The story of Atlantis all starts with Plato. One of the OGs of philosophy, Plato had him some great thoughts, and people have claimed that all philosophical thought is now pretty much just a footnote to Plato’s writings.Plato wrote a bunch of works in his time, and he wrote one piece of dialogue called Critias, which discussed a lost island by the name of Atlantis.
By all meanings of the word, Atlantis was definitely a Utopia. It was the Utopia even before Thomas Moore wrote his book by the same name in 1516. Atlantis was wealthy beyond compare but they didn’t let it cloud their judgement or self control, and for many generations, everything was perfect. People were pious towards the gods, they did not take up war without just cause or have any civil strife.
The Atlanteans had a bad case of Hubris, a greek term that means they had too much pride and thought they were better than the gods. And as we know… the gods are never very kind to people who think they’re better than them… just look at the story of Bellerophon and how he tried to fly up mount Olympus on Pegasus… that ended super badly. So Zeus saw that the Atlanteans had become every spoiled rich kid from my super sweet 16 and was pretty much like… bye!
Plato says Atlantis was struck by an earthquake, and became an impassable barrier of mud to voyagers from there to any part of the ocean. And just like that… it was gone.
Where is the lost city of Atlantis? There are many theories like the Bahamas, Antarctica, perhaps they were the Minoans... the list goes on. It's most like though, that the story was an allegory, and Plato came up with it to prove a point.
Atlantis wasn’t actually a popular Greek myth until the late-1800s when an American by the name of Ignatius LDonnelly wrote a book called “The Antediluvian World” in 1882 saying that he believed that there was an ancient civilization that was technologically and morally superior to everyone else. He believed Plato’s Atlantis was this amazing civilization that spawned other civilizations and that all advances in humanity could be traced back to this lost island and added a lot more “facts” that have become part of the Atlantis myth. For example, Egypt was a colony of Atlantis, the gods and goddesses of the ancient Greeks, Phoenicians, Hindus and Scandinavians were in fact the kings, queens and heroes of Atlantis and all of their feats were true historical events, and that under the oceans somewhere, there lies a sunken island with an incalculable amount of treasure. The problem is, not one of his claims had any hard evidence.

Great video. As an anthropology graduate, I'm so happy I found this channel via the India collaboration. It makes a lot of sense why Plato would set Atlantis in the middle of the Atlantic. Those waters were entirely unexplored. Sailors were still hugging the coasts for the most part, as the age of exploration would not dawn for nearly 2000 years. For Plato's audience, the Atlantic ocean was the ultimate mysterious unknown, a boundless, borderless, endless fog of dreams and nightmares alike, the perfect setting for a grand and moralistic tale of the ancient forgotten past. Many such tales set beyond the fringes of the known world have been conceived by just about every civilization in history. Even today, we dream about wars between exotic alien civilizations in distant galaxies as parables of our own petty squabbles. We must not forget that the people of yesterday were not so different from the people of today.

Thousands of years In the distant future, an archaeologist will be giving a lecture about his search for Atlantis. He will describe in great detail how his excavation uncovered what he thinks might be a fifth Canopic jar. After years of decipherment he can finally read aloud the jar’s ancient sacred inscription “Play-doh.” In hearing this most of his audience will think he must be talking about an Ancient Greek philosopher.

When I started studying the late bronze age, and specifically the Minoan culture, I also learned of Thera, the small island that Raven speaks of briefly. After the collapse of the bronze (unofficially 1177 BCE) the world around the Mediterranean went to shit. People were displaced, writing was lost, much of the world had to start over. Songs, stories and poems were how memory was passed down. Thera (modern Santorini) was an island with a ring and a caldera in the center of it. It blew up in 1628 BCE (or somewhere around that time. Thera was an extension of the Minoan civilization, who would hugely influence the Greeks. The archeology at Thera reveals amazing and beautiful structures and paintings, and could have been thought of by many as "advanced" in its day. Seriously, look it up. With the story of its demise as much of it fell into the sea. It seems likely that the Greeks or Egyptians kept the story alive, though highly embellished, as were all stories from before the collapse. There are many Greek myths that were based in bronze age truths, and I see Atlantis as one such story. Solon the sage (6th cent. BCE), heard of it from Egyptian priests-the only civilization that wasn't totally destroyed by the Sea Peoples, but severely weakened in the bronze age collapse. Egypt would have possibly retained some form of exaggerated tale of so-called Atlantis. There are good reasons to believe that the myth of Atlantis is based in the fall of the Minoan civilization in Crete and the exploding volcano (Thera) of one of the many surrounding islands around it. I said I would only write 2 sentences. Sorry for the rant, and if you've read till here, may Bright-eyed Pallas Athena- Whose Shield is Storm and Thunder, bless you!

The impassable barrier of mud does not sound like an island in the middle of the ocean. It actually sounds more like the potential site discovered near the south western Spanish coast more recently. I have been very skeptical about this Spanish discovery, but it is beginning to sound very interesting regardless of whether it is Atlantis or not. OTOH Akrotiri and the Minoan ruins have their own thing and far more funding going into their excavation - I am not worried about their being properly dug up and documented, save for a possible coming eruption of the volcano at Santorini which is supposedly overdue at this point.

The only problem is that it doesn't lay on the other side of the straight Gilbritar. During the Bronze age, that straight was very well known, as Tin came from beyond that straight. Most didn't known where exactly Tin came from...they just knew it came from somewhere beyond the straight. Thanks to the Phoenicians going to great lengths to maintain their monopoly on Tin. The Egyptians were perfectly aware of the straight of Gilbritar's location. If the destruction of Atlantis was a Bronze age event, then Atlantis can definitely not be in the Mediterranean. But, the story is probably made up as a kind of parable. Kind of like the story of the boy who cried wolf. Ancient Greeks believed the story was made up for this purpose (very few took it literally). Just like very few take the story of the boy who cried wolf literally. The story isn't even about Atlantis. The story centres on an ancient version of Athens...with side characters and a protagonist (Atlantis). We know a ton about Athens...enough to know that the story is clearly made up. No example of a utopian civilization existed, so one was created for the purposes of the story.

@@tylerdurden3722 Pointing to one thing and saying "this is wrong therefore it's all wrong" is a very poor and highly simplistic way of viewing things like this. Plato says that he heard the story from Solon, who was told the story by an Egyptian priest. It is entirely reasonable to assume that the Egyptian priest told Solon that the location was "beyond the mouth of the Nile" or "beyond Egypt's known world" and that Solon, Plato himself, or a later translator, misinterpreted this to mean beyond the Straits of Gibraltar (there is actually debate over whether the Pillars of Heracles even referred to Gibraltar). Even the date that Plato gives, of 9600 years ago, can be reasonably interpreted as pointing towards the Minoans - remove a zero and you have a fairly close approximation of the actual date of the Thera eruption. Is it a perfect date? Hell no but it is tolerably close for someone writing a third-hand story almost 2500 years before even the idea of C14 dating. You cannot debunk Biblical Literalism with a literal interpretation of Biblical texts and this is exactly what you're trying to do here. You're assuming that Plato was 100% accurate in writing down what Solon told him, that Solon was 100% accurate in relating to Plato what the Egyptian priest told him, and that if modern evidence doesn't precisely match the ancient source then said source must be fiction. Even your assertion that no example of a "Utopian" civilisation existed is wrong. Did a literal Utopia ever exist exactly as written? Absolutely not but when one group of people are living hand-to-mouth in mud huts and another is feasting on imported luxury foods in stone-built palaces (castles have defences, palaces do not... the Minoans had no need of castles (until they did and it was too late)) with hot & cold plumbing and flushing toilets, covered in some of the greatest art of the ancient world, in what other way could you describe the difference? Have you ever seen a Hollywood movie based on a historical event? Just because a detail is wrong doesn't mean the event depicted didn't happen.

Great video! I love hearing about professionals talk about the myth, Atlantis is really fascinating as long as we don't try to claim it's real. It's a really fun fictional story though. I think it's important to remember, when people talk about what Plato said, that Plato himself *didn't* talk about Atlantis. He wrote a character, Kritias, who talked about Atlantis. And Plato wrote that Kritias heard it from his ancestor (grandfather?) who heard it from Solon who heard it from an Egyptian priest... and ancient game of telephone described in a dialogue that Plato made up to serve as a morality tale. Sure there could very well be inspirations but not actual real-life Atlantis.

I think Plato also hints to the date, Atlantis was supposedly swallowed by the sea, which would pretty neatly date back to the end of the last ice age (~10.000BC), where the map must have looked very different.

Swallowed by the sea could literally mean any event of sudden flooding - people get too caught up on the end of ice age being relevant to these things, the only thing I've ever seen that comes even close is the sunken Khambat Bay 'city' off the coast of India which even then is not dated to 10,000 BC.

I recall a theory from a number of years ago, that the myth of Atlantis may have originated from an instance of soil liquefaction after a severe earthquake. From what I remember, the theory was that a small city/town may have been swallowed up by mud, and the survivors then embellished things with the retelling. Also, have you ever seen a British programme called Time Team? If so, I'd be curious about what you thought of their methods.

As a teacher of History and a History nerd myself discovering your channel was like a Holy Grail to me. I had my days of liking Atlantis myth as well as one of my chilhood friends and I remember reading one book wich I find most interesting - "An A to Z of Atlantis" from Simon Cox. Simon refers other details of the Atlantean myth like the similarities between far apart civilizations like the Egyptians, the Hebrews and the Aztec, regarding for exemple the Bible's Deluvian (wich I would like to see a video about it). But one of the things I particularly liked in Cox's book was that he refered another source for the atlantean myth in a medieval (I believe german or scandinavian) manuscript - don't remember the name, I read it in 2007. I very much suggest you to read Cox's book, since it contained information, I haven't seen anywhere else. And yes I share the same opinion that Atlantis was just a political allegory. Another tip for those "react to movie" videos: please be more detailed in the info, not just the big parts. Talk about the clothes, the scenarios, the hairstyles, etc. I felt that there was a lot more to say about the movie Troy (2004). Also do the same for videogames: you got good series like Assassin's Creed, Uncharted, Tomb Raider and even solo games like Far Cry: Primal. Please also do vintage movies. If you want suggestions I can help a lot. (I bet you dont understand Portuguese, but I did similar videos but with not so much succes. Thanks for the job. I was looking for this quite a long time).

Great video. Just one thing: the idea that Orichalcum contains gold comes from a "latinized" misspelling "Aurichalcum." The original word means something like "mountain copper" or "mountain bronze." It is believed by many experts to be a naturally occurring copper-zinc alloy that has been found in ingots. Basically, its likely brass.

It's in Portugal barely excavated, Castro do Zambujal, Vila Nova de São Pedro culture (Chalcolithic and Bronze Age, almost 2000 years in existance and central to many West European developments, notably Bell Beaker). Some details that fit: 12 km long marine branch (silted at the end of the city and civilization, probably by tsunami), located on the middle hill of an oblong peninsula (almost island), 10 hypogee (artificial cave) neo-megalithic (probably princely) tombs (coincident with the 10 kings of Atlantis), bull "ritual hunt" traditions then and to this very day, close to many very rich mineral sources (exploited later by the Romans), in contact with Mycenaean Greece at least via the other South Iberian civilization of the Bronze Age (El Argar, phase B totally influence by Greece), no native elephants but major trade in ivory with North Africa (further east the ivory arrived from Syria), extremely influential. I even think it's at least possible that the Atlantean invasion of the Eastern Mediterranean coincides with the final Late Bronze Age collapse c. 1070 BCE (a century after the last documented "Sea Peoples"), when both Egypt and Greece finally fall (Egypt to the Berbers, Greece very mysteriously but Athens survived untouched).

Plato's Atlantis was said to have existed 9000 yrs. before his time (428-348 BCE). The site and events you suggest may have been the inspiration (as could one of the scenarios Raven lists), for the story, but in no way confirms the notion of a lost, highly advanced agricultural maritime culture thousands of years before the bronze age.

In those days the whole of Greece was utterly destroyed (but Athens remained unscathed) and is also the time when Lower Egypt was conquered by the Meswesh (Amazigh or Berbers), a slightly better documented episode. It is, very approximately, also the date of the silting of the canal (of the almost exact lenght said by Plato) or "marine branch" that linked Castro do Zambujal (Atlantis or its port bastion rather, the hill remains to be excavated) to the Atlantic Ocean and the end of that long-lived civilization (pivotal in both Dolmenic Megalithism and Bell Beaker culture).

One thing you didn’t mention and probably don’t know why a lot people believe it to be true is the fact that Plato gives a geological date of flooding for the submergence of Atlantis which is 9000 years before the time of Solon(9600bc) which matches the date of great flooding called meltwater pulse 1b. So I reckon you should create a video giving your opinion on the parts that an advanced civilisation with advanced agriculture was submerged by the sea and swept from the earth so that mankind had to begin again like children with no memory of what happened before and that it happened 9000 years before the time of Solon.

Someone thinks they found a place that fits some of the criteria for the lost city of Atlantis. It's not in an ocean, but it is an "island" of sorts located in northwestern Africa s of (I forget) a mountain range. The area is very barren and difficult to get to and no one lives in the immediate area. It seems a large sinkhole was the cause of the destruction, but the "island" is surrounded by several rings of water and land that resembled descriptions of Atlantis. It might be Atlantis or some ancient replica from Plato's description. Either way, it does appear worth investigating further. (Found it on YT, but can't remember the source).

Do you think the possible legitimacy of Atlantis being real might have possibly had to do with the discovery of Troy, a city once also believed to be fiction?

  • @russellmillar7132

    @russellmillar7132

    Жыл бұрын

Yes the discovery of Troy confirmed that the ruins of a city, having been finally unearthed by mainstream archaeologists, showed that the well known myth about Helen of Troy was set in a historical place. One difference is that the story of Atlantis was not a myth. There were no legends about any of the heroes (demi-gods) like with Troy, and until the 1800s, as Raven points out, unless one had actually read Critias, it was mostly unknown. This place was not part of a well known story in any of the cultures in the known world at that time, from which a plethora of tales, myths, legends, and mythical beings are known. Now someone might want to use the example of Troy to indicate that Atlantis may still be discovered because that would tend to legitimize the claims made by various authors ( I. Donnelly, Graham Hancock, Emanuel Velikovsky etc). And if actual evidence (ruins, artifacts) are, as with Troy, uncovered, tested and analyzed, and shown to objectively establish the existence of this culture, I would wholeheartedly embrace this evidence as a truly extraordinary find. Till then I don't consider that the fact that there have been places first known by myth that were found to be factual means that all stories from ancient times are about real places or events.

Long before the Mediterranean Basin filled with the rising water levels from the climatic warming and subsequent melting of glaciers at the end of our last ice age, there was a river that carved it’s way northward across northwest Africa called the Nile. At it’s mouth, the Nile took a huge plunge in elevation before reaching the floor of the Mediterranean. We do not know if it was a giant waterfall, but the Grand Canyon pales in comparison to what existed long ago. Now mentally put that away for the moment. Let’s look at any great river delta to see sediment buildup, the formation of land, the course change of various distributary channels, and we can see that it is entirely possible that Atlantis could have simply been a seaport city state on the Nile’s delta that was considered an island simply by being cut off by a new distributary river channel. Plausible so far. Now consider the makeup of a river’s delta with deposited soil being added with that distinctive subsurface steep drop at it’s seaward edge. This lends to regular undersea mudslides at that sharp drop. Now compound this with being in an earthquake prone zone, for we know that Alexandria has certainly been toppled in the past by earthquakes. What if the city state “island” of Atlantis simply succumb to a massive river delta landslide with the follow-on mountain of silt merely covering any remains?

There was definitely not an inland sea in Africa in Romulus's time (no later than 1000 BC) - someone didn't do their research properly.
