The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

They couldn't make this song today.. Just like Elvis's "In the Ghetto" it would have been declared hateful and racial appropriation accompanied with protest and twitter lynch mobs etc, even though these two songs were created with love and compassion.

I agree. It is fantastic for sure and when you examine it closely the tension and progression of the song is so masterful it is hard to think of other songs on the same level. When this was made Motown was a hit machine loaded with talented people who would collaborate and brainstorm to give each of their artists a hit and then another and another. If you had to get bogged down in committees and contracts and disbursements with everyone demanding a share of the credit and profits it never would have happened. Sure money was important but these people were jazzed and inspired by the seemingly endless success at the time.

@Chris Bonilla Hernandez don't be mad because he told the truth. The Supremes were definitely not what black people would call soulful. They sung pop music and ballads mostly curated for white audiences. They had a few R&B soul hits like this one and "Someday" but they were few and far between. That doesn't take away from it's significance.

And plus they had outstanding writers and producers. And Diana Ross’ voice sounds so magical on lead. Her voice is that of innocence, sexy with uniqueness of phasing her lyrics perfectly. From the "Did you know" files....... 1968 This was the Supremes' first number #1 hit not written by the team of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland, as the trio had left Motown in a dispute over royalties. Motown founder Berry Gordy wrote this with staff songwriters Deke Richards, Pam Sawyer, R Dean Taylor and Frank Wilson. Instead of writing about love, they came up with a much more controversial song about a child born to unmarried parents. Neither founder member Mary Wilson nor more recent addition Cindy Birdsong (replacing Florence Ballard) sang a note on this single. The test run with Motown session group The Andantes as backup singers was issued as the single. Mary claims that this was a move by Berry Gordy to make clear to her and Cindy that they were expendable and further establish his power over them as well as playing up to his protégé/lover Diana Ross. Mary further says that the miming to the number for The Ed Sullivan Show was particularly difficult, knowing she didn't sing on it.

As far as I'm concerned anyone could be singing backup on the Supremes records because Diana's lead was always the focal of all their records! Her voice carried all their hits so Mary should have been use to her role of singing or not singing on records! I always heard she nor Cindy sang on Someday We'll Be Together! I've never objected to the name change of the group or to Diana's solo career! She was doing most of the work!

This song has a new meaning for me.. I had my DNA tested and found out that my female cousin had 3 "love children" in the 1960's. One in 1964- one in 1966 and the last in 1968. With married men. People need to be responsible with their behavior. Even though these three girls were raised by "families of privilege", they wonder why someone would discard them.. I provided them with family photos, newspaper articles and stories, but nothing will answer the question "why"… My cousin died in 2010 and the three girls only recently found out. I am the only family member who could have known who their mother was..

Diana’s first number one solo record. If you include “Someday we’ be together” which she also recorded without Mary and Cindy, she has 8 number ones solo and 10 number ones with the Supremes. If you include “We are the world”, it’s 9 solo number ones and 19 total. I remember seeing this when it first aired. We were floored to see our glamour girls dressed down. The critics applauded Diana’s singing performance on this song and they especially noted and praised her “Ad-libs” at the song’s end. This was one of their fastest selling records according to Gordy.

When the remix of “Someday we’ll be Together” from the “One Woman” collection hit the Billboard Dance Chart, Billboard listed it as follows: Someday we’ll be together by Diana Ross. It was great to have seen such an accurate description as well as seeing Diana receiving the credit she deserves.

She’s on The Hollywood Palace wearing that style as well and even the Dinah Shore special - all 1969. The hairdo matched the Love Child album cover so it made sense. My collection goes back to 1963 so I have seen her in just about every hair style possible!
