Night Flight in a Diamond DA42 VI from Spokane (GEG) to Renton (RNT) with a Night Landing at Renton

Important - This video is for entertainment only. It is not intended for instruction and should not be used for any training purpose.
After flying three Angel Flight West passengers from Seattle to Spokane International, I recorded this flight back to Renton (RNT) near Seattle, WA. I was on an IFR flight plan. As usual, it was a busy approach into Renton but all went well. I hope this video gives you a feel for a typical IFR cross country in the Pacific Northwest.

    I lived in the Seattle area for about 5 years. Back in Australia now living in Melbourne, have gotten my PPL, working towards my IFR. I definitely want to fly around the area as a pilot.

    Great video! Subscribed 👍. I used live near SLC, but back in Adelaide now. I need about 23 more hrs for my 100cmd, then I'll start my CPL training. Was considering doing it in the US, but will probably just do it here, unless circumstances change, then I can come over and get an FAA PPL based on my CASA license.

    Cool vid , I was un aware of the DA 42 , I just saw one today in Renton , I work at the Boeing fuel farm as a fueler , I was chatting with the PC -12 guys next door to our south and a DA 42 , ( maybe you ) taxied by us around... 16:00 or so, the chief pilot mentioned it had diesel engines. So, I thought , hmm, I will youtube a DA 42 and found this video. What a small world.... happy days 🙂

    That could have been me. I landed at Renton at about 17:00! Ironically I was down in the Portland area at an informal meet-up of PNW Diamond pilots. There were a few DA42s there.

    Does SEA-TAC give you instructions on where to taxi - park, as I take it RNT Tower is closed?

  • @twmba65

    @twmba65

    11 ай бұрын

    Good question. When the tower is closed you self-report your intentions on the Renton common traffic advisory frequency (CTAF) which is the same as the tower frequency (124.7) when the tower is open.

    Hi Trevor could you land where you want if it went down to one engine? Really thinking of buying one.

  • @twmba65

    @twmba65

    FishCamp, I always calculate single engine ceiling when I am on a cross country and it is virtually always above the terrain ... even with the mountains out west where I fly. Also you may know that during your multi engine training you spend most of your time flying with one engine failed. You practice a lot of single engine landings, approaches etc. Its super important to stay proficient on the single engine maneuvers but the plane performs really well. So I am confident I could get to a comfortable landing spot in the event of an engine failure.

  • @twmba65

    Yes that is an option. Its really just a personal preference. I've always preferred holding the checklist in my hand but some like having the checklist on the MFD so they don't need a separate document to keep track of.

    Thanks racer. I appreciate the comments on the audio. I do like to mix in some of the ambient cockpit/engine noise so it gives more of a real-world feel. If I just used the audio from the headset, it would be completely silent when I am not talking or atc is off the air. Was their something specific you were picking up on?

    25:25 Nice touch with the engine sound though. Must have just been an audio sync thing right at the end I guess. (I only caught the landing before - I was working through the first bit)

    @@z400racer37 Ha yes I see! Because there is some voice picked up by the Gopro mics recording the cockpit/engine noise, if they are not perfectly synched with the headset audio, there is an annoying voice echo. I thought I'd fixed all of those. Good catch.

    Hi. I have question, why You T/O with flaps UP? Whats the reason?

  • @twmba65

    @twmba65

    Жыл бұрын

    Flaps up take off is standard in the DA42 VI per the POH. You can take off with APR flaps for a short field procedure but its not required.

    Wayyyyy too much white light in your cockpit. Your eyes aren't adjusted for the dark. Any pilot can tell that. Making a video is obviously more important to you than flying safely.

    The cabin light does not seem anywhere near as bright as the PFD and MFD displays. At any rate, he's flying IFR to a lighted runway and other planes will have anticollision lights on. He has a moving terrain map for obstacle clearance. What exactly is he going to miss by not having night-adapted vision?

    Why can't you say thank you? Jesus are manners really this difficult? It's crazy to me, the seattle approach said thank you to you twice, and have a good night, and you said nothing back even though it was him helping you.
