Talib was doing that for years. He and Ye are actually very similar, save for one major difference: ego.

Kanye is probably the most influential hiphop artist ever but he was hard reaching, especially when it came to trap with guys such as Gucci and T.I.

The reason he said The Weeknd because of 808s and heart break. The Weeknd would go on to say that without 808s there would be no beauty behind the madness which was his first mainstream popular album. I think Drake at one point said something similar it also might have been XXX I don't remember who it was. But I think he did shape modern pop with the popularsion of the 808s beats so I see where he is coming form but the weekend has decently taken a lot of influence form MJ.

He may not have created them but he definitely played a role in birthing their styles

Without Kanye, the autotune rap and Weeknd rnb form would come much, much later than expected. People gotta give credit where credit is due cause Kanye broke that sound of music in the most impressive way possible.
