Diana Ross/Take me Higher a triumphant return to the dance floors a daring reprise, I will survive !

Музыка

After a 4 year hiatus , Diana Ross returned with a strong album , 4 brilliant producers and lineup of singles. Take me Higher was beautifully packaged with a stunning photoshoot taken in Alabama where Miss Ross displayed her impressive wardrobe . A big hit in Europe but very weak sales in the USA.

Take Me Higher and Everyday Is A New Day! we're pretty much structured the same way! But her "Thank You" album blew these out of the water in terms of song styles, I guess that's why it was nominated for a grammy, and it was her first album that see wrote the lyrics. Ms. Ross's next album I hope she does another Thank You, but with more dance songs.

Thank you! I loved this album immediately and consider it to be her second best recording (The Boss being number one!). I think it's a travesty that I Thought That We Were Still In Love was not grammy nominated. Exquisite! Are you familiar with two outtakes from the album---Too Many Nights and So Happy To See You Again? Definitely should have been included on the album!

It's worth noting that the Take Me Higher album is a true masterpiece, showcasing Diana Ross's incredible talent and versatility as a performer. The title track is a standout, with its infectious beat, soaring vocals, and inspiring lyrics. What's more, the Take Me Higher project is notable for its collaborations with marching bands and historic black colleges, which added a unique and unforgettable element to the album. It's easy to overlook some of Diana Ross's greatness because she has accomplished so much over such a long career, but it's important to recognize and celebrate her incredible achievements.

So sad it's over, would have loved to hear about Ross and Swept away. TMH is maybe the album with her very best voice and singing. I'm not so kind with the overall production or arrangement. Some fantastic tracks on various issues. Diana is a goodness, she sings like no one else, with a maximum of affectation leading to the most honest feelings. She is unique.

TMH is a great choice to round out your list. It's probably her best, most consistent album since diana. The photography is certainly her most thematic and conceptual perhaps ever. I can't think of another time when she incorporated an outside location into her photo shoots. This album really gets it right for the only time during her return to Motown era. Workin' Overtime, which I love personally, did not hew to Diana's sound closely enough to please many fans. Force Behind the Power had some good songs, but as an album it just sounded like early 90s Adult Contemporary. Everyday is a New Day has a similar sound to TMH, but without the same energy. So yes, this album is definitely Diana's most energetic, ambitious effort of the 90s. I love how youthful and optimistic she looked and sounded during this era. She actually looks younger than during performances of Force. Thanks for your analysis, Philippe.

Not my favorite DR album but do love the title track and I Will Survive. Gloria’s version will always be the original but it’ll always be stuck in the 70’s disco groove, whereas Diana’s is as fresh and relevant in 1995 as it is in 2024. It’s a lot more danceable and whenever I hear it, I think of Kevin Kline dancing his booty off in In & Out 🕺🏻 ☺️

I think that there was an thing that happened to female artists over the age 30 in the 80s whenever they would put out an album it would be modesty successful or poorly received in the USA and it would be a huge hit overseas, I think that was the case of Take me higher. My favorite song is Gone on the album

This was not the New Jack Swing era that was working overtime ...... Diana Ross is an international artist with a career spanning more than 60 years, and she has seen the music industry through many changes in the way music is consumed. It's unfair to say that the United States did not receive her music well based on original release showings. Unfortunately, there is a bias in pop culture that makes it difficult to acknowledge new work from artists over 60 years old. This kind of discrimination exists in other categories as well, and it's important to recognize and challenge it. Despite these challenges, the Diana Ross Take Me Higher project is considered one of her best solo albums to date, and the song Take Me Higher was a massive hit on the dance charts in the United States, even earning an honorable mention on the Diana Ross and The Supremes CD "number ones." This is a testament to Diana Ross's incredible talent and the timeless appeal of her music.

I agree overall with your assessment. Diana was 51 years old at the time the release of TMH came out in 1995, so the 60 age group does not apply. However, you make a good point regarding that statement of age. This, in my opinion, was her best output in the 90s and also one of her best works ever recorded. It is up there with the Diana and The Boss LPS. However, the USA does not know how to embrace good music overall anymore of any age. That all started to change in the late 1990s. Look at R&B in America today. It's been high-jacked and Appropriated, and it's barely in existence. Getting back to Ross, Diana was black balled in the USA after she left Motown to join RCA in 1981. The powers that control the industry were not pleased that she signed this lucrative contract as a Black woman and decided to take control of her career and make her own decisions, and to add insult, she was then really not promoted by RCA because she would not allow them to pick what kind of music they wanted her to record. After she did the Free Central Park Concert in NY, it really started to unravel for her because she then lost the support of her black fans who felt that she should have given that concert in Detroit which was her hometown. There were also some other political factors that were involved in why her music was suppressed on American radio. One big one was she demanded respect and major input in the direction of her music and how she would carry herself and present her music. Yes, I completely agree that she is Global Star and has been since the late 60s and still remains revelant today in certain parts of Europe, Japan, parts of South America, Africa, and Australia. With support like that, who needs the USA market, and stamp of approval. She's just not a singer. She's a legend, and she still remains Supreme!

@@gmoneyhollywood4116 It's true that the music industry underwent significant changes in the 1980s, and many artists, including Diana Ross, faced new challenges and obstacles as a result. While it's important to acknowledge the role that these changes played in the music industry, it's also important to recognize that not all artists who faced these challenges were blackballed. There are many factors that can influence an artist's success, and it's important to consider all of these factors when evaluating their career. Ultimately, what's most important is the music itself, and the impact that it has on people's lives.

@@gmoneyhollywood4116 It's important to clarify that the challenges faced by black artists in the music industry during the mid-1980s were not personal against Diana Ross. Rather, black artists who did not play the game in the music machine faced difficulties. In its heyday, Motown Records took care of its artists, and all of their new recordings were served to all stations, not just the black ones. However, big music companies went back to race music concepts, as they did before Berry Gordy came on the scene. Cover records existed, in which black songs by artists' photographs were not even put on the cover because they would not receive the same treatment. Gordy's Motown was instrumental in abolishing this practice, which is why the Motown sound of America was so well-received and popular by the mid-80s. By that time, black singers had to hit the top of the black charts before that music was even served to the pop radio stations and chart systems. This had nothing to do with blackballing; it had to do with politics. Michael Jackson's company had to threaten MTV to pull out all of their white artists if they continued to refuse to play Michael Jackson's Thriller. Without strategic moves, artists like Stephanie Mills, Gladys Knight, and Diana Ross did not have people behind them to ensure their success during the 80s. However, Diana Ross's catalog was so immense that she didn't need the United States politics like some of the other popular soul singers did.

You wrap up your series on Diana Ross with one her lesser known albums. Diana's career in the USA was stone cold in 1995, she just couldn't get a break. Take Me Higher was a really good dance track and lead single from the album. It was a big hit in the UK. I'm Gone was also released as a single which I thought a rather odd choice as to me it didn't have the punch to cut through on the radio. I was never a fan of New Jack Swing, I felt it lacked soul and I don't think that style of music from the mid 90s has aged particularly well. My big bug bear is I Will Survive. Gloria Gaynor OWNS that song and no one will ever come close to her incredible career defining moment- a bitt like the Righteous Brothers and You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling'. There was magic in the studio when these songs were recorded. I Will Survive was a UK Top 20 hit. The record does have an iconic video that features Diana in West Hollywood at a Pride style event featuring lots of Drag Queens dressed as Diana Ross and of course also features the living legend that is Ru Paul Charles. This was quite a daring video to make 30 years ago! Despite all the spectacle I just don't like Diana's vision and it's not a Diana Ross track that I ever play today. She insists in sining this song as her encore in concert at the expense of a number of much better hit songs. Altogether it's a good solid album but it's a long way from her golden days at Motown in the 70s. You did a fantastic job on your Diana Ross picks Philippe. I look forward to your choices if live albums. Some how I think Judy at Carnegie Hall will be in there somewhere!
