Did Catholics Make Up Purgatory?

What happens after we die? For Catholics, we believe that we will be judged and placed in either heaven or hell, but that those welcomed to heaven might have to take a stop along the way in purgatory. What do we know about this place, and did this doctrine come from?

I was close to suicide, I cried out to Jesus before I was going to do it begging for His forgiveness. His Holy Spirit arrived and He showed me His own grief, my families grief, of losing my life to this fallen world, it was so so sad that I could never..it was way more intense and painful than my own feelings, I never felt suicidal again. I'm grateful for how vulnerable the Lord was with me 🙏 But I asked the Lord, where would I have gone? He revealed to me a place that was separate from Him, not torture like hell but very..very...very lonely. I would've been walking around alone for quite some time, but not forever. Sounds like purgatory. Thank You Jesus for saving me, I'd much rather be here worshipping you till the time comes that You take me home ❤🙌

Jessica you are worthy of his love and we can be completely free from sin. (Romans 6) We just pray that every depression is a lie. Every abuse in the church that’s happens to her or any abuse period. @@brigitteschmidt4284 We are absolutely perfectly clean because of what Jesus has done for us on the cross. Flesh and blood does not inherit the kingdom of God and flesh and blood is what is stained by sin . Your spirit assuming you are in Christ is born again from above and there is no condemnation to those who walk after the Spirit and not after the flesh . Coll 2:6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. 8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ. Purgatory is an example of deceptive philosophy in that it sounds good as we all feel less than clean in the eyes of God , but what has Jesus done for us? 9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority. 11 In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead. 13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. Still think you will need further cleansing after death.?

@@brigitteschmidt4284 It would be better to 1) make a disctintion between justification, sanctification and glorification. The cleansing we're refering to here is glorification, not justification. Most Protestants relate "cleansing" with justification, therefore the metaphor can be misleading. 2) Many Protestants think we believe we can earn justification by suffering on purgatory, and it's not that. You wouldn't go to hell if imperfectly purified precisely because it's Jesus who saves us. Because of Him, you go to Heaven and therefore you go to purgatory. 3) Purgatory is not a temporary mini-hell. You're not paying half the debt or something: it's God comforming us to Him... which can finish either on this life or the other. Pain is a side-effect, like in a surgery. Who saves you is the doctor. 4) When someone is actively trying to convince you because he thinks you're lost it's difficult to argue, but I hope this helps in other cases!

Heres a couple scriptures to point out what the catholics beleve to be purgatory A final cleansing before heaven. Matt 5:25 25 “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. 26 Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny. This has been portrayed as spiritual prison and yet Jesus is not talking to believers here He is talking to the Jews of His time . Verse 26 is overlooked by those claiming to pray for the departed in p[urgatory. Who pays? In Luke 16:19-26 we have the rich and the poor after death and the rich guy is now suffering and the poor guy is in Abrahams bosom / paradise. This is also used as a plausible explanation for purgatory and yet verse 26 clearly states that the rich guy is stuck forever in his position. 1 Cor 3:15 plausible purgatory but wait, what about the context that starts in verse 11? 1 Cor 3:11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. Foundation is constructed of ? 12 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. test the quality of each persons ? 14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. So a reward is offered for something that survives? 15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved-even though only as one escaping through the flames. So it seems that you can not build with sin but you can build with good works but you can also waste your life building with bad materials . Does the scripture tell you that you will be burnt? , punished? or put in prison for any length of time till you pay for your sins? “Day after day every priest STANDS and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins,He SAT down at the right hand of God. Since that time He waits for his enemies to be made His footstool, because by one sacrifice He has made perfect forever those who are being made holy” ( Hebrews 10:11-14 ) Emphasis added because by one sacrifice He has made perfect forever those who are being made holy Is this clean enough for heaven where no unclean thing will be? Pointing out the contrast between the continuous and repetitive acts of the priests compared with the one act of Jesus’ sacrifice is the main theme of Hebrews chapter 10. What the priests did over and over, Jesus did only once. And since that time He has been seated at the right hand of God the Father because the work He was sent to do is finished and complete. We see the same thing with creation. On the seventh day God rested from all His work ( Genesis 2:2 ). Not because he was tired, but because He was done ( Hebrews 4:10 ). He saw all He had made, declared it good, gave it the ability to reproduce and so He entered into rest. In fact Adam and Eve were created in that Sabbath Rest. There was no sin, it was a paradise and they fellowshipped with God in perfect unity, then came the fall of mankind. After Jesus completed His restoration work on the cross, like God He sat down because everything was done. Redemption had been accomplished. Sins had been forgiven. The Sabbath Rest that God originally instated in the garden had been restored ( Hebrews 4:1-11 ). In other words, Jesus rested because there was nothing left to do. Now He waits for His enemies to be made His footstool. The book of Hebrews opens with this very idea, “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven” ( Hebrews 1:3 ). Evidence that this is currently the case is that the universe is held into place by His powerful Word. Jesus is the glue that is holding everything together and this testifies to the fact that Jesus is seated in heaven at the Fathers right hand. This is good news for us because it means that His one sacrifice, in contrast to the law’s many sacrifices, worked. We, by this single offering are completely cleansed, perfected, consecrated and made holy once for all. Just like Jesus, we can enter into the rest that God desires for His people. This Sabbath Rest is in the person of Jesus Christ and comes through trusting in Him ( Colossians 2:16-17; Hebrews 4:3; 9-10 ). By His one sacrifice we have been made holy and the law has been fulfilled in our lives. “For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man, in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit” ( Romans 8:3-4 ). All of this is guaranteed by witness that Jesus is currently in heaven occupying the seated position of right hand to God the Father. Everything has been done and His work is completed. In the same way, our job is to believe in the One that God has sent ( John 6:29 ) when this happens our work is also finished and complete and we enter into the very rest that God promised His people right from the start. So do we need a final cleansing before heaven , the scriptures say no.

I think I read somewhere that Jesus already paid the full price for my sins. That would mean that if I have faith and accept his salvation, I am already purified by God himself, and no further payment is necessary. How can we say to Jesus: "Nice try- but your death on the Cross wasn't quite enough to cleanse my sins." Of course, even as Christians, we are still flawed. But that's the power of the blood of Jesus- all our imperfections are instantly cleansed when we are accepted in God's Kingdom, and we become literally flawless. I understand that this is such an incredible gift, people have trouble understanding how it could possibly be true. "Surely, there is some sacrifice I still need to make to earn my way into Heaven." NO! There is nothing we can do, nor need to do; it's all been done for us by Jesus. He has that power! My God is an awesome God!

I'm afraid "ONCE SAVED, ALWAYS SAVED" is NOT Biblical. This FALSE belief was INVENTED by John Calvin during the Reformation.... Under this theory, the Protestant believes that one is saved when he accepts Jesus as personal Lord and Savior. This is comforting - after all, who wouldn't want assurance? According to this view, true Christians are the ones who will persevere to the end. For those who accepted Christ during their lives but did not persevere to the end, the doctrine calls these people superficial Christians. So true Christians will go to heaven and superficial Christians will not. Not only is this teaching not Scriptural, it is difficult to accept the teaching on reason. Jesus SAID: Matthew 10:22 International Standard Version 22 You will be hated by everyone because of my name. But *the person who endures to the end will be saved.* Matthew 24:13 International Standard Version 13 But *the person who endures to the end will be saved.* Mark 13:13 International Standard Version 13 You will be hated continuously by everyone on account of my name. It's hard to accept, because it's such an awesome gift that we don't deserve. Jesus loves us so much that he eradicates our sins, completely and totally, if we but accept His gift and worship Him. You don't have the power to do it, not on Earth, and not on some way-station in between Earth and Heaven. Only Jesus can do it, and He does it instantly! That's how much power He has! Your own conscience is correct if you feel you aren't good enough. You aren't. But you are wrong when you say you haven't sinned enough to be sent to Hell. The really Bad News is that ANY amount of sin is unacceptable in God's eyes. He only accepts perfection. Of course, this is not a metaphor used in scripture. Instead, the consistent picture of scripture is that even the tiniest amount of sin is enough to separate us from God eternally, and that, if any of our salvation is down to our own efforts, the entirety of it is, and Christ’s sacrifice is of no use to us. But if we are truly forgiven by Christ, we are truly forgiven in total, and there is no further sacrifice or purification needed. “A little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough.” Gal 5:9 “You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace.” Gal 5:4 “And their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” Now where there is forgiveness of these things, there is no longer any offering for sin.” Heb 10:17-18

I'm a protestant, but their idea of purgatory isn't denying that only those saved by Jesus will be saved, nor even saying that the Christian must do good works to get into heaven. Even as protestants, we can acknowledge that many Christians are going to need an adjustment period to get over realizing the various ways we failed. Really, the only disagreement is whether or not this adjustment should be described as a phase or a place (and the fact that it's all metaphysics means describing as a time or place is analogous rather than concrete anyway), and to what extent we should describe this as suffering. The issue of praying for the dead is only a problem if you believe in soul sleep: if they are alive in Christ, then praying for them is no different than praying for anyone with a pulse.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines purgatory as a “purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven,” which is experienced by those “who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified” (CCC 1030). It notes that “this final purification of the elect . . . is entirely different from the punishment of the damned” (CCC 1031). The purification is necessary because, as Scripture teaches, nothing unclean will enter the presence of God in heaven (Rev. 21:27) and, while we may die with our mortal sins forgiven, there can still be many impurities in us, specifically venial sins and the temporal punishment due to sins already forgiven. When we die, we undergo what is called the particular, or individual, judgment. Scripture says that “it is appointed for men to die once, and after that comes judgment” (Heb. 9:27). We are judged instantly and receive our reward, for good or ill. We know at once what our final destiny will be. At the end of time, when Jesus returns, there will come the general judgment to which the Bible refers, for example, in Matthew 25:31-32: “When the Son of man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.” In this general judgment all our sins will be publicly revealed (Luke 12:2-5). Christ refers to the sinner who “will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come” (Matt. 12:32), suggesting that one can be freed after death of the consequences of one’s sins. Similarly, Paul tells us that, when we are judged, each man’s work will be tried. And what happens if a righteous man’s work fails the test? “He will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire” (1 Cor 3:15). Now this loss, this penalty, can’t refer to consignment to hell, since no one is saved there; and heaven can’t be meant, since there is no suffering (“fire”) there. The Catholic doctrine of purgatory alone explains this passage. Then, of course, there is the Bible’s approval of prayers for the dead: “In doing this he acted in a very excellent and noble way, inasmuch as he had the resurrection of the dead in view; for if he were not expecting the dead to rise again, it would have been useless and foolish to pray for them in death. But if he did this with a view to the splendid reward that awaits those who had gone to rest in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought. Thus he made atonement for the dead that they might be freed from this sin” (2 Macc. 12:43-45). Prayers are not needed by those in heaven, and no one can help those in hell. This verse so clearly illustrates the existence of purgatory that, at the time of the Reformation, Protestants had to cut the books of the Maccabees out of their Bibles in order to avoid accepting the doctrine. Prayers for the dead and the consequent doctrine of purgatory have been part of the true religion since before the time of Christ. Not only can we show it was practiced by the Jews of the time of the Maccabees, but it has even been retained by Orthodox Jews today, who recite a prayer known as the Mourner’s Kaddish for eleven months after the death of a loved one so that the loved one may be purified. It was not the Catholic Church that added the doctrine of purgatory. Rather, the Protestant churches rejected a doctrine that had always been believed by Jews and Christians. Why would anyone go to purgatory? To be cleansed, for “nothing unclean shall enter [heaven]” (Rev. 21:27). Anyone who has not been completely freed of sin and its effects is, to some extent, “unclean.” Through repentance he may have gained the grace needed to be worthy of heaven, which is to say, he has been forgiven and his soul is spiritually alive. But that’s not sufficient for gaining entrance into heaven. He needs to be cleansed completely. It is entirely correct to say that Christ accomplished all of our salvation for us on the cross. But that does not settle the question of how this redemption is applied to us. Scripture reveals that it is applied to us over the course of time through, among other things, the process of sanctification through which the Christian is made holy. Sanctification involves suffering (Rom. 5:3-5), and purgatory is the final stage of sanctification that some of us need to undergo before we enter heaven. Purgatory is the final phase of Christ’s applying to us the purifying redemption that he accomplished for us by his death on the cross. Catholic theology takes seriously the notion that “nothing unclean shall enter heaven.” From this it is inferred that a less than cleansed soul isn’t fit for heaven. It needs to be cleansed or “purged” of its remaining imperfections. Sanctification is thus not an option, something that may or may not happen before one gets into heaven. It is an absolute requirement, as Hebrews 12:14 states that we must strive “for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.”

@@andreeattieh2963 The Catholic church claims to have compiled the scriptures with the help of the Holy Spirit , they did not write the scriptures. The Catholic church does not believe that the scriptures are the only beliefs to have so they bring in tradition and oral instruction to complete what Catholics are to believe. Traditions and oral instruction handed down from the apostles? Just can not be verified, whereas the scriptures can. What happens in the Eucharist? We have a bloodless re-sacrifice of Jesus for the sins that we confess to a priest before taking the wafer and the cup of wine . Hebrews says that by ONE sacrifice Jesus has made perfect forever those He is making Holy. Heb 10: 8 First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them”-though they were offered in accordance with the law. 9 Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.” He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10 And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. 11 Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool. 14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy. 15 The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First he says: 16 “This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.”[b] 17 Then he adds: “Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.” 18 And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary. There is no reason to re-sacrifice Jesus ever. There is no precedent in scripture to confess your sins to a priest ,or for the priest to assign penance or abolition of your sins ,that Jesus has already forgiven you of . 1 John 2:2 The Catholic church says it follows the scriptures concerning the Lord's supper / Eucharist, but the Catholic church has a different version for some reason. The Last Supper was a Passover/Seder meal. The Jews drink 4 cups of wine that is symbolic of the 4 “I will” promises of God in Exodus 6:6. Jesus skipped 1 cup of wine, the Cup of Redemption, identifying with that Cup & then repeated the words of Moses saying “This is the cup of the New Covenant in My blood...” thereby fulfilling the Old Covenant. So did the apostles that night with Jesus actually drink His blood? No...it was symbolic just as the 4 cups of wine are symbolic every Passover for the Jews to this day. Therefore the entire meal which fulfilled the Old Covenant in His body & blood is symbolic. We don’t actually eat His body.

I’m not Catholic, but this is a beautiful concept… to have a time of further repentance and purification before entering His perfect and Holy presence doesn’t at all make the grace of His Atonement any less true or powerful. For me, the beauty of His grace is not only in that it saves me, but is in how it changes me … that His Spirit comes into my heart and changes it … transforms the fallen natural man me into a more spiritual being thru the process of repentance, whch is the process of purification & sanctification thru the Holy Ghost. Having a sinful nature doesn’t bring us happiness. So part of the beauty and majesty of His grace is that He changes me so that I can let go of the miserable, self-centered me and experience pure joy along w/ His pure love. For me, I want to be as pure as I can be when I stand in His presence… not b/c that is what saves me, but b/c I love Him.

You don't know the Catholic Church's official position on 2 Maccabees 12:42-45 as it pertains to existence of Purgatory. As to my point# 3 the following is the position of the Church as it pertains 2 Maccabees 12 :42-45 * [12:42-45] This is the earliest statement of the doctrine that prayers (v. 42) and sacrifices (v. 43) for the dead are efficacious. Judas probably intended his purification offering to ward off punishment from the living. The author, however, uses the story to demonstrate belief in the resurrection of the just (7:9, 14, 23, 36), and in the possibility of expiation for the sins of otherwise good people who have died. *This belief is similar to, but not quite the same as, the Catholic doctrine of purgatory*

Robert Parker The books of Maccabees were among the most popular and important works for the Jews at the time of Jesus, being the story of how Hannukah, the Festival of Lights/Feast of Dedication (A holiday Jesus is cited as celebrating in John 10:22-23) came to be. It was considered scripture and part of the Hebrew Bible until medieval times, when it was excluded because it was originally written in Greek. No Christian Church excluded it from their canon until Luther UNILATERALLY decided that since it wasn’t in the Hebrew Bible of HIS day it wasn’t important. Same with the rest of the so-called “apocypha” (what Catholics and Orthodox call the deuterocanon) which were all part of the original Koine Greek translation of the Old Testament, the Septuagint, and approved as Canon by an ecumenical council of all the Bishops aligned with Rome or Constantinople long before their Great Schism or the later medieval shenanigans Protestants use to claim that the Church “lost its way”. Christ himself makes allusions to deuterocanonical books such as Tobit in his teachings because, while not all as well-written as the other books of the old testament, they were widely known and useful teaching tools. And Maccabees is by far the most important and clearly historical and scriptural of this odd set of Jewish scriptures written in Greek-so important that the Jews still celebrate the holiday it founded despite having excised it from their main collections of Torah-adjacent scriptures so Hebrew students wouldn’t have to learn Greek as well. Maccabees is absolutely biblical, and by what authority did Luther decide otherwise? A gut feeling (which *can* be a sign of the Holy Spirit at work, but also a million other things, and flew in the face of over a millennium of scholarship and similar ‘gut feelings’ saying they *did* belong) and a few discussion with contemporary rabbis who weren’t aware of the books’ full history and and didn’t care about their popularity at the time of Jesus or references to them in the New Testament.

Verse 10 read it again it must be a lie! 14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy. verse 14 no it can not be it must be another lie ! 15 The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First he says: 16 “This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.” 17 Then he adds: “Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.” But, but, that's not what Catholics are taught they have this stain of sin that Jesus must have missed ! 18 And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.

The specific reason Protestants, especially explained by Dr. Martin Luther, (Doctor of the Augustinian Order), is so much against the Doctrine of Purgatory, was that the Roman Catholic Church at the time was selling Indulgences/Papal Decrees, and praying to Relics to shorten time in Purgatory by thousands of years. The Church was incorrectly doing this to make money, along with other matters that were absolutely contradicting Councils. The particular matter of selling Indulgences to make money through forgiveness of sins was specifically corrected at the Council of Trent. The passage mentioned in this video is 1 Corinthians 3:15 - "15 If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire." Presumably, this is happens after death when the person changes from the mortal to immortal body. A point to think about is that this is not happening in Time as we know it, it is outside of Time, in the Eternal.

The definition is clear, if someone dies with faith and following God's commandments, yet is impure, would he be damned? No! Purgatory is the process where Jesus cleanses impurities before someone impure is admitted into Heaven, because nothing impure can enter Heaven. It may be painful, it may not. But that's not the point. The point is that it is a real process we deduce primarily through *reason.* How can impure beings get into a pure place where everyone is pure? Makes no sense, there must be a purification process. This is it. Purification = Purgatory.

Thanks for the video Fr Casey. It is really interesting to see a catholic's point of view on Purgatory. I, myself am an Orthodox Christian so I honestly don't believe that the references in scripture are sufficient to conclude that purgatory is a 'milestone' to salvation. Further to that, yes saints are pious, righteous and have lived in the glory of God, however they are human. They can be wrong and I don't think we should take their thoughts on the matter as canon as well. Jesus' desciples needed a long time to understand what Jesus was teaching them whilst He was with them on Earth, does that mean they did not live in the Grace of God? No! Therefore I don't think the few vague mentions of purification refers to what the Roman Catholic church describes as Purgatory. Correct me if I am wrong but the Roman catholics are the only christian denomination that believe in the existance of purgatory. I really cannot judge, because I obviously do not have the full knowledge or the competences to comment with high certainty and accuracy on these matters, but I personally think, and what my church teaches is that salvation through Christ is full, there are no ifs, no buts. To me purgatory sounds like: you're saved, but there's this extra step you have to do, like .. to put it very bluntly small text on a contract you sign. And I need to talk about the elephant in the room as well... In the middle ages the Catholic church did capitalise on the belief in Purgatory. There are quite a few instances when people were asked to pay so priests can pray for the souls of their closed ones in purgatory. Fortunately the Catholic church has long abandoned these practices. But however it seems to me like it's saying now: Oh we've been preaching this for too long we can't back out on this. Again thank you Fr Casey for making this video and by my comment I meant no disrespect in your beliefs and despite minor differences and misunderstandings different churches may have, I am humbled by your devotion to God and the people. Thank you!

It suffices for everything, but that doesn't mean our sanctification is completed once we're justified. If it were, we would sin no more. I think the mistake is trying to explain purgatory as a payment, when it's glorification, we being made perfect when in touch with the holiness of God (some Catholics believe purgatory happens right before God's presence and because of it). Simply, glorification will be painful/unconfortable for the ones who were not very open to God's sanctifying grace on life. That's why purgatory is for the already saved.

@@giovannimartini6405 I'd like to see scriptural justification for what you're saying. No where in the Scriptures is that taught. This sounds like Catholic church doctrine superseding God's revealed word. It is true, sanctification is a process...a working of the Holy Spirit in our life. The book of Romans clearly lays out what God has done...foreknown, predestined, called, justified and glorified. With God, in Christ, it's all one thing...completed...all the work of God. Salvation is totally of God, not of man. Jesus paid the penalty for our sin totally and completely, if He did not, His sacrifice was insufficient and we are indeed lost without hope.

I am so grateful for your channel. I am not Catholic but I have learned so much and am so much more appreciative of Catholicism now. Your videos make KZread a much better place my friend. As a Reformed Christian, salvific security is very important to me. I think of Martin Luther's (am I allowed to speak of him here? 😂) anguish that he describes when he was trying to live the Catholic way. He never quite felt secure that Jesus was going to accept him. Yet, even as someone who believes in eternal security, I still struggle like Luther did to believe that I will be with God in heaven at the end of the day. With that in mind, I think you make a great case that there is a lot of security in the theology of purgatory. I also agree that it's not as ridiculous as most Protestants make it seem. At least you guys have a sufficient explanation for the praying for the dead passages 😂. There is one thing that gives me pause though. I think the doctrine of mortal sin does a lot to prevent security in the Catholic system. The thing I enjoyed about your explanation of purgatory the most was when you explain that there is room for our imperfections in the Catholic system. But what happens when our "imperfections" are classified as mortal sin? From my understanding, unconfessed mortal sin throws everything out the window, right? Faith and trust in Jesus does not matter at that point. If I walk out of confession and commit a moral sin and die before my next confession, there is no purgatory for me right? Please correct me if I am wrong. I know this is one reason why Luther under Catholicism was such an anxious mess concerning his salvation. I recall one time he mentions that sometimes he'd be in confession multiple times a day due to this anxiety. Any and all thoughts are welcome.

  • @larryluch8178

Mortal sin has full knowledge and full consent and be of a serious nature. If you die before Confession but had the intention of confessing you are forgiven. It’s logical really. Jesus refers to Purgatory in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus. The rich man is not in the hell of the damned but rather in Purgatory. 3 reasons. Firstly he addresses Abraham as Father, a term of respect. Secondly, he asks for the salvation of his brothers which no damned soul would do. Thirdly, he improves in charity from selfish prayer to selfless prayer. The parable of the 4 servants in Luke12 also outlines the judgement that awaits us. One servant is saved, one is lost and 2 are punished to varying degrees. Heaven, Hell and Purgatory. Blessings

Interestingly, this is not far from the Orthodox Jewish belief that “Hell” is for no more than 12 months and is essentially a place of purification, albeit without fire. Rather any suffering is psychological or mental. Rabbi Manis Friedman gives some good talks on this. So although there are, of course, great differences with regard to such subjects as salvation, etc, the broad concept of a place of purification is certainly similar.

The Catholic dogma of “Purgatory” is one of the hardest maxim to convey to a Protestant and to a non-Christian. In fact, this is one of those that they dispute harshly. Simply put, this is not In the Bible at all which makes you question your understanding and ask “What kind of people actually enter Heaven?” Is it only the perfectly acceptable and not the marginal? Are there even any “marginals”? Perhaps it is all just a binary outcome; a forgiven and a not forgiven but is this really the case? It also makes you ask your understanding of the mercy and the extent of God’s forgiveness of people’s sins. Furthermore, the apologetics or the theological defence around it are all from the opinions of old Catholic Saints and their writings; not from a clear text explanation in the Bible. If it is not Biblical, could it still be true? This dogma is almost the same as the dogma of the “Rapture”. The first time I heard about this teaching is from a TV preacher. I don’t think he was a Catholic. Nevertheless, understanding these things or not, people still go on praying for their loved ones who have died, don’t we?

@Matthew Jones that it seems logical that no one is going to die sinless and so some degree of mercy and justice will need to be carried out on all of us before we can actually be with God. That is true no one dies without having any sins but those sins have been totally forgiven by Jesus and they are not attached to you. You die, you go to heaven there is no final cleanup as it is not needed at all.Everything that you can dream up as to why you think you are not clean enough for heaven has been addressed by Jesus on the cross where He nailed all of our trespasses.

@Matthew Jones Jesus paid the debt for all of our sins as it says in Coll 2:6 Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, 7 having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude. 8 See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ. 9 For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form, 10 and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority; 11 and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ; 12 having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13 When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, 14 having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him. So Jesus has done everything for you because we can do nothing on our own to clean up our lives. Roman 6:1,2 tells us it is important hoe we live our lives, just as Eph5: Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; 2 and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.

@Matthew Jones Although James is not written to gentile believers James 1:1 He does make an important statement that faith without works is dead. That does not make salvation a work event. But there has to be change in behavior to present yourself the Christ . Acts 2:38 repent and be baptized . So what does baptism represent ? It is the outward sign of the inward confession of Christ as to dying and rising in newness of life. Romans 6:1,2 tells us we are saved by Gods grace but that in no way gives us a right to sin. Eph 2:5-9 tells us that we are given the gift of salvation by God . God is not willing that any should perish but all might come to repentance. So at what point are you given the gift of salvation? 1 Cor 6:11 is after a whole slew of sinful actions and what happens to those that are in Christ is all past tense as it it already is manifested in your life. We look to our fellow man and we see a confession of Christ and yet their lives do not match their confession , then we look for scriptures to back up our beliefs that salvation is a long drawn out process, when those very scriptures tell us , it is past tense and done. Coll 2: 9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He forgave us all our sins, All past tense, as in done already not on the to do list. 14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

Praying for good is a good thing, better than not bothering to pray for good at all. It keeps you out of trouble, and perhaps encourages good into the thoughts of others who may not have at that moment been thinking about good. I believe this is a worthwhile inclusion to our daily routines of preference. Kind regards LM p.s. He didn’t mention who first mentioned purgatory. Wasn’t it Dante the poet?

It’s interesting how often we are purified and refined in the fire of suffering during life. There may be nothing I’ve been so grateful for in my life as this, even though it has been harder than I thought I could bear at times. As an Episcopalian, I’m not committed to the idea of Purgatory, but it seems to make sense. Love Father Casey’s videos!

It also makes sense in the light of God's justice, as people with last minute conversions before their death would still be saved regardless of their heinous acts, although they would have to atone for their impurity before entering God's kingdom.

At the risk of angering a few people, the idea of purgatory sounds like the Hell world of the Buddhist faith called Natalia. Souls/beings sent there are made to suffer, but the torture is meant to cleanse a person of the bad karma they’ve acquired in their past life. Afterwards they’ve the chance to be reborn and start over with a clean slate. The actual process can take anywhere from weeks to years depending on the severity of the sin. The only sins/bad karma that can’t be purged at as follows-intentional killing of one’s parents, the killing or wounding of a holy person, or creating a schism within the Buddhist community.

I'm afraid that is 100% WRONG. "Sola Fide or Faith alone" is NOT found in the Bible, therefore FALSE. It's a 16th century INVENTION by Martin Luther and the Reformers.

Another powerful evidence of purgatory is the report on the martyrdom of Perpetua and Felicita. One of them had a vision that her dead brother was not in the heaven and that he suffers in a special place. She prayed for him and received a vision that her brother was in the heaven. As well Gloria Polo Ortiz in her book: Struck by lightening writes about her vision of how her father was saved from the way to hell after it was prayed from him.

The nuns in my Catholic Schools (12 years!) would often say "offer it up for the suffering souls in Purgatory". In my home, it was a joke with my two daughters when I would tell them to "offer it up". Life is essentially an open book exam where we know what the questions on the test (see Matthew 25:31-46).

I am pretty sure my grandfather was in Purgatory, and it's why my family and even those non-believers, experienced his presence in the house after he died. Many years later he appeared to my mother in a dream and told her to tell the family he was sorry for how he treated people. My mother cried for days about the dream. I wasn't aware of Purgatory, but as a young person I thought he came to tell my mother that after he had been spiritually cleansed, and now that makes a lot of sense. I think he spent a while fearing to move on so lingered as a ghost around...maybe Purgatory explains ghosts...people who do not want to face things, people are just lingering?
