Did France and Britain Almost Unite into the Franco-British Union? (Short Animated Documentary)

France and Britain have, numerous times, come close to becoming one state? But how close? And why didn't the two formally unite into the Franco-British Union? Well you can find out in this short and simple, animated history documentary.
Spoiler: it was in 1940 and was a proposal supported by Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle.

    It wasn't a personal union _over_ France, it would have been a partnership. Of course there would have been ambitious people on both sides vying for domination but there also would have been some sort of constitution drawn up dividing powers. You hear a lot about "British Empire this" and "British Empire that" but back in the day the French had a pretty fucking formidable collection of territories, you saw it there on the map at 1:02, even today the French have some nifty overseas territories like the spaceport in French Guyana. This Brit would have liked to have seen what we might have accomplished together. And what we likely will accomplish in 20 or 30 years when this spate of ugly nationalism goes away and Brits start to accept that we are Europeans.

    @Supernova Cinnamon No they weren't, not any more than other provinces nominally under the rule of the king of the Franks. Royal power in Frankia was very limited since the 9th century and the weakening of the Carolingians, so feudal lords were very independent. In fact, Normans were probably closer to the culture in the royal domain (today's Île-de-France around Paris), the OG Frankish/French culture, than Occitania or Aquitaine, which spoke different languages in the southern langue d'oc family than the northern langue d'oïl family. Scandinavians had minimal impact on the culture in what was the March of Neustria, and rapidly assimilated into Frankish culture. With the affirmation of royal power in the 13th century, Normandy was among the first domains to be reconquered by French kings, so whatever local particularisms there were weren't as developped as the ones in Brittany or Alsace-Lorraine later on.

    I'd say even before the war was even ended. Merging France and Britain was probably one of the worst ideas ever. I can guarantee that suddenly the amount of people in France who'd support the Vichy regime would have gone up since it was supposed to regain the northern territories upon the end of the war so the north wasn't annexed whereas the Franco British union would have at least in theory made it permanent which would have been an unacceptable thing for most people and certainly would have led many to rebel against it, with Vichy being a very strong proponent and the other would have been militias that would have shot allies just as much as they would have shot germans. This plan was a terrible idea, and the British definitely wouldn't have taken it kindly either with probably a bigger push from the public to make a ceasefire with Germany so that they could keep France and not have the political balance of their country shift suddenly. Personally I think that it would probably have resulted in an even tougher situation for the allies if it happened, it's only conjecture but I don't see it being a good thing for the allies at all

  • @gerdforster883

    @gerdforster883

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@sephikong8323 Vut there wouldn't really have been a Vichy regime. The whole idea was to keep France from signing an armistice and keep as many french soldiers in the war. Germany would have had to conquer the whole of France (which she would in all probability have done), but the french fleet and a much larger chunk of the french army would have stayed in the war. Also, the Franco-British Union would have had control over the french colonies. So even if a collaborationist regime would have been set up, it would have lacked all legitimacy, just like the Quisling regime in Norway. One of the reasons Petain had any authority was that he was the legitimate head of the french government when the armistice was signed. Germany would have had to station even mord troops in France, stretching the Wehrmacht's limited manpower even thinner. Militarily, it was a sound plan.
