Now, you must watch Soul Train. It was a dance show where they would have musical guests on an elevated stage and the audience would dance around them. The show focused on Black performers. It started as a local program in Chicago, hosted by the creator, Don Cornelius, around 1968, then became nationally syndicated in 1970 with its move to Los Angeles. It ran for over 35 years. Just search for any musical act at that time and they probably appeared on the show. My favorite performance out of the numerous great ones was Al Green singing 'Here I Am' with his arm in a sling because he had broken his wrist the day before his appearance. The show must go on!

Which is very common - men naturally have a bit more vocal-range than women. So arrangements like these are usually made to suit the ladies range. So I don't really get it. And the didn't take it down a key. this is a fair bit higher than the original (which is in C) this arrangement is in D#/Eb which is a minor third higher (if u were implying something like she couldn't hit the high notes... it probably just sounded dull or less energetic in c) So

Interesting story behind the performance of that last song. David Ruffin didn't like the way Diana Ross sang certain notes of "HIS" song in the rehearsals (apparently she changed it because she couldn't hit certain notes) but Barry Gordy insisted that she sang it in the way that made her comfortable. So him coming down seemingly to assist her is really him trying to "show her how it's done" 😂 David was a character

Mary Wilson (Who is in the blonde wig) did many of the lead vocals in the 1974-1977 time period. However.. Mary did get a beautiful solo turn during THIS era on the Hollywood Palace in 1969. The Temptations are known as a group with four lead singers. Technically, all five have recorded leads. This is a recording of the "Classic V Temptations: David Ruffin (Lead Tenor) and Eddie Kendricks (First Tenor lead). The other three are Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin and Paul Williams. The Tempts are in every musical Halls of Fame, and are still singing and recording today (2023).

I know that those words are from the biopic. Leon ad-libbed the script and those apocryphal words have had the same impact as scripture in the canon of the Temptations' history. I stand by what I said: "Everybody is coming to see Otis now." Most folk have NEVER seen the original Temptations anyway, since David Ruffin was not an original Temptation (he joined four years after the group signed with Motown).

The venue of The Ed Sullivan Theater is the same theater on B'way(btw 53rd & 54th St.) in Manhattan that later became The "Late Show" with David Letterman and now "Stephen Colbert." I think the young fellow thought that the stage looked much bigger here cuz there was no desk that Ed Sullivan sat at with seats for his guests. Everyone from back-in-the-day, knew that Barry Gordy wanted Diana in the front because he felt that her voice was the most marketable for crossover at that time, rather than say, "Florence Ballard's" voice, who was deemed by many to have the most beautiful voice of the eventual trio. BTW, I must say, "I feel real OLD now that your son was talkin' about how unreal the set looked and couldn't believe that you lived through an era like this." -- Your dad is older than me kid! But you just made me feel like an "ancient artifact!!!" 🤨🙄

Yes this is great. Can’t compare these performances to current day late night. This show appeared in prime time- before 11pm on Sunday nights. Late night (Johnny Carson) were weeknights only, and their performers were on smaller stages much like Colbert and Kimmel, etc today. Ed Sullivan’s show was a variety show like your dad said, and these shows (like the Carol Burnett Show and Sonny and Cher) were designed to showcase the performances. Late night was mainly for the conversation.

I was born in 65, so Ed Sullivan was around but my family lived in London; by the time I was old enough to form memories, and back in the states, it was in its last years. I grew up, glued to the TV on certain nights, too! Wednesday night we were watching Sonny and Cher and The Tony Orlando and Dawn Rainbow Hour, after Sonny left their show. Then Donny and Marie and the Jackson's had a short season or two. Plus there was a slew of comedy-heavy shows that featured a musical act like Hee Haw for country music and the Carol Burnett Show would have coroners or the occasional pop star. The best, though, was Saturday afternoons: American Bandstand!

What Ed Sullivan was giving a short history lesson on the two groups. Paul Williams and Eddie Kendricks were in a trio called The Primes. Paul had an idea for a sister group and asked their manager at the time if he could put one together. So he first found Florence Ballard, who brought along Mary Wilson. Paul then found Diana Ross and brought her on along with his then girlfriend Betty McGlown. Eddie and Paul named them The Primettes. After no success, The Primes broke up and joined another group who was in search of a tenor snd and baritone, The Distants, which had Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin and Al Bryant. They renamed themselves The Elgins, but another group had that name, so a Motown employee suggested The Temptations. Meanwhile Florence, Mary and Diana signed to Motown and changed their name to The Supremes. The rest is history!

Barry Gordy did Florence Ballard who founded The Supremes wrong. One of the reasons he got rid of Ballard was because she gain weight and he could not control her. He made her work when she had pneumonia. He constantly told her she needed to lose weight. That she was fat. The only singer he cared about in the group was Diana Ross Barry was sleeping around with Diana Ross So of course he made her the lead singer Florence died penniless, she had to get on food stamps She died from a blood clot The movie Dream Girls is loosely based on The Supremes

And the didn't take it down a key. this is a fair bit higher than the original (which is in C) this arrangement is in D#/Eb which is a minor third higher (if u were implying something like she couldn't hit the high notes... it probably just sounded dull or less energetic in c) So
"I can't believe you were alive to witness stuff like this!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Check out Diana Ross Live/HBO Special. The mega stardom of her position n music AND performance is on full display...especially her entrance. Huge production with the full weight of Motown money behind it.

Holy Mackerel did your channel grow! Congratulations on you and your fathers success. You two deserve it.
Temptations will always stand the test of time.
Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams were “The Primes”. (Supremes were the sister group “The Primettes”.) Otis Williams and Melvin Franklin were “Otis Williams & The Distants”. They merged the two, and formed “The Elgins”, and later “The Temptations”.

Great Musack never goes out of style.
Keep in mind that in 1970, Diana Ross left, and the Supremes had 7 more top 40 hits without her between 1970 and 1977. Mary Wilson (Who is in the blonde wig) did many of the lead vocals in the 1974-1977 time period. However.. Mary did get a beautiful solo turn during THIS era on the Hollywood Palace in 1969. You can see that here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/X3mHq7mCddHVpdo.html
It’s funny that after all these years, even a young person can see when someone is a star.
I was born in 1963. I love R&B.
You guys are great. I've seen the supremes in person 9 times and Diana Ross 12 times. Just great. Thank you.

😂😂the fallout from this performance is the funniest thing I’ve heard apparently David Ruffin out sang her on purpose to humble and she ended up crying after and refused to work with David Ruffin again
Amazing that as of right now, Diana Ross, Cindy Birdsong & Otis Williams are the only one's left with us.. Rest in Heaven all of them,, Rock n' Roll Royalty.. Lady SUPREME Mary Wilson kept The Supremes together & rolling out the Hits til 1977. 24 Million Selling Gold Record Hits between 1964 to 1973, starting with Where Did Our Love Go to Floy Joy.. Lady Mary gave The BEST Concerts & spread & exhumed So Much Love where ever she performed or appeared & always left the audiences with big smiles & satisfaction on their faces.. Gotta say I really enjoy when Kai gets introduced to some classic performances/songs. There are so many gems hidden now due to time and it’s great to discover them all over again
Love me some Temptations!!!
It was rumored that Berry Gordy was furious with David from this performance. Apparently David was upset that Diana was getting all this attention and grew frustrated that she was butchering his song. That’s why you see him begin to take over the song because she was struggling to hit the notes.
Otis Williams is the founder and sole surviving original member of the Temptations he control's and owns the group
I love this song and both groups
Yes please kinda grew up listening to this , was waiting for some classics , please do some Luther Vandross his love performance A house is not a home.
Since the stage was mentioned as was Stephen Colbert at one point, I have to point out that the Late Show with Stephen Colbert is filmed in the Ed Sullivan Theater.
This one is another wonderful reaction
Whew! YES! I hope you do more old school live performances.
Ohh yaaay!!! you guys are Canadian I feel even more proud of you guys

I love how y’all switch spots this time. And dad is now educating you and tellin us what he knows. Love these classic legends as well.
NF- Only. Such an underrated and under appreciated song
Oh my gosh this brings back memories. Sunday night sitting around the tv set family time
I absolutely love me some The Supremes & The Temptations too, my god David Ruffin was absolutely sensational.
I love the temptations movie! This is a great song collaboration!
Ed said in the beginning of the video that Paul Williams & Eddie Kendricks had a group with Diana Ross and her gang called 'The Primes & The Primettes' they were one group before separating and forming the two groups in the video.

Yeeeesssss!!!! We have this on tape. It was put in an HBO special "Temps vs Tops." That's a good one to watch btw, but I love the Temptations!
Check out a “Boys 2 Men” & “New Edition”. This is a more modern reference to performers wearing the same clothing, although this is an era where influences of hip-hop come into the R&B music, specifically members of New Edition forming a sub group BellBivDevoe.
Thank you! I've never seen this before. Amazing!!

Great choice! So the temptations used to be Otis Williams and the Distance. I then they came up with Temptations. The Surpremes were originally the Prime and the Primettes. Eddie and Paul left and joined the Temptations before they were the Temps and so they were The Primettes, then Supremes and Diana Ross and the Supremes. ☺️ I think I got the order right lol

The 60's were the greatest period for music and Motown was my favourite. The Supremes were my favourite group then and in my opinion are still the greatest girl group ever. And Diana Ross is still touring and selling out venues at almost 80 years old.
First…I’m excited for this one.
Steven Wonder had one of the labels of, Motown. Look it up.
The Temptations did sing I heard it through the grapevine as well.
I thought I was the only one who saw a similarity between Diana Ross and Erykah Badu vocally. I also feel like Chante Moore reminds me a lot of Diana Ross and Diana reminds me of Eartha Kitt vocally. I feel like she has a lot of her mannerisms.
The Supremes at that time: Lead singer and last surviving founding member Diana Ross (Soprano) (Still performing as a solo artist) Founding member Mary Wilson (Alto) (R.I.P.) Cindy Birdsong (Retired) (Soprano) (Replaced founding member Florence Ballard) ----------- The Temptations: David Ruffin (R.I.P.) (Falsetto/Tenor/Baritone) (Replaced founding member Elbridge Bryant) Founding member Eddie Kendricks (First Tenor/Falsetto) (R.I.P.) Last surviving founding member Otis Williams (Second Tenor/Baritone) (Still performing) Founding member Paul Williams (Second Tenor/Baritone) (R.I.P.) Founding member Melvin Franklin (Bass) (R.I.P.)
The supremes and a few temptation membrs were once the primes and the primettes but both went on to be the supremes and the temptations
Wow, Dad knows his Motown history. As a native Detroiter I am impressed. Though I believe what was missing from the discussion was just how big Ross was in her day. The only comparison I can draw would be to Beyoncé today. She was that big!
