Diamond Fretsaw, belt replacement.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The diamond fretsaw ceased production in 2008 after the passing of it's maker Doug Woodward. It is a very good machine however parts are not readily available especially the drive belts.
In this video I tell you what sort of belt to look out for and other ways of getting the saw working again.
Added Nov 2023.
Since I made the video A user called Mock on Ukworkshop has kindly advised that the following belts will fit the Diamond machine they are 5405-0005-0494 or 5405-0005-0533 (Obtainable from Amazon or Ebay) Thank you Mock.
For more details of the Diamond saw please have a look at my other videos in my channel.

"If you want to get the saw working, then you are going to have to put the work in". I like this line a lot

Lol did I really say that? When I make my videos I just set the camera running and 'rabbet' on, I don't rehearse, my mouth just says what my brain is thinking at the time. My wife always says I talk too much!

Tim Hunkin has a video all about belts and chain drives. I think he comments on a belt-making material and how to use. Might be something worth looking at. Thanks John, I don't have one of these saws but I enjoyed watching all the same!

Hi Mark, I am a great fan of the secret life series and Tim Hunkin, watched him when he was on originally and recorded all of his programmes and as you can imagine they are 'right up my street'! I did not know about his belt video but I have just watched it, (thanks for letting me know about it) so my mention in the video about joining belts was not fantasy. I have actually god the exact same Weller soldering gun he use and it also came with that spade bit. Thanks for the comment Mark.

You are very kind Moondog, I suppose a weather vane is like a whirligig that just turns with the wind. I did make a sort of one by cutting out the letters N,S,E and W and sticking them on arms on a Whirligig pole but it was years ago before KZread existed and before I had a camcorder.

That's good to hear Bill, do you have a link? There are three belts on a Hotpoint twin tub, the one you want for the Diamond saw is the Elasticated white spot spinner belt.

@@scrimperuk I merely Googled ‘hotpoint twintub washing machine belt’ and got several hits. However, not sure if they are right. The weld-it-together-yourself stuff in very cheap and I am going to try that.

I have never tried those weld together belts, I would be most interested in the results if you try them.

@@scrimperuk I belong to a woodworking club and someone has donated a Diamond fretsaw (not sure what the difference is between fret and scroll saws). It works but the belts are terribly perished and stretched. It even has a manual. One of our members says he has the weldable material (6mm) which we are going to try next week.

Bill there is really no difference between a Fretsaw and a scroll saw, In the UK they were always called fretsaws and the hobby was called Fretworking this goes back over 100years. In the US they always called then Scrollsaws. In 1974 when Hegner (Germany) introduced their first saws they called them Fretsaws. Hegner were largly responsible for the interest in motorised fretsaws today. You many be interested in my video on the history of Fretworking in the UK kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z556s8iqoMmZe6g.html
