Diana: The Musical broke me

Ойын-сауық

Did anyone want or need a bland, tasteless biographical musical based on the life of Lady Diana Spencer, written by the keyboard player from Bon Jovi and an okay-at-best Broadway lyricist, featuring comically on-the-nose songs from Prince Charles, Queen Elizabeth II, and apparent himbo legend James Hewitt? Maybe not. But they gave it to us anyway.

It feels like this is less based on the life of Diana and more like the life of Diana as told by the tabloids. The whole “Diana bored out of her mind and is in tune with what the common man likes” came from a photograph of her asleep at that one concert being depicted. The “F*** You Dress” is ripped straight from one article’s headline. And then there’s how they glorify those tabloids in “The Words Came Pouring Out” when they just had a song about the evils of the paparazzi in the first act and said paparazzi were what caused her death. You can really tell this British feminist story was written by two old American dudes with all the emphasis on how she’s a “pretty pretty girl in a dress, but look how much she’s accomplishing, oooOOOoOoh” and the conflict is centred strictly around her husband.

Ngl "An Officer's Wife" was one of the only songs that made me feel the slightest bit of emotion because it was the only song that actually gave us the tiniest bit of actual character insight, which all of the other songs had absolutely none of. I remember sitting there thinking that the song would have worked better in a musical about the Queen herself.....Yeah you know you've messed up when your Diana musical is making me wish for a musical about the Queen. 😂

The James Hewitt song and his bare-chested appearance on that pommel horse killed me. I properly laughed 🤣 He was always swooned over and known for being Diana's dishy ginger nut on the side and if we're honest, when you consider him next to Charles, he could only have made that kind of entrance all “Sup bitches...” I was mildly perturbed with what felt like Camilla and Queen pimping Diana out. They were really pushing Charles to wed and bed a 19yr old virgin, you know - like any normal mother and lover would 😂

I watched this musical on Netflix in an airport while I was waiting hours for a flight and stressing about the trip, so I was worried that my situation was making me dislike it more than it deserved. But I got a lot of enjoyment out of consistently pausing to tell my husband "wait...I think this musical really sucks" and quoting some of the asinine things they say in it. I've been getting more and more into musicals, and I don't think I've listened to one all the way through that was this bad.

People in the UK (and romance-novel fans of a certain age) would certainly know Barbara Cartland, she was like the British Danielle Steele or Nora Roberts. She was an Agatha Christie-like figure, except for romance novels instead of mysteries. She might not be as well-known in the US, but in her day she was one of the top-selling authors in the world, with somewhere in between 700 million and 2 billion in book sales.

If was a good ending in my opinion yes its abrupt, but the start of her coming into a flash of lights and her leaving into the darkness with the lights still flashing, was a great way to symbolise that her life since the beginning of her and charles has been media and camera flashing in her face all the way till long after her death, i also like the several news people talking about her achievements and her looking around once again showing even though she tried she didnt always have a voice and everyone spoke for her, its definitely not bad i could see a better written version in a properly dedicated diane musical.

So I’m sure I’m not the first to think this but I feel what they were partially getting at was one of her last lines. If Charles steps aside and let’s William reign so that all of her pain would not be in vain. I think this was ultimately meant to be a commentary that William should be the next monarch after the Queen. Have Camila and your life but don’t become king.

Secrets and Lies just makes absolutely no sense. At the start of the song one of the characters declines a picture with Diana, becuase "I could loose my new job, be tossed from my flat" but then a few minutes later he sings "Then like a good chap, sure I'll take the snap, for what is there really to loose?" My dude you just said it not even five minutes ago, you could be made homeless and unemployed, that's what's to loose! I forgot just how God awful the dress song is, especially the part with the Queen doing that high pitched Hmming, oh it's god awful! I also just cannot take the character of the Queen seriously when she's singing. Another huge cringe lyric is "You're the heir to the British crown, you were bred to settle down" 🤢🤮 I like a handful of the songs but overall the musical is as you said so tasteless, I hate how often they call Diana a tart and talk about her virginity, like good gods have some respect for the dead! I will say though, I simp for Roe Hartrampf's voice, and the ensemble, oh man their backs must be broken becuase they carried the whole show

Why does this exist? What was the makers' motivation? I mean, the structure of a song allows characters to express thoughts or emotions in ways spoken dialogue can't. So, if you create a musical based on real life people, you can provide insight or different points of views that couldn't be provided by reading/listening to the news. That was this team's approach when creating MEMPHIS, but here, for the most part, the songs explain what happened and... that's it. It's quite shallow. And disjointed. The plot rushes through events that happened over many years. Without getting into spoilers, it has one of the most awkward endings I've ever seen in a musical. It's as if the idea to dramatize this story didn't come from a place of interest, let alone passion. If the makers did feel that way, great, but the end result doesn't reflect it. That being said, Jeanna de Waal's performance is good. Her co-stars are passable, including Judy Kaye as Queen Elizabeth... but she's very bad as Barbara Cartland. The way the paparazzi's cameras are incorporated into their choreography is creative. Too bad that there are 1 or 2 other scenes where the dancing doesn't match what's happening. Listen, if you're going to dedicate an entire musical number to how hot a guy is, don't have him be shirtless. No, not because it offends me or anything, but because it's a lazy artistic choice. You're already throwing a lot of money into this production, so why not design a sexy costume for him? I should clarify that I prefer musicals where songs are used sparingly. While this one isn't 100% sung-through, there isn't that much spoken dialogue (I guess that's why the composers/lyricists were included in the Worst Screenplay category?). Should I call this an objective mistake despite it being a personal preference? I'd say yes when it comes to this particular show. You see, it would be one thing for the score to contain a small amount of very long songs... but no, it contains a large amount of very short songs. They're very catchy (I might add some to my playlist), but the lack of proper transitions exhausted me. Not to mention the 3 or 4 instances of questionable lyrics. If a stage musical is recorded, I prefer it to be a live performance instead of this cinematic hybrid (à la HAMILTON or CATS). That's actually how I saw MEMPHIS (on cable). Sure, having a variety of angles can enhance a scene. For example, when the paparazzi chase after the title character for the first time. The camera is inside the phone booth she's hiding in while they take photos of her, so her fear is more palpable. However, this is an exception, not the rule. Everything was designed to be done inside a theatre and in front of an audience, not to be shown on a screen. The way a certain character talks to the audience looking towards a black void (come on, at least take advantage of the format and have her look directly at the camera!), the timing of the jokes, the pauses for applause... It doesn't feel right. Also, the changes in locations and costumes are meant to be impressive because of the speed, but if the cast and crew members aren't doing it in real time, what's the point? The end credits of a musical will either specify which actors sang which song, or they'll omit the names altogether (since we already saw who did so with our own eyes). Here, the names of the characters are written instead. It's not wrong; just something odd I noticed.

I have to ask if you boil Diana and James Hewitt’s relationship down to they are conventionally attractive so they should be together and yours supposed to cheer. And yet Charles and Camilla are kind of mocked even though they have shared interests. So is the moral show shallow is good?

I could have ***sworn*** this was a concept from the 2000s. Or maybe it was a punchline? The flashing lights at the end, yiiiiikes! Just yikes. Quick sidetrack! I kinda didn't hate when Netflix did 'The prom' my mom, sister and I saw it when it was on Broadway circa 2017 and it was really good! So I was very glad for them to get some of that exposure. But Diana sounds Yikes. Not a very good attempt.

I loved it! I've seen it literally 30 times. Each character had its own musical signature. Diana was 80s pop, Camilla lite FM. The queen snare drums, etc. Of course it's "dated". It took place in the 80s

You don’t have to like the show, but I really get frustrated when people debate artistic legitimacy. I saw the musical on broadway, and the energy of this show was purely electric.

So this video came out 9 months ago, so I don't if you'll even see this, but I think I was the Charles/Camilla shipper you didn't know existed. Like I know now that the general consensus is Diana: yay, Charles and Camilla: boo, but as an American who paid absolutely no attention to the British royal family, the first time anyone explained the dynamic between Charles, Camilla and Diana, I thought it was the greatest long game love story in history. Like on paper, Camilla and Charles start a relationship, he leaves her TO JOIN THE ARMY and when he comes back, she's freaking ENGAGED? But they manage to stay friends while he goes on to marry the younger, hotter, popular girl who his family approves of? It's like My Best Friends Wedding if Dermot Mulroney had, after a few unfulfilling years with Cameron Diaz realized that it was supposed to be Julia Roberts all along, they start an affair, he tells her he wants to be her tampon, and then after Cameron tragically dies, he marries Julia despite the disapproval of his family and an entire nation. Ok that's the greatest love story ever told and would absolutely watch that movie. Ummm don't come at me, I have no idea about anyone's actual personalities, never seen Spencer or The Crown or this amazing looking musical, and let's be real even fake performative monarchies should totally be abolished in 2022, right???

Just listening to your commentary my personal opinion is that you are being to harsh on the Muscial and its creative team. It seems you did not get some of the intentions and details they tried to incorporate. Just because you could not sense them does not have to mean it can be qualified as (your quote) "stupid". Musicals are from an almost bygone era nowadays it seems unfortunately, so it takes some courage to incoporate songs from the period. I suggest you to more carefully do your research before providing a commentary.

Paul, I am a huge fan of musicals. I did not care for this one. I gave this show more than a fair shot. I watched it all the way through multiple times and familiarized myself with the soundtrack. Frankly, if it's necessary to do more "research" than that to get anything out of it, then I don't think it did a very good job. Furthermore, this is a review. It is my opinion. If you have a different one, that is just fine.
