Diamond 13 Patch Origins

What Does The Diamond 13 Mean? The "13" on the patch stood for the Top 13 "Outlaw" motorcycle clubs in Southern California, the Top 13 outlaw racing clubs were awarded the patch and a trophy. The diamond patch shape was used because it already stood for the anti-AMA movement and it was AMA who used the term 99% of bikers are law abiding.

The honest truth is the 13 can mean what every your club sees fit to make it your own. Every patch on your vest means something, and it’s no bodies business but between brothers. So my 13 means something what it means to me and mine. But the next club it means something else. That’s the truth. I love how you explained this… good work homie. Your channel is so fucking real.

From my understanding ( could be wrong) however, the 1st wearing of the numbers 13 were by the 13 Rebels in 1937, they were the top 13 AMA racers in SoCal and formed that MC, Shortly after is when the AMA came out with the whole 99% / 1% thing, the first 13 1% clubs then started wearing the 13 square patch. i have also heard it relates to each club differently.

There were 13 clubs given the diamond. The top 13 outlaw clubs living outside the AMA. POBOB, Galloping Goose, Tophatters, Moonshine, Boozefighters, etc. After the Hollister riot, the 1% came out of the media. It was then switched later to the 1%. These clubs still rate this patch.

I'm a former SAA for my old MC and originally when I was a Prospect, I was taught it was a support patch for our Dominant club in the territory which our club earned from our sponsor due to how much the founding members supported him and was always there for him, requested or not. After I got my officer position I learned the actual history of the patch, which is kind of sad that majority of bikers, even clubs don't know the origin. Just goes to show that there is a lot of information that has become twisted over the years in regards to origins.

Another great one man! Fantastic. I always saw it as a badge of recognition, a combat patch that only those who know, know of..if you will. If I ride by or am at a meet and see a 13, I feel relatively secure in the knowledge that they know their stuff, they know the life. Another reason why I don’t like the fully patched pretend cuts. I wear a plain leather cut, no patches, one support pin and my old EGA that’s it. ‘13’ was also popular with the cafe racers and early rockers as well but was mostly painted onto a jacket rather than a patch. Unlucky for some, lucky for others. 13’s legendary. Hope your doing well out there man, ride swift & steady.

This has always been a topic. When I grew up you never had anything with 13 on it. It wasn’t until I was 5 years in then navy when I learned about the 13 tattoo tradition where getting it inked would bring you good luck. That kinda where the Friday the 13th tattoo events rooted from besides the old story of wanting a cheap tattoo. The way you said it and the way the clubs use it makes sense to me too.

Haha the guy who taught me about the number 13 with motorcycles over 20+ years ago said it was just a way to confuse people or shock people. He was too old to be a hippie yet too young to be a beatnik a great man he was. He said 13 can mean M for motorcycle and was a old way of saying you like bikes or that you are independent. He also said the group of friends he rode with did the kissing and it was just their way of shocking the squares saying we want to do our thing, not be hassled, not cause problems, and have fun riding. He said 13 meant whatever you want it to mean. Kinda like FTW that means Forever Two Wheels. He taught me many years ago no diamonds or ink unless you take the step and are willing to put in the work to earn them with a club. Honestly most of what you talk about in your videos is just good old fashioned common sense, etiquette, and respect for other people explained in your own words and I dig that. Thank you.

I was told about the square 13 and diamond 1% patches when I was 15 by a Hell Angel president that was a friend of my dad’s. He told me the square 13 was the original 1% patch which he wore on his right arm and below it was the diamond 1% patch. He would not go into detail other than he didn’t want to take off the square because he had to put in work for it. And he got the diamond 1% when he moved chapters and said he had to re-earn the diamond. I can’t verify how much of it was true and at what level he was at as president, could have been local to the area but rumor was all of Louisiana.

#GHOSTIN #CALIFORNIA #JUSTAVETERANWITHABIKE The Diamond 13 patch is well known to Trials, Scramblers, Hillclimbers, Enduro riders, and Speedway and Flat Track racers in Southern California. Initially it signified the top 13 of the Outlaw Racers Association sanctioning clubs. The outlaw (racing) clubs formed to break the stranglehold the AMA had on racing, and also promoted safety (no board tracks). Later it was used as a symbol for privateer racing teams (teams without major sponsorship or backing). competing on the pro circuit. I wore one racing enduros and scrambles, and that's where I learned about the meaning. When I see the patch on a 1% club cut (at least here in SoCal) you can be reasonably sure he's a racer, or was, and is keeping alive the memory of those original outlaws.

Ok so growin up in northern California, i started AMA racing motorcycles in the 80s as a kid. I remember asking the older racers what the diamond 13 patch was on some of the guys leathers meant, as most of them were out of town racers or guys i heard of from other states. They told me it was a patch for racers that don't follow the rules. Almost like a bad boy patch. And all the HA guys that went to the races to watch wore the same patch. I remember all the "fast kids" rocked a diamond 13 sticker on the front plate! 😂

New to the scene, started to hang around and learn and see what I can offer to MC and what MC can offer me. All US Marines so there's that initial bond, plus I dont feel as stupid asking questions, because I feel not asking the questions IS being stupid, and just like active duty being the FNG you need to ask questions when need be other than that keep eyes and ears open and your mouth shut. As for you brother thanks for doing this channel. In this new age of international interconnectedness and the world's information at our fingertips there's alot of BS floating about and lots of people who don't know shit. Hard to sift through the shit sometimes but you're legit cracking eggs of knowledge on us independents and hang arounds. So thanks again. I dont know if ill ever patch in but I have a better understanding of what im getting into, how to be respectful to fellow bikers, and how to not step on anyone's dick and get in trouble. Last thing I want or need is trouble, first thing I want is a safe healthy family, and some brothers to bond with.

But along with that is we’re all human, and we definitely have respect for the other teams involved. So long as the civilian populace isn’t being hurt, there’s no reason why we can’t shoot the shit, be human with each other, or cut each other breaks.
