Diamond DA62 IFR - Sydney to Byron Bay
Flying my Diamond DA62 from Sydney (Bankstown) to Ballina / Byron Gateway (YBNA) for lunch and a catchup with another DA62 owner. Explaining my weather radar setup, use of GSR56 Iridium data link satellite weather, accessing METARs via datalink. Discussing my new business - Diamond Air Taxis. General Aviation Australia.

Though at 140kg, smaller aircraft are out of the question for me, I like the air taxi idea, especially for regional towns not, or no longer, serviced by commercial operators, such as YBTH for example. Even though being a pilot is long dead dream of mine, I do love the DA62 in MSFS and can just imagine how good the real aircraft is.

This video was really inspiring. The best businesses always solve a problem and your idea is no exception. I haven't ever had to charter an aircraft but I've booked many lessons as well as private aircraft hires and the process has almost always been a little challenging. Some small charter/training companies do it well with booking portals but more often than not they're often archaic. Something pretty, modernised and simple will do really well in my opinion, and such a software package/solution could even be sold to other companies (subscription service perhaps?)...although this sounds like a competitive advantage for your company over others so perhaps not. Side note, my goal's always been to attain my CPL, purchase an aircraft and work for myself. Definitely won't be able to afford a Diamond straight off the bat though 😂 Whenever I get there I'll get in touch to see if you need a plane and pilot for work in QLD/NSW as I'll likely be based in BNE. Great video as always, awesome to see Aussie aviation isn't going anywhere even after the pandemic. Cheers Zac

I've literally had a dream about my own 62. Not counting the number of daydreams bordering on the obsessive. Just one measly Powerball win, that's all I ask! What configuration is your 62? 4/5/7 seats? How long did it take from order to delivery (I've been told 3 years!) Won't bother asking what it cost - I have the pricing lists. 😭 I've never even seen one in Vic. Seems they're all in NSW. Fair number of 42 in the schools, never mind the singles. EDIT: just noticed that you're hauling at 94%! No concerns about lower TBOH?

Haha. Yes they are an amazing machine. Mine is 7 seats with pretty much all the options. Was around 2 years from order to delivery for me. There will be one based in YMMB from around September I believe. I often run at around 88-92%. Max continuous is 95%. I’m impatient!

Why do you tap brakes on rotation? thanks for the video
@diamondairtaxis
3 ай бұрын
Couple of reasons. 1) to stop the wheel rotation as if there are any rocks or lose bits of rubber they could fly off in the wheel well and rupture a pipe/hose/wire etc. 2) the rotating inertia creates additional (sideways) forces on the landing gear when it tries to retract (think gyro)
Hey mate, any chance you can give me a quick run down of how you record your audio? Thanks!
@diamondairtaxis
3 ай бұрын
Sure. I record all audio (with video) on the insta360 x3 camera. I use an insta360 x3 external mic adapter. Then I plug the Nflightcam Digital Audio Recording Cable into the pilots headphone jack (at one end) and the x3 mic adapter (at the other end). That’s it. Easy!

It a decent idea but I think the most obvious problem is what has always held back private aviation in Aus. Lack of demand/small population. Almost every flight will have an empty return leg which combined with long distances in Aus make it hard for the numbers to get low enough to achieve a decent level of demand. Capex of the DA62 will kill any opex advantages vs older options. Only hope as you alluded to is leasing underutilised AC from owners but without the population and tax advantages that the US has, there’s just not a lot of people who want to spend $2m on a piston twin. have a similar model in the US using SF50s and are still struggling to make it work despite without all the headwinds and equivalent model in Aus would have. Hope it succeeds but as far as entrepreneurship goes this is playing the game on hard mode for sure.
@diamondairtaxis
3 ай бұрын
I love this type of feedback! Ok so i agree with you mostly but here are some thoughts. 1. I see charter jet services always busy (and they also have the empty leg issue) so there is demand and money being made, 2. The DA62 burns jet a1 and uses about half the fuel of a comparable aircraft (eg g58 baron), so there are big savings in fuel / opex , 3) we will charge for the return trip regardless to cover the likely empty leg. 4). We will sell the empty legs as deals. 5) we won’t be that much more expensive than regional airlines (which are quite expensive)… but yes it’s definitely playing the game on hard mode!! (love that analogy btw)
