She brings up Alan "Wiccan" Moore- the cause of DC Comics demise since DiDio is still chasing that dragon despite Johns, basically breaking the 4th wall saying "THAT is why you are the villain to HEROES and I need to do this to show you cuz you do not get it!" with Doomsday Clock #10. Dave gibbons art was great. Moore is a hack. She does not understand. Lucas was the hero/ Johns. Iger was the villain/ DiDIo. How are those I.P.'s lookin' in their absence? This Lucasfilm is creatively bankrupt, nothing good can come out of from this crop, they'd need a huge overhaul to turn this around but that won't happen so it'll just die slowly and people will bitch and moan every step of the way.

    I believe they did. The sequel trilogy just feels like we’re retreading the OT to a certain degree. While some new things are added in terms of force abilities, and well that’s pretty much it it doesn’t feel like the mythology is being expanded as a whole.

    Ron Crawford I agree, but that’s sort of what the fans asked for in 2012 when Disney acquired the franchise. I remember fans saying at the time: -No CGI -We want the movies to feel like the OT -No politics -No Jar Jar -No 10 year old Protagonist Disney was obliging as the fans would have rebelled again in 2015 if Episode 7 had more Senate Scenes, more CGI worlds, and Lucas also wanted younger teenage Protagonists. The bottom line with our fanbase is when you give them something new, they whine it’s not like the OT. When you give them something familiar, they whine it’s too much like the OT. You can never win.

  • @User3Ds

    Chris Olivo I don’t really remember anyone saying that they want movies that felt like the OT, regardless though that could mean numerous things, such as more practical effects, less CGI, and no politics. Looking back on it even though the prequel movies weren’t the greatest, they had their moments, except AOC that will always be my least favorite I just hate 90% of that movie And the prequel era as a whole really expanded the universe. I just don’t see that coming from the sequels, and it’s upsetting. Because Star Wars is such a great universe, with such great lore, there’s so much to do with it, but we’re just sitting through Rebels 2.0 VS Empire 2.0.

    Ron Crawford I cant argue that the world building in the PT is much better than the ST (which is pretty much non-existent). Again, the fans always complained about stuff like that back in the day. I still remember the common phrase, “Nobody wanted Episode 1 to be about taxes and trade disputes.” or “There is no Han Solo character in the PT” is another common phrase. I just remember the PT got ripped to shreds from 99-05 as fans have a short memory. Trust me, I argued with my best friend when he was so down on the movies and on Lucas saying Lord of the Rings were light years better. Now he says that Disney needs Lucas back? I will never understand our fanbase.

    @@chrisolivo6591 Saying we want the new movies to feel like the OT, isn't the same as saying we want the plots to be the same as the OT. Those are 2 totally different things. You're an idiot if you can't get that. Force Awakens is generally hate cuz it's obviously a retread. Last Jedi sucks cuz it's also a retread in some parts, but it also just straight-up sucks, edgelord, boring, and insulting. Any great saga has progession with each installment(no retreads), yet all still have the same feeling/vibe. You obviously can never please everyone, but that's how you please the majority, like how the Thrawn Trilogy is. That's how you please most fans. Why can't Disney do that?

  • @logangc8598
    @logangc85984 жыл бұрын

    Yes, Disney and Lucasfilm dropped the ball on not just the films but other forms of media within the Star Wars franchise. I will point out my issues with Disney Star Wars below through several points. 1. Lucasfilm already had a Kevin Feige on their payroll in the form of Dave Filoni. Filoni was George Lucas' Padawan when he developed the Clone Wars television series and is probably the closest person who understands the universe of Star Wars better than anyone. Filoni could have been the overseer for creative input in the Star Wars universe while Kathleen could have handled the financial portions. It is clear that Kathleen Kennedy has no concise view on Star Wars, despite her story group, and considering her handling on the movies, which leads me to my second point. 2. Kathleen Kennedy should stop hiring and firing directors on a whim. Her indecision on how a Star Wars movie should be has dejointed the franchise. She originally had three different directors to write and direct each installment of in the Sequel trilogy only for her to fire Colin Treverow from Episode 9 and have JJ Abrams to pick up the pieces from Rian Johnson's mess he left in Episode 8. Kennedy forced Rogue One to have massive amounts of reshoots and this behavior bled into the second Anthology film, Solo. She hired Lord and Miller only to fire them when they were eighty percent done filming and replaced them with Ron Howard to reshoot most of the movie. How can a person hire a group of directors only to fire them when they were almost done with filming the damn movie? If Kathleen had such a creative problem with Lord and Miller, then perhaps she shouldn't have hired them in the first place. Add to Iger putting Solo in May between Infinity War and Deadpool 2, and Solo's fate was sealed. That decision costed Lucasfilm millions and Solo is the first Star Wars film to flop. For as much crap Lucas got with the Prequels, he was not as financially incompetent. 3. Disney, in all of their infinite wisdom, gave the Star Wars video game license to EA, a game company that was awarded the worst company in America. This decision made Star Wars a joke in the video game industry and a far cry from Lucas Arts. Before Disney closed them down, Star Wars video games were flourishing with games like the Jedi Outcast series, The Knights of the Old Republic, Republic Commandoes, the OG Battlefront series, and the Force Unleashed. What video games have been released under the Disney regime? Two. One was a Battlefront game that had little to no single-player content and lacked content from other eras like the Clone Wars. It's sequel had such a controversy surrounding loot boxes and micro transactions along with bugs that have plagued the game since launch that EA's only hope to win back Star Wars fans is the Jedi Fallen Order game. I hope Respawn kept EA far away from this game because their meddling turned the Battlefront series into a joke. 4. The world-building in the Sequel trilogy is utterly atrocious. The Force Awakens is awful with explaining the events after Episode 6, hitting the reset button without putting any effort to do so. How did the First Order rise to power? How did Snoke do it? Why is the New Republic so inept that the First Order, a supposedly tiny portion of the Empire, achieve resources to create an even bigger Death Star? No answers at all. The Force Awakens is a shallow, empty movie with no attempt at world building as JJ used nostalgia like a set of keys to dangle in front of the audience to distract fans as the questions above, as well as Rey's sudden mastery of the Force, remain unanswered. The Last Jedi gained a notorious reputation for a reason, with Rian Johnson spending more time getting the audience surprised by subverting expectations that he failed to give fans anything meaningful in return (no answer to the world-building, no answer to Snoke, no answer to Rey's Force mastery, Kylo Ren flip-flopping like a pancake, etc). By subverting expectations and not giving the audience anything to buy these subversions, he created an uproar from the fandom. It probably doesn't help that Johnson admitted in an interview years ago that he wants to make movies that half the audience loved and the other hated. If that was his intention, well he got what he wanted. This uproar within the fandom could have been avoided if he and JJ should have collaborated from the start cause right now Episode 9 looks like it's trying to retcon Episode 8 all together. This Sequel trilogy is a freaking mess. 5. The argument that the Star Wars fan base being toxic recently is a lie. OT Star Wars fanboys have been toxic to Prequel fans like me for years. Toxic fans like Simon Pegg, who stated he has no respect for those who enjoys the Prequels and said those films were akin to George killing his own kids, and Patton Oswalt, who joked about going back in time and killing Lucas for making the Prequels, have been toxic for years and years. When fans turned on the Last Jedi and attacked Rian Johnson, Simon Pegg and fans like him had no right to demand angry fans to move on when he was a toxic fan for years. Why is it okay to crap on Lucas and the Prequels but not okay to crap on Johnson and the Last Jedi? I hate double standards and to hear from toxic fans like Pegg makes me laugh when they have been doing it to Lucas and Prequel fans for years. In summary, the state of Star Wars is a mess, in the movies and video games at least. Perhaps TV is the way to go for Star Wars in the future. While Rebels wasn't as good as Clone Wars, Filoni did a decent job nonetheless and I am genuinely hopeful that Clone Wars season 7, the Mandalorian, and the Obi-Wan show are good. Odds are, I'll probably skip watching Episode 9 in theaters and just wait to rent it like I did with Solo. Episode 7 and 8 killed my investment in this trilogy so I would rather watch the Prequels and Originals in a marathon instead.

    Probably the most level-headed take in this comment section. To me the biggest mistake they made was the lack of planning. There seems to be no discernible direction for the films, unlike the next comparable franchise, the MCU, who at the very least had the goal first of getting to The Avengers and then getting to Thanos. Also their "everything is canon" approach backfired as soon as they decided to publish like 20+ books and comics within the span of 8-10 weeks. There's no way they could've carefully edited that many books simultaneously without knowing detailed plans for the films and TV shows.

    citiZen by failing to tell a cogent story with engaging and compelling characters. They were given the most valuable and celebrated IP in media... and one good film (rogue one), one serviceable film (TFA), one incredibly divisive movie (TLJ) and one disaster (solo) are the sum total of their efforts. This says nothing of the behind the scenes issues that have seen other films shelved, directors fired etc etc. Lucas’ stories might not have been the answer, nor were they necessarily better, but what they’ve given us - bearing in mind they had a canvas on which to tell sequels to the greatest trilogy of all time - has been extraordinarily derivative and underwhelming. I hope TROS is phenomenal. I hope it wraps up this trilogy and the overall saga in an extraordinary way... but can we really have faith they’ll pull it off after what they’ve served up thus far?

    citiZen I think the proof is in the pudding. I love Star Wars, but if I didn’t I’d have pretty much no idea a new film is coming out. We’re inside 3 months from the release of (apparently) the final film in the skywalker saga and... where’s the buzz? Where’s the hype? Especially now we’ve cleared Avengers, Lion King et al, their other massive properties and have nothing but clean air through until release. Flashback to October 2015 and the excitement was at fever pitch. Yes, the marketing will ratchet up in coming weeks, but Disney’s handling of the TROS roll out suggests they know they’ve an issue.

    Yes they dropped the ball. The Force Awakens was serviceable but didn’t provide anything new to the franchise. Rogue One was completely soulless with underdeveloped characters and janky pacing from last minute reshoots. The Last Jedi didn’t expand upon any of the story threads set up in the previous film and wasted Luke Skywalker’s final appearance. Solo was a movie that nobody asked for and also had sloppy storytelling after dropping directors mid-shoot and not delaying the release. Disney is currently responsible for the important franchise in movie history and the crap they’re putting out is a disgrace.

    No they didn’t. Sorry kid The Force Awakens was a classic Star Wars adventure film with fantastic new characters and a lot of fun. Rogue One was an epic war story about trust and sacrifice that tied into the OT very well The Last Jedi, while flawed, went to some daring places and is one of the most well made Star Wars films Solo is just a ton of fun from start to finish and not being asked for isn’t a criticism. Alden Ehrenreich was also great.

I mean, the main characters could have been Jaden Korr, Rosh Penin, Kyle Katarn, Mara Jade, Luke, Leia, etc. The villain could have been the spirit of Marka Ragnos or Darth Plagueis. Maybe instead of having Desann, Jerec or Tavion as dark apprentices, they could have used Jacen Solo (as a Kylo Ren type of character)

    Yes. Recycling an expired story from 1977, while innovative in its time, failed to cultivate new audiences. Lucas was 100% on point when it comes to crafting movies only made for fans. Zero innovation and zero cultivation of new audiences is the result of Abram’s / Iger and Kennedy’s decision to make “We can do George better than George” The Force Awakens Johnson rebelled and NEGATED the first film and then asked fans to “let go” of the remaining valuable IP in the Star Wars portfolio. Can you believe that? Iger can take accountability for agreeing to be “spooked by fans that he forgot good old fashion IDEATION and Creativity But Kennedy let someone Infiltrate the franchise and craft a film solely for critics at the expense of growing the franchise across Disney’s 4 quadrants (theme parks, licensed merchandise, film, etc) Bringing in Feige is testament that nobody at Lucasfilm understand the fundamental “franchise management checklist”

As for evidence well maybe audience score on critic sites and comments but yeah that would only be the hard core group so as for casuals would you consider Solo's disappointing box office? I wouldn't because I think there's too many variables surrounding it but it can server as an indicator, guess there won't be an answer until ep 9 arrives but by then the disdain would have been drained out with hype for the most case

  • @rockyseverino9230

    @rockyseverino9230

    I dunno, me and none of my friends liked TLJ. And comment sections all over the internet are full of discontented fans. And I think star wars is unique in that it has the largest hardcore fan base of any franchise. If that's the case star wars is in much greater danger from a fanbase civil war because it has fewer casual fans who just wouldn't care about any of this. Other franchises it seems to be the opposite. They have a small hardcore base and very large casual fanbase. So... Disney is in the best and worst position. They will make 80 percent of their revenue from the hardcores. That's just business As an example it seems the biggest spenders on star wars are 35-55, male and spend 500-1000 a year on star wars. They see the movie nine times, play all the games, buy all the merch etc. The casual fans spend less than a hundred a year and that's usually only in years with episodic films being released. So Disney has a lot to lose from dividing the hardcore fanbase. Have they actually tho? Toy sales for TLJ plummeted, Solo flopped hard, the executive in charge of Galaxy's Edge resigned today because no one's going ... Yeah I'd say there's a lot of evidence of a serious rift between Disneys star wars and a not insignificant portion of their hardcore big spending demographic of fans. All that said I'm rooting for JJ to make a film that delights all star wars fans and sticks the landing. But ask yourself this. Is his ending going to be a better ending for the Skywalker saga than Return of the Jedi? Anakin redeemed, Luke the Hero, the empire defeated... Because if we're being honest all episode 7 did was say that our heroes failed in everything. The dark sides back, the empires back, palpatine is back, there are no Jedi... Did Disney even pay attention to the title of the previous movie? Return of the Jedi? There should be Jedi. And Vader as the chosen one... That's not canon anymore? Like he didn't really accomplish much as a chosen one considering the current state of affairs. I think they needed to have a New Republic, a New Jedi Order, and a new threat. Essentially resetting us to Ep IV just feels insulting. I already watched a starry eyed desert waif overthrow a totalitarian government and it's black robed wizards... I already saw black robed wizards overthrow a galactic republic too. George's treatments for eps 7 8 9 dealing with the microbiotic world, the whills, midichlorians, etc would have been weird, but at least it would have been new and not Dishonored what came before.

    if there's one thing i really hate... it's pandering to an audience. we're not stupid. it's interesting to hear Mark Reilly admit to Disney dropping the ball. I remember when he was a staunch Last Jedi defender, shilling any which way he could for Disney. and I like Reilly. It's just that when he shills... it's disappointing to say the least because i know he offers intelligent in-depth analysis when discussing film. Shilling sucks because it's clearly being deceptive and biased. Josh and Kristian kind of lay low regarding their "honest" opinions... but you could tell they're speaking the same language as those of us who respect OT Star Wars and feel Disney (specifically Kathleen Kennedy) has completely dropped the ball, destroying legacy characters just to save on some Lucas residuals. They just speak "safely". and for Roxy... saying that she doesn't think Disney dropped the ball with this sequel trilogy? I mean... that to me sounds like a token female response to protect her own job over at Collider. She brings absolutely NOTHING to these conversations, and don't care to listen to her opinion AT ALL. If a female must be on the show... try to find someone who knows what they're talking about. I wish Kristian and Josh would start their own podcast, free of the shillycuffs. They're way too good to be on Collider at this point. It's changed a LOT in the past two years.

    I didn't mind the way Luke went out because 1, I assumed he'd be back in episode 9 anyway and 2, I didn't expect him to be this uber powerful Jedi when in episode 8 he pretty much said he'd turned his back on the ways and hadn't really been keeping up his training in the Force. Just to project himself took a huge toll on and it made sense that it would. That's like having an athlete retire for years and then ask him to come back and go up against people that are in their prime. I felt he reached a higher status projecting, knowing what it would do to him, in the same ranks of Yoda and even Anakin. The older Jedi way is out and a newer one will present itself in 9, especially when it seems that Luke/Rey had awakened the Force in the end of 8, as seen by the child sweeping with the Force.

    George had full control for Episodes 1/2. 7/8 are FAR better than those. So I think it’s pretty obvious. Also, now we get regular Star Wars movies/shows with them showing signs of listening to the fans. Lucas would’ve sat on it for two decades again. So Disney is just fine. Not everything is gonna be a hit, but you also don’t have to watch everything. Look at the MCU. Half those movies are mediocre at best, but it just so happens that they have some great ones as well.

    Abrams bears a lot of responsibility as well for embedding the sequels from the start with OT cameos and plot remixes. Ep7 was the time to approach it like Kristian is saying with a fully conceived arc with new characters set in a familiar world.

    I grew up with the prequels, and absolutely loved them, when TFA came out I was expecting George Lucas type story telling, but no we got nothing like that. The score was not epic in nature just a type beat of the OT. The score for the original trilogy fit because of the time it came out in, the prequels added a more epic score and as a kid it connected with me more, the sequels have not connected to me on any level

    Judging by merch sales, reviews and overall fan engagement outside the fanatics... Younger generation isn't nearly as find of SW as the older generations. But since this is the internet, a small but vocal group of fanatics thinks the lager population sides with them. I liked ( not loved) the last Jedi.. Most people I know are indifferent towards it and my nephew's and their friends don't care about it. It's all marvel and fortnite nowadays.

    Disney dropped the ball 100%... The sequel trilogy is poorly written, forgettable, does nothing to expand SW lore and mythos, disrespectful to the most iconic characters ever on screen, and the movies are all disconnected The theme park should have been built around classic star wars not the sequel trilogy. Imagine a theme park with Jabbas Palace, the Death star, Mos Eisley Cantina, Dagoba, Endor Moon, Hoth...With Luke, Han, Leia, ewoks, Jabbas rogues gallery walking around the park. A timeless theme park instead of one based on a polarizing movie. Resistance Cartoon is unloved Rogue One was ok
