@@northyorkshirers500special2 Paul did you ever have any interest in the Nissan Skyline R32's that raced against the Sierras in Australia ? . Love your cars 👍👍✌
Gotta say a special thank you... I always followed Dick Johnson as a kid and always said that this was the fastest and best car to race in australia under that class of racing and it proved itself to be the best in England as well.. Such an iconic car I'm glad someone has it and values such an important part of Australian motorsport history.
G'day lads, I remember when Dick first wheeled the Sierra out in Australia, he struggled at first with all sorts of problems. Like you say, blown turbos, other engine dramas, and of course the diff issues. It was a program of continuous development. Once Dick decided to develop the cars completely in house then things really changed. He worked with Ron Harrop to develop the diff, and employed local experts to develop a new electronic management system to end the reliance on UK programs, which were being sourced from Andy Rouse at the time. To this day Dick doesn't have anything nice to say about Andy Rouse. 1988 was an amazing season for the DJR Shell Sierras, they were practically untouchable. But it wasn't long before other local Sierra teams played catchup, Glenn Seton's Peter Jackson cars, Tony Longhurst's Benson & Hedges cars (one of which was in the last video at Paul's), Colin Bond's Caltex car, and Allan Moffat's ANZ cars were all super competitive at different times over the next couple of years. Dick maintained a slight advantage but never enjoyed total dominance like he had in 1988. Of course in 1990 the 4WD Nissan GTR made it's first appearance, and once Fred Gibson and the Nissan team got that car sorted out in 1991 the dominance of the Sierra was over. It's noteworthy that the DJR cars (#5 and #6 I suppose they were by then) were the only cars that had any chance of mixing it with the GTRs - it's been claimed by some (including Dick himself) that for Bathurst qualifying and Top Ten runoff in 1992 his Sierras were developing over 700hp, which is just incredible. You can see from footage of his Top Ten lap he had it wound right up and it looked like a right handful to drive. What a machine eh? It's good to see Dick is enjoying some success again now as part owner of DJR Team Penske with the Mustangs - he spent a lot of time without the big budget required to be in the winners circle in Supercars so it's nice to see him smiling again in the twilight of his racing career.

thank you for your input , as you say the rs500 was adopted by many in Auss , dominating until the 4wd Nissan took over , how the hell they allowed 4wd to join is beyond me , but that's history .

@@northyorkshirers500special2 According to the Group A rule book 4WD wasn't illegal, the clever folks at Nissan took a long hard look at the rule book and built a car that fitted within it, so when it hit the track it couldn't be banned because it was legal. My personal view is that Nissan were very clever. I thought at the time there was nothing to stop Ford developing a 4WD Sierra, the platform already existed in the Sapphire rally cars, and locally the Holdens could have done it too - a few years afterward they marketed a 4WD V8 Monaro road car so it was obviously in the pipeline (the Monaro is basically a 2 door Commodore). I've often wondered what it would have looked like had Australia continued with Group A and those cars had been developed. Ford Australia even developed a turbocharged 6 cylinder Falcon (the now famous "Barra" engine) so they could have gone to that platform once the Sierra reached the end of it's development. But as we all know Ford and Holden chose to bitch and whine instead of building a better mousetrap, so Group A got scrapped and now we have the V8 Supercars instead. Still great racing, but no technological development. These days it's basically a silhouette series with no brand relevance whatsoever. Cheers.

I have a lot of respect for dick and the challenges he has faced and the success he gained. His achievement in developing these cars was amazing, but the manner at which he conducted himself sometimes put me off. When the locally developed skylines put the shoes to him, his team were the loudest voices calling for restrictions on the nissans. They called for boost restrictions and extra weight in the skylines, meanwhile his car had more HP than any other rs500 in the world. Hypocrite. He also instigated the angry crowd before the famous pack of arseholes incident. He hasnt changed either. In the last 2 supercar series his team were penalised for illegally modifying their qualifying engine, deliberately holding back the field with their number 2 car to let their number 1 car get ahead, and they have crew members monitoring opponents pits looking for things they can submit complaints about to penalise the other teams. Pretty low. Spoils my opinion of such a determined racer.

@pete smyth yes i cannot believe they kept the win. After everything was checked, it was obvious. The driver was told to slow down because they didnt know where the accident was, then when interviewed the team boss said 'car is overheating' with a wry smile on his face. Clearly lying. The team were given a huge financial penalty but were allowed to keep the win? Disgusting lack of sportmanship.
Mighty DJR! The world's best Sierras.
I love the way that you two have spoken so highly of Dick Johnson who is a lovely guy and a very talented racer. It’s great to see that this car is being lived and looked after, and Bathurst 1000 is an amazing race and one of the hardest on cars and drivers and the heat was the hardest thing on the 500’s
Such a privilege to watch this Sierra RS500 with Dick Johnson at the wheel for the Australian Touring Car Championship in the late 80's and early 90's... The famous car no. 17. Great car, fantastic driver (Dick Johnson) and such a great time for Australian Motorsport...

nswhorse again you miss the point. It's a Bathurst winning Aussie made and built race car, designed, developed and driven by a legendary Aussie driver. This car, the Moffatt rx7 and the Nissan gtsr represent a major turning point in Aussie Motorsport history. Just another race, just another season and just another sierra to the Brits. Now it's in a private collection, never to be seen by the public on the other side of the world.
Thanks from Australia for keeping this peice of our history. Very much appreciated.
Growing up in Australia watching Bathurst there would be a lot of Aussies who would love to get hold of that car. Qualifies for Group A/C historic racing down under.

A piece of our Aussie motorsport history. You lucky bastard Paul.
I was at Bathurst when the Texaco Sierras won. At the time I loved the fact Ford was fast but we in Australia couldn't buy a Sierra in a showroom (even a slow 4 door) so it was bitter-sweet for many here. Even Dick Johnson lamented the Ford Falcon was not running V8's at the time..... Eventually V8 supercars took over..... But the 80's and 90's were awesome for touring car racing.
That brings back memories, got a pic of me standing next to Mike Smiths Mobil 1 RS 500 at bands when I was a nipper back in the 80s ,Great to hear so much knowledge of the RS 500 some of which I never knew ,happy times ,nice one Adam 👍😊

I first heard of Paul reading Fast Ford mag back in the day when he parked an Escos on Scarborough seafront. I’ve watched a couple of these vids with Adam, but this one made my day especially when Paul revealed that this Dick Johnson car became Robb Gravetts BTCC car as I’m a huge BTCC fan from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, and I saw this car at Donington racing Andy Rouse, great days of silly power cars and not enough back end grip!. I used to work for Ford back in the early 90s and got to drive all the Cosie's, loved the Sapphire 4x4 and was the best handling car I have ever driven to this day, you could literally throw them in to roundabouts doing 60mph and they wudnt budge. The only problem was the massive turbo lag the standard car had but once it kicked in was amazing. Highlight of my career was driving an RS 200 which can only be described as ridiclous lol Great video thanks takes me back.
