, his battle songs aren't mentioned in a way where it completely shifts the culture. It doesn't have longevity. His battle songs aren't as impactful as Ether meaning that their quoted on that type of level over 20 years later. Eminem's battle songs are very in the moment songs. Even Remi Ma did a diss to Nicky Minaj and called it 'Shether' because of the actual impact of Ether which is only beaten by the impact of No Vaseline by Ice Cube where he took down NWA as a group. Nas stepped out of Hip-Hop and done an album with Damien Marley within the Reggae genre. These are different things that Nas has done to prove he is better than everybody including Eminem. As an overall Emcee that ticks all boxes from Classic albums, Classic songs, Longevity of songs, Longevity of albums. Eminem is not on Nas's level for the plethora of reasons I have given. Eminem in terms of album making can't touch Illmatic. What NY State Of Mind means to the culture can't be replicated. It's one of the perfect Hip-Hop songs. Life's A Bitch is better than any song Eminem and Royce could ever do together as a song. I am talking about longevity and this song still sounds amazing almost 30 years later. As good as Scary Movie and Bad Meets Evil, those songs will never be on the level of Life's A Bitch. Eminem will even tell you himself the impact of Illmatic on him as an emcee. Eminem will tell you in interviews. He has no album better than It Was Written. I am talking about actual songs. Nas makes better songs than Eminem. Do I think Eminem can rhyme? Of course he can and in terms of his impact I can't deny what he has done in the game because even Nas himself has utilised Eminem's The Way I Am flow on his song 'Ghetto Reporter' on KD3. So this is not me shitting on Eminem. I am not taking away his ability to be very skilled on the mic but objectively he isn't better than Nas. When we are talking about full complete bodies of work that has stood the test of time within the culture in the golden era AND making 5 albums in 3 years in today's time. Eminem has not done this. He hasn't fed his fans with 5 albums in 3 years. That's over 50 songs worth of material and none of those albums sound the same at all. That is absolutely legendary and the thing is Nas isn't done yet. Nas is still gonna be dropping at 50 years old. Nas is still in the ring, active and outside and on the evidence provided he left Eminem as an artist a long time ago. In terms of discography and Catalogue if there was a Versuz battle I truly feel Nas would beat Eminem in that category too because of how large his catalogue is in a 20 song Versuz against Eminem. He has too many options against Em. These are the reasons why Nas is better objectively. He has too many examples of the various ways that he uses his pen that Eminem has not done. On a technical level if we look at Double Entendres and Similes, Eminem use of them surpasses Nas so I can give you the areas where Eminem competes against Nas but this is not enough to make Eminem a better emcee. Winning one category of emceeing doesn't make him better because the songs have got to translate and stand the test of time and also album making is more important. It ultimately comes back to execution on songs and the various different topics you can cover to show your artistic range, arrangement of albums, the production. All these things matter and this is why Nas is the Greatest Emcee Of All Time. This is why he is not in a Hip-Hop conversations anymore because he is better than everybody now. He has made history with the greats like Michael Jackson, Prince, and Stevie Wonder in terms of longevity. I do not think he is better than those artists by the way but he is in the conversation for his amazing run that spans 3 decades. Eminem is not in that conversation. If I was to compare album sales I know Eminem will win but that's not what makes him the Greatest Emcee Of All Time. Creativity, Album Making, Influence, Classic Songs, Longevity of Albums are what do that. Nas has been in the game for 30 years. Longer if you include Live At The BBQ in 1991. He is the best and the evidence showcased in the Golden era of hip hop and the work he is doing today proves it!!!

Nothing Nas has dropped with HitBoy has been REMOTELY a 'classic' by Hip Hop standards. You guys are overblowing this mediocre run with him and HitBoy and it screams pandering and desperation. Nothing he's made with HitBoy is comparable to his early work.

Can we all just stop with babying Nas? I love the guy but c'mon. Nastradamus= weak, street's disciple =weak, hip hop is dead=weak, lost tapes 2=weak, nasir= weak, The 'N' album=weak (great lyricism but terrible production), Life Is Good= weak (very overrated album with more misses than songs that landed) QB Album=weak, KD1=weak, kd2= weak, magic2= terrible. Nas has A LOT of misses in his catalogue but he also has some of the GREATEST ALBUMS EVER MADE in his catalogue. He has more misses than his fans would be willing to admit. With that being said, you are right. You can't have a GOAT conversation without mentioning him. However his catalogue has a lot of holes in it.

@@hahaharvey3068 This comment is the epitome as to why Nas can never surpass Jay. People would rather hate Jay lol. Jay has a far superior more VERSATILE catalogue than Nas. Jay can take you to the clubs, the streets, give you story telling, get conscious, introspective, make fly shit for the women, he's wittier than Nas and just all around more of a dynamic MC. He's had FAR more meaningful collaborations (features) that have MOVED the culture as a whole. He can get into waaaaaay more cadence pockets than Nas at a much higher level (at least he has). Jay's versatility in his catalogue while still providing substance over the years is KILLING Nas and Nas is in my top 5. However there are LEVELS to this. It's the same reason I have Big over Nas. Big could make you laugh, cry, dance AND think. Nas essentially has 'one gear'. He's incredible but the Jay comparison's are out of pity to root for the 'underdog' not because you guys actually believe it.

Everyone has their own GOAT. Nas was mine before this run. But this run has more people saying so. That’s greatness. He’s still changing minds. That in itself is enough for me. And anyone who you called the GOAT that isn’t current has to be left out for the most part. FOR THE MOST PART. There’s at least one exception to that.

His catalogue just doesn't have the versatility of a Jay, Big or a Pac & Rakim is really the MC that advanced Rap. Nas is a fruit off of his and G Rap's tree. They are all more dynamic as MC's and just more universally interesting than Nas. Jay, BIG & Pac can all make the fly club/party, street shit, talk slick to girls and not look corny or out of place while still being introspective and conscious. Can't say the same for Nas. They had substance and they also know how to get the party live (which has always been important in the black community). This is why I think in a versus, Nas would get embarrassed by all 3 of them. Hip Hop isn't just about 'conscious street' lyricism over low fi production or break beats. You need to have more in your arsenal. Is he top 5? Absolutely. Cemented. However I just don't think Nas in in the GOAT convo. It's a race between Big, Pac and Jay with Jay pretty far ahead imo.

See, this is what Clipse did with The Neptunes in the 2000s with much success artistically, albeit only a single album was a true commercial success. Hell Hath No Fury is widely regarded as their best work and as a classic of the genre by almost all who have thoroughly engaged with the record. The album itself is phenomenal for Clipse themselves and for displaying what is arguably the best work The Neptunes have ever done, but that is simply preference since those guys have killed it almost every single time they work 0:52
