Since I got Mark's email back in February, I've been pondering if it was possible that a big Japanese brand copied a design from a small CHinese brand. I decided to buy one and the hit Google and find out. Cheers, Jody

Actually when you first showed that Cadissen, god knows how many years ago, what went through my head was , ‘that looks a lot like a Citizen Ecodrive’

That's not a copy, it's a classic design that can be found in many places. Black dial, silver hands and batons, XII at 12 - that's a modern cheap office/dressy watch. Think back to the 60s - champagne dial, gold hands and batons, 35 mm. Those too were all over the place. I have about 30 of them :-)

This is why I watch less and less watch content including this one.An analougue watch can only come in so many variations. When youve seen one as they say youve seen them all.Jody has a good channel but having said that theres only so much I can take of looking at the same .I think the crest of the wave is dipping now and the tide is receeding somewhat for these channels.
Citizen was selling this model way before 2014, at least here in Brazil. They had a factory here since the 70s. There are models with Roman numbers only at 12, 12 and 6 and so on. They're atrociously made and cost less than the Cadisen.

I have heard that Citizens are not known as quality watches in a lot of countries. They have a good reputation in the US, but perhaps not everywhere else? Are the ones in Brazil junk, and if so, why?

@@acertainshape Don't take me wrong, Citizen makes great watches and they have a great reputation here too, but like every other brand they produce low cost pieces with questionable materials and finish. I may have exaggerated a bit when I said they are atrociously made, though. If I completely ignore Chinese brands, they are hard to beat for the price.
Is “Cadisen” doing homages of Citizen on a regular basis? It seems like their brand name is perfect for that. Same number of letters, syllables, and even the shape of the words looks close.

Almost all of these AliExpress Chinese watches are copying popular designs. Sometimes it takes a little searching, but they are almost never original designs. Parnis watches are sometimes original designs, as are some Sea-Gulls (or at least they combine styles from several different watches in their own unique combination).
Or… maybe they are both a hommage to another watch? Just throwing this out there as I have no idea which watch that would be.

They usually tend to! Citizen are good like that!
Great vid mate, I was gripped! All this time I thought Cadisens infamous C1032 was unique. Someone at Cadisen must have just plucked a random Citizen model they like and said, "let's do that one"
Intro is absolutely legendary, that was amazing mate, but in all honesty the citizen is better just because the watch snobs respect the more famous company, which is sad because they'll never appreciate the masterpiece that is the guanqin cheronometer since 8500 😞😞😞
Hello and welcome. I really love to hear this phrase.
I love your simple and direct explanation of 'homage'. Not sure why so many other people are still confused between homage and fake...
Another great video. Thanks mate
The entire video I was just blown away by the fact that the seconds Quartz hand hit every single marker dead on all the way around the dial! I would buy it for that reason only! Great job
Great research!
Great video, I like both of them and both are well priced, especially the Cadisen. IMO the Citizen is the better looking of the two ... but it could be argued that the Cadisen has better specs, due to the auto movement and the sapphire crystal ... and for less money too.
@serenityinside1

But jfs not a good automatic movement now is it considering its fluctuations through just one day. Auto for autos sake ?!!
@mearsite
Жыл бұрын
At least it's better than the old Seiko 5 movement with far less money for Cadisen. To add more to it, you can't really get NH36 movement in sub $100 watch. That Cadisen is really specs monster for the price
Fairly certain I've seen plenty of fashion watches at the checkouts in primark etc over the years which have the same design- they might predate the citizen even! ofc much harder to find info on them.
Very interesting 👍, I have to admit I was disappointed to find the Cadisen was a homage, not sure why though 🤔
I prefer the Cadisen. The Citizen is a bit big & mineral crystal - meh.
What i like about Citizen quartz watches that even the cheaper ones, the second hand hits all the marks
Could Cadisen's name be also inspired by Citizen? One wonders...
I picked up the Cadisen in 2018 after your video and I still have it in my collection, can’t seem to bring myself to part with it.
Hello, thank you for your review. We have seen many reviews sharing their views on our products. This model is from our classic watch design,it's really a reasonable watch. We are currently planning new products, hoping to bring more good experiences to customers.
Seems like generic design language. or is it? 🤔
They are both nice. I'd go with the Citizen but if someone gifted me the Cadisen I'd be happy with it.
Of the two I'd take the cadisen. What was citizen thinking putting the day date that close to the center? Plus an automatic movement just has that extra cool factor. Same reason I collect records. They're just more fun than the modern tech!
How is this compared to starking which is roughly the same price as Cadisen
Great video. Fun times with watches
Now that we know it is apparent that even the name Cadisen is a ripoff of Citizen. I still love mine though. I have Citizens as well but I prefer the smaller size.
Great video Jody. Keep up the great work

Great intro. Silence is golden.
I believe you are correct - it IS a clean, original design, and has been so since the 60s, maybe even the 50s, and EVERY watch maker seems to have at least one of this design in their back & current catalogs. Watch wearers have been enjoying this horological uniqueness for 60 or 70 years now, if not more. Definitely more if we count the dial designs of some pocket watches. It must be a good design if it has survived this long, right?
I love your show !! You have provided so many solutions to my problems! Maybe you can help me with this one….finding a good Cartier Santos homage…Thanks!!!
I'm still waiting for the Rolex homage of the Heimdallr homage of the Seiko Monster. That would be awesome.
Link for the T-Shirt please!!
It ticks every two seconds, or ticks 2 times every second for a low battery?
Fun stuff, Thank you Jody. A Contra-homage of sorts, if it had in fact been the...case. Both are such nice watches. I know you're thinking what I and I bet a lot of others are thinking too. Is it possible that perhaps the Citizen would look better if they had gone for a black day/date wheel, white print, or my preference would be to move the day/date complication under the center. in Order from center downward, "Eco Drive" logo right under the center then the day wheel then date just above the 6 o'clock, As it is for me it's cramping the style of that 3 o'clock index pointing inward, needs a bit of space. The white border doesn't help.
I purchased the Cadisen in December 2018(Shortly after seeing your review)… It has existed on a calfskin leather strap for the entire time that I found it. It was my first Chinese special that I ever purchased. Since then I’ve purchased no less than 30 more homages. I don’t wear it anymore however it will always remain in my collection. Thanks for doing the research Jody!
Got that Cadisen with the nh36 inside and put it on a fancy faux croc butterfly strap. A Swiss banker wouldn't see the difference.
if I were making a quartz I think I would use a small seconds
9:00 is a Turkish listing
I love my Cadisen! One of my favourite watches. Looks stunning and I got it a few years back on a sale for just over $30!
Very interesting. 🤔
Studio seems a bit too dark Jody - Or is it my eyes!! Great comparison by the way!!👍👍
Jody, my Orient Contemporary Automatic/ Hand-Wind Black Dial Men's Watch AL00005B0 also looks like these two. Except that it has a sub-dial day of the week at the 10 o' clock position. Same matte black, Roman XII and silver markers and dauphine hands 🙄
It bugs me that the second hand on the citizen doesn't reach the chapter ring
Good video, have to be honest, both very nice watches and pretty decent price on both.

I just got my first San Martin and it is amazing.
So the citizen wins on dial, but the rest of it goes to Cadisen for me, sapphire, solid end links and a a Seiko automatic for $50 less.
Nevermind the teashirts its time for the pipe and deerstalker. Interesting but not entirely unexpected. With the day date and solar power perhaps the Citizen is your ideal grab and go. The cadison would be an ideal daily. I have a few NH36s they do drift about a bit but are far better than the spec would suggest. You dont really expect Swiss performance without Swiss prices.
Fun review 😈
I had a Citizen quartz around 10-15 years ago that looked exactly like that. Don't know if Cadisen was around back then 🤔
HA,! I rocked loads of citizens in the late 80s...they are everybit as innovative as seiko.i don't know if anyone remembers the colour digital display models(sort of everyday office watches)the windsurfing model had a similar display. Tried finding them..literally rare as ducks lips now. But that is definitely an area in the back catalogue that would do well now especially with the casio colour modding scene becoming more popular..oh and the polished bracelet on the cadisen looks terrible.at the same time you can never grumble at the specs for the cash

Fantastic video once more! - thank you 🧡 If you're interested I'd be very happy to see your review of the BLIGEN submariner hommage with white dial, black lunette and black indicators with NH35 and other movements - a stunning beauty for 90 $. Cheers & keep going 👍🏻
Just think the day date is horribly placed on both. It’s less jarring closer to the outer edge of the dial.
Helloooo Jody
With so many models out there, its possible that this is convergent evolution(unless they are made in the same factory). Heck when you would try hard enough, maybe theres your doppleganger out there.
Prefer Cadisen. Sapphire crystal on such a dressy watch is must have. Plus twice less price.
If I were a judge I would rule in favor of Cadisen. That 21mm lug width on the Citizen is inexcusable. Citizen just can't make a case. No pun intended.
I've got both bracelet versions. Silver I bought brand new for £33 and the black I bought second hand but as new for £15. 2 of the best watches I own and by far the cheapest. Only beaten on price by my son's F91W collection.
I wasn't a fan of the Cadison, but this time around I see the appeal. I don't think it's necessarily for me, but it's a good, inexpensive all-around watch for a lot of people. It's pretty dressy and would work great as a business casual/business dressy sort of environment. It reminds me a bit of 90s watches.
Czech listing? Looks turkish to me! And did you not notice that Cadisen sounds a bit like Citizen? Seems logical that they copy Citizen designs then, doesn’t it?
I'm still not quite sure why all these major watch brands make 42 mm dress watches. And yet the Chinese seem to make 40 mm dress watches. Take the best of both of these watches and you would have a killer watch.
Citizen NB4000, past release.
Asia Malls have loads of watch venders and all kinds of watch makers, Japan, Swiss, USA etc. Any watch you can think of, $29 - $99. Copy and sell, make a buck. Get a Tissot or Rolex CHEEEEAP. But, like you said, wearing a lie. I did manage to make a Rado Diastar with a $75 clone. I needed the case and bracelet for an original movement I bought on EBay. Cleaned and lubricated the movement and was a perfect movement swap. The movement cost me $165. Cant tell any difference from the $2000 original.
As someone who owns that citizen I'm am so relieved that the citizen came first. I was worrying for a while.
Is it possible that they just made a similar looking watch without seeing the other? It's a pretty basic watch to be honest... triangle silver indices and Roman at the 12. Not exactly ground breaking stuff...
even their brand names ….
That intro tho 😆

Now you know how big margin profits are for watches. No wonder there are so many microbrands out there. And let's not even mention big/famous brands. Most people are just dumb fools.
On the Citizen, the position of the day and date too near the center of watch, and because of it, it looks rather silly.
best cold opener ever:D:D:D
The Cadisen name is very similar to the Citizen name as well....
Great vid Jodie, don’t beat yourself up too much ha ha. Big question is…. Which one will you keep??
So the tables have turned?
They look about as similar as Catherine Zeta-Jones and Kate Beckinsale to me.
cadisen - citizen another homage? (comparing names)
Every watch is a variation of Archimedes first clock.
The Cadisen looks a bit cheap and blingy in comparison. Great value though obviously.
I think Most of the people who buy fake watches are people that own the real one but wear the fake when they are out and about or on vacation. Basically anytime they think the watch could possibly be lost or stolen.
You could just as easily say that the Guanquin GJ16034 has the same dial.
@JustOneMoreWatch
2 жыл бұрын
Different hands and case and crown though.
With your sleuthing skills, can you tell us the origin of the Guanqin GJ16034, which shares its case with the GJ16013 and the HAIQIN 8612G? It has a tungsten, 12 facet bezel and tungsten bracelet center links. The dial of the GJ16034 is reminiscent of both the Citizen and Cadisen models in this video, but the model features sword shaped hands, not Dauphine.
