Diane's First Job EVER! | S01 E04 | Full Documentary | All Documentary

Tony and Diane are experiencing a shift in their relationship when she gets a job for the first time in seven years. Scott and Leanne's business goes from strength to strength, and single mum Rachel bravely hands out her CVs to local companies in a bid to find work for the first time in fifteen years.
Three long-term families dependent on benefits are given a cash handout of 26,000 each, the current maximum yearly benefit cap for most families. In return, the families must agree to sign off benefits, and see if one large cash sum can turn their lives around for good.
The experiment asks the families to use the money in a way that can positively change their circumstances, make them happier and ultimately remove them from the benefit system. However, there are no strings attached and contributors will make their own decisions, spend money as they want but with the knowledge that they've given up their lives on benefits, and there's no more to come.
Will the families be able to grasp this extraordinary opportunity or will the temptations of a large sum of money in their bank account distract them from their good intentions of building a business or finding work?

I just cannot wrap my mind around how Tony would not be able to go on from this to make some sort of a career in TV. The lad is one of the most lovable characters I have seen on TV in a long time. Surely somebody in TV can see this and get some sort of show going that revolves around buying items and selling them at a profit. Usually the folk on these shows are pretty meh, but Tony was outstanding.

Crazy how the benefits cap was £26k in 2016 when this was filmed yet the national minimum wage at that time whilst working 40 hours a week only brought in £14976 a year at £7.20 an hour.

But that's an overall cap that a household can get, Not what anyone who claims benefits actually gets - Not even every household either. But yeah for those out there that are earning the cap limit it's basically a decent wage.. used to be an even better wage until the cut back, But still decent compared to what many workers get!

But that 26k was actually the old max cap - London cap for people with children. It was reduced in late 2016 and is £25,323 in 2023 (£22,020 for couples/lone parents outside London). If you earned min wage and had kids, your wage would have been topped up with benefits. That was always the flaw in the cap that the Tories never explained. As someone working in welfare, I can tell you, the cap was (is) brutal especially where rents are high.

Tony is definitely my favorite character in this series. It would be interesting to see how this experiment would fare here in America. Only conflict I have with this experience is that the families involved should have been given professional guidance on the challenges of being a business owner. Also, a money management counselor would have gone a long way for all involved.

@graham moore I'm not talking about selling them. I am talking about setting them up. Make deals with store owners to place them and then split money taken with the property owner. That is almost completely passive income. Maybe there is some issue I am not aware of, as I am in the US, where "slot machines" as they are called here are extremely controlled and can only exist in a few places in the whole country. Maybe the market is already completely saturated and there is nowhere to put them. But it does at least to me feel like if he could get some more of them and had places to set them up, that could be an alternate income stream that would take very little of his time. He could do it in addition to running the resale business.
