Kinsey as an example of “good research” is ridiculous.
Haidt didn't really respond to the criticism of making a conclusion based on bad studies, but if he's trying to get organize studies to disprove his hypothesis, I'm less bothered by that. Edit to add: Also, good on you Reason. I, and many others, critiqued the last video you had of Aaron Brown criticizing Haidt's conclusions, and soon after, you arranged for both to be in the same room. Kudos to you on that, it's an integrity move.
I'm glad Aaron got to speak to Jonanthan here. Love to hear discussions of experimentation and statistical analysis like these.
I always like Jonathan Haidt. He's got a good respect for data and how it's supposed to be used. I haven't read his new book yet but now I probably will.
Kinsey's conclusions were junk.

Yeah, he's a demon.
Appealing to Kinsey? Really? Automatic loss of credibility for me.
Appealing to Kinsey is a rough start 🤨

That's exactly what I was thinking. The father of selection bias and perverted science practice. Ok brown

Ikr? I thought he was going to explain how Kinsey's horrendous selection bias ruined his work, and Haidt was making a similar mistake.😳😬 Far from it! 😬🤦🏼♂️🙇🏼♂️ Gross.

And yet a funny one.
Citing Kinsey makes me automatically want to call the FBI and have them check your browser history
The questioner is the epitome of why, from Gen X on, people fucking hate the hippie baby boomers.
Click bait-ish, but the discussion was good and not Haidt "bad" as the title could suggext. Reason you can do better.

Maybe they CAN do better, but I'm not sure they will. They're as guided by their own ideology as partisans on the left and right. When I first started identifying as a libertarian, I fell into the "We're the only ones thinking rationally" trap as well. Just because we exist outside of the ideologically left/right paradigm doesn't mean we're not prone to the same confirmation bias as everybody else. The title is designed to attract and enflame the attention of libertarians and/or those who agree with Haidt.
The questioner has given me a lot to think about. Sample bias needs to be considered. 😮
“According to the Kinsey Report…” Was enough for me
Correlation is not causation. It’s that simple. Statistics 101.

But there are good experiments done in the book that he simply downplays.
Jesus, it’s hard to take this guy’s criticism seriously considering how continuously impressed he is with himself. Those types of people will never think anyone’s research lives up to their standards… unless they’re dead. Dead folk are easier for egomaniacs to respect because they don’t pose much of a threat.
Why you gotta clickbait, bruh?
Thumbs-UP people! Now 5% (160/3600) is below the YT 10% average.
The book's premise seems sound.

It is. I’ve read almost all of Haidt. This one is solid AND what it focuses on is observable almost anywhere in the U.S.
I wish theyd tell audience members not to give speeches but to ask questions. Theyre letting this guy just ramble. Get to the point.

Was the a panel discussion or an interview with the author. If it is a panel discussion then the critic makes a fair point and Jonathan Haidt should have been more forceful in defending his policy advice. I think the balance was about right if this was a discussion about the book.

The questioner is actually a ReasonTV contributer. He has done a few videos criticizing bad interpretations of statistics and studies. He even did a video not that long ago on this very topic. That's probably why they had him speak here.
kinsey was sick.. i don't care if he called it research, most would say closer to torture.
Great discussion. It would have been much better without the click-bait title. Take the high-ground Reason!
That was a long video of someone saying absolutely nothing of value.

He was actually giving negative value by claiming he didn't measure up to Alfred "Let's track orgasms in babies being 'abused'" Kinsey.
Nick, could you please shut up and let people talk. Those interruptions and remarks become really annoying

Meh. He's funny enough.
Is it social media causing mental health decline or are doctors over diagnosing/prescribing meds? I like Haidt but troubleshooting issues isn't the way to govern. It is his ideal of troubleshooting issues that has taken decades to get things done. As a society we need to know what the issue is before we can address it and this troubleshooting approach only leads to delayed resolution. It is delayed because the powers that be continue to make small changes hoping that change solves the issue, that always leads to even more changes in hopes to solve the issue that isn't getting solved at all. We need to know what the issue is and put in place a solution that addresses the issue, we need to stop with this piecemeal troubleshooting. Edit: Added comment
